An atypical horror/dark comedy book by sc-fi author John Shirley. A good read but not Shirley's best by far.

The Dynamics of Medieval Iceland: Political Economy & Literature

Very good
I highly recommend this book for someone who wishes to have a greater understanding of social history and economy in medieval Iceland. Written by an anthropologist it uses a good combination of historical record, written literature (sagas) and anthropological technique to describe the economic conditions of Iceland during this period.

It is a very short book but is nice to have for the collection:

Chapters include: Production Chiefly Consumption Politics Exchange Kinship, Church, and King Ideology

In the conclusion it has a nice justification for the use of the saga as source for social information.

A family affair by Shirley Hailstock
I thought that this was a great book. I really enjoyed the way that Brenda tryed to keep her relationship with Wes at a respectful level. But, then she started realizing that she was falling in love with him and that was when the story started to get very hot and interesting. I have read each one of the Family Reunion books. The authors should get together and write a sequel together about the characters and there new found love and lives as married people. Basically telling the readers what they are doing since they have found there true love and happiness.

An Original Little Young Adult Thriller
This book's a quick read, but well worth it. It has one of the most original storylines I've ever seen in a young adult book, or a adult book for that matter. The villian is very unqiue, and the ghost subplot is handled well. Howe's writing is much better than some of the hack stuff you see in horror books.

Field Guide to Plants Poisonous to Livestock: Westerm U.S.

Poisonous or not?
This book put my mind at ease when it helped me identify some very poisonous plants in my pastures. Photos would be more helpful than the illustrations but the detailed information on signs of poisoning and treatments is comforting to have close at hand.

I've found the Fielding travel guides to be the best.
Fielding's tends to be a bit more critical than Fodor or Frommer, to review in more depth. I prefer them to other guides. While the descriptions are brief, the star ratings do give a better perspective on how to spend time and dollars. I'll be using this one to plan my vacation

Good coverage, but lack of solutions weakens it.
Logic is one of the foundations of mathematics, making quality textbooks essential. This is one of the better ones, with descriptions followed by a large number of exercises. The basic strategy is to present the material in small sections, most of which are two pages or less in length. One unusual aspect of the book is that the authors chose to wait until chapter four to present truth tables. Traditionally the first topic in logic textbooks, leaving truth tables until later forces the reader to learn the operational meanings of the connectives. I approve of this pedagogical technique, undue reliance on truth tables can lead to the masking of some of the concepts of logic. Propositions and predicates are covered, with more ink spent on propositions that predicates and a simple set of axioms for addition is also presented
One negative point is that no solutions to the exercises are included. In my opinion, any book without solutions to some of the exercises is of reduced value as a textbook. Students work problems on their own and it is very important for them to get immediate feedback. This also reduces its' value as a text for self study.
I can recommend this book, the quality of the explanations and the number and detail of the exercises make that easy. However, the lack of solutions means that it can only receive my second highest recommendation.

Decent furry tale
Ever since spending the winter in an airplane hangar, Rory the kangaroo rat has longed to fly. His seemed an impossible dream - until he finds the old model plane. But before he could hide it and then begin to work on it, Charlie Gribble came along - a boy as interested in the plane as Rory was. Together, Rory, Charlie, and Crispin the lemming made a good team. And the model plane soon became a real plane. But one problem remained - a huge flock of starlings. With all the starlings, the plane couldn't take off. But what could one lemming, one boy and one rat do about it? Although the characters are a bit shallow, the story was very well written, like all of Murphy's novels. If you love planes and human-animal communicaton furry tales, give this a try.
