Mrs Warren's Professional daughter
The play Mrs Warren's Profession was one of Shaws plays unpleasent and he wrote it at a time when many people shyed away from the mojority of political and social issues of the time. Shaw had an ability however to lay down the facts of many things that were happening in society and he often gave the reader or audience a sense of responsibilty that many of the people involved were receiving. In Mrs Warren's Profession he focusses on the hidden world of prostitution without ever mentioning the word or even spelling it out to the reader/audience. With this he is able to descibe the effects it has without crudly embarking on a course of discrimination. All in all it is a powerful piece which shows how women had had influence over the world in all aspects.

Mrs.Warrens Profession: women in society
The play Mrs. Warren's Profession was good, the main charcter was not Mrs. Warren but her daughter Vivie who goes back in and forth in every act between love and hate for her mother who has been a prostitue and ran some brothels. Vivie is convienced her mother could have made a better choice for herself than prostitution. Mrs. Warren has kept Vivie out of the brothels all of her life and gave her the best in education and up bring. But even though she has done all of that Vivie is not content on being there any longer with her mother. End the end Vivie leaves her mother and Mrs. Warren holds her self together unappoligic for anything she has done. This play was a great example of how women had two choices at the time the play was set in marriage or prostitution which were both forms of slavery. Shaw knew how hard it was for women in society and wanted more for them, than just mother hood and marriage.

Mrs. Warren's Profession
Shaw does a wonderful job at showing her "job" without having to tell you. It gives it more of an off limits feel for the job and also makes the listener feel like they are there. Powerful and compelling.

the way it ran in the '20's?
The train stopped running in 1914 and didn't run again until the 30's... what is with this?

This is a fascinating book, even if you're not a train buff.
This a beautiful and lavishly illustrated book on the world's most beautiful train, written by the wife of its owner. The Orient Express has been revived and this book documents its repair and all the work that went into the restoration as well as the current operation. The book is wonderful, even if you are not a train buff. I recommend it to anyone who has read _Murder on the Orient Express_ for the train has been restored to the way it was in the 20s, or to anyone with an interest in the golden age of rail travel.

BEST BOOK
This is a great book about the Venice Simplon Orient Express and it is written by the founders wife. I recommend this book to anyone.

An incomplete oral history
"Voices & Images of the Great War" was great idea. The formula of presenting first-hand accounts of the experience of war has worked well for such authors as Cornelius Ryan (Longest Day, and A Bridge Too Far). But acclaimed World War I authority Lyn MacDonald proved to me that she should stick to her day job of writing straight history.

First of all it should be noted that despite the ambitious (or ambiguous) title, the scope is rather limited for this work. Except for two Germans and one American liaison officer, one finds here only the words of soldiers from the British Empire - and only on the western front. I have no problem with that per se, but there are alot of voices - French, German, American, civilian - and images left out. Actually, a narrow focus is preferred. Oral histories are nearly impossible to produce on a large scale and are much more effective when they focus on specific battles or campaigns such as D-Day or Iwo Jima. I think to write a book like this also requires more journalistic training than Ms. MacDonald appears to have.

As written, the book moves chronologically through the war and each event is retold sometimes through personal narratives, sometimes through letters. In true military fashion, we are given name, rank and unit of each man, but beyond that we are not introduced. After reading each entry, one often wonders what happened to these letter-writers, whether they survived the war or what they made of their lives after. One isn't rewarded. The images mentioned in the title are present, but there are not very many and they are unlabeled. The result is confusing because you aren't sure whether the photo is the actual image of the writer or merely representative. On infrequent occasions the photos are tilted to one side or the other, lending an air of the scrapbook.

Despite all of this book's shortcomings, the stories are there and they speak with undeniable clarity. If you purchase this book do it for these great men.

MacDonald's "Voices and Images" Speaks Volumes
This one book is what led me to become a Lyn MacDonald fan who has eagerly collected and read each one of her books as they became available. She is one of the foremost experts on the WWI and as such, has brought to life in this one volume, the stories of the men who risked all in this long ago conflict.

This book is dedicated to the individual soldier and the collective experience. As such, it is not straight history and is all the more compelling for it. If you are looking for something more detailed, this is not the book for you.

What this book does offer is glimpses into the lives and deaths of the soldiers who participated. From heroes who won the Victoria Cross to deserters who were shot at dawn, each tale, snapshot or drawing provides a vivid introduction to the personal aspect of war.

INS Test Prep
I bought this book because I needed to study for the Immigration Inspector exam. Unfortunately, there isn't a book available for this exam, but this book was at least helpful. I took the test yesterday, and I was so glad that I had studied. There were 200 people taking the test, and at least I felt that I had a slight edge from studying. I wish there would have been more test exams in the book - there's only two. The Immigration Inspector test doesn't include any Spanish or Artificial Language sections, but I did use the Spanish section to brush up on my skills. It takes up to twelve weeks to get your results back, which the book doesn't mention. Good luck to all and study, study, study!!

Buy the blue one!
Until the third edition comes out (and that could be a while since this one is fairly new), this edition is the most up to date one available! The first edition still contains the old vocabulary portion which has been eliminated from the current Border Patrol test. If you wish to study the vocabulary section, I would recommend buying both books, but this is simply NOT necessary. This book gives you study tips, very realistic practice tests, and it helps you to find your weaker areas. Buy the blue one!

Cellars

Shirley's always good, but definitely not his best
I did enjoy this book, I would recommend it to be read, but in comparison with Shirley's other books, it's a bit lacking. It has the same wonderful characterization Shirley always shows, the right combination of drugs, sex, tense moments, and action that he always delivers, but I felt that the second half of the story was a bit rushed, the ending especially. If you just want a good, short read, then by all means, pick this book up, but if you're looking for one of Shirley's better works, I would recommend the Eclipse Trilogy or Demons.

Cellars actually scared me!
I've read this book twice (with about 8 years between each reading), and it still scares me. John Shirley has a knack for taking something I do without thinking about it, such as closing my eyes, and makes me SCARED of doing it. In Cellars, he's got New York City subways, and sub-subways, and psychics, and street urchins, and horrible "blessed" people, and secret societies, and things coming up from drains, and each horrific event is more disturbing than the last--all the way to the last page. Shirley doesn't write many horror novels, but when he does... Well, you have to read one for yourself. The only other book that actually scared me--and I read a LOT of horror stories--was another John Shirley book, In Darkness Waiting.

7days - more like 7 weeks!
Both my husband and I found this course very hard to follow. The written text does not follow the tape and you find yourself skipping from page to page and getting frustrated.

We did learn enough Greek to get by on our trip, but I would not purchase this again. I would go with another tape/book combo.

Doesn't bite off too much
Not as complete as the Teach Yourself Greek or the Colloquial Greek offerings, but still a solid instructional conversational course. Make sure you get the book/cassette combo, not just the book. Designed to deliver conversational skills. Language books fall into two broad groups: those that teach you phrases and go light on the grammar, and those that endeavor for a working knowledge of the entire language. This book falls into the former category, where it does a good job, but while you may gain some useful knowledge in 7 days, you will not be able to master all the material in the book in that time.

Good guide to the basics!
As I am just picking up the Japanese language, I picked up what I figured would be a good beginner's guide, which is exactly what this is! I can say there is no way in heck that your going to learn everything this book has to offer in seven days (unless you're obsessive), but it offers a ton of beginning phrases, how to read basic road-signs (along with which bathroom your supposed to be in, which is helpful). It offers a lot of basic "hi, how are you? Excuse me. Where is ....?" phrases, and is filled with quite a few pictures to help illustrate what is being said.

It's a great book for beginners, and I am fairly pleased with it!

A good begining
Conversational Japanese in 7 days is a great book for a beginner, or someone brushing up on japanese. It has great pictures of japanese city-life, breathtaking photos of the natural scenary and a little on martial arts. However- it is not very complete and its dictionary is small! But, if your looking to just get-by in Japan, and not trying to "become a native" this book is for you!

A Cowboy, a Bride and a Wedding Vow
I found this book to be, touching. It is about a lonely man who gave up his future to raise his siblings. And about a past college love who comes back into his life, and has something he never thought he would ever have. It is about a woman who has learned to servive on her own, with out any help from her family, and now has to face up to the choices she made regarding her past.

Great Cowboy Romance
I love romances with ranchers and this one is one of the best so far. This book's plot is so different, that's what I liked about it. The end is surprising and fantastic. Make sure you have a few hours to spend because once you start reading you won't be able to put it down. The story begins with a grubby little boy showing up on a ranch to meet his dad. That's all I'm telling. This is a great book.
