Educator alert!
Anthropologists will quibble with Griggs and Dunn about whether a particular learning style is the result of culture or a cause of it. The debate would really be about the validity of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and, as such, belongs in another academic arena. Griggs and Dunn have written a good guide for the classroom teacher who wants to understand her/his multicultural students better. The book is a significant contribution to the field because multicultural children are often labeled as having learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and related learning problems when the difficulty is really cultural and is related to (a) the worldview of the culture based on economic and social factors related to being a member of a minority culture, and (b) how education is valued and whether it is relevant to a child's family and home environment. For these reasons, educators can benefit greatly by reading Multiculturalism and Learning Style.

Extremely Informative, Fact-based Account
This book gave history that I always wondered about, but never understood. She tries to cover origins of actions in this text, confusing or not. She is fairly good about making her subjective views fairly obvious, so that if you don't agree with her, you can disagree without sacrificing too many of the facts.

A primer in spirituality
This book is a must read for anyone who is looking for more meaning in life. It depicts the author's efforts to become more aware of her spiritual being. She shares the great amount of knowledge she has gained from the many books she has read and the many friends in her life. The portions detailing her affair are important, but are a frustrating detour from the main subject. All in all, it is a wonderful place to start your own spiritual journey.

A must read for any Texas enthusiast!
Parks for Texas is a fascinating account of the creation of the Texas state park system. Steely deftly weaves political, architectural, environmental, and social history into a rich and compelling text. His examination of the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Texas during the depression is meticulous, and is brilliantly placed within the anxious social climate of rural Texas. If you are interested in parks, architecture, political history or just want to know more about how we have changed our view of landscape in the 20th century, this book is a must read. Certainly, if you relish things Texana, this is an absolute necessity for your library. Steely has produced an educated, insightful work, that will no doubt become a classic text on the revoultionary works of FDR's New Deal. Enjoy.

Oldie but Goodie
This book on writing by Shirley Haley-James,provides the reader with the knowledge that children need a variety of writing experiences, such as writing about prior experiences or things they like. This variety is necessary in order to become successful writers, or even to begin writing. It specifies the teachers' role in providing these experiences while motivating and supporting children's writing.
It provides several methods like "Whole Language Approach" and "Functional Writing Programs," which help teachers facilitate the teaching/learning writing process.
It is a good resource for viewing samples of previous writing experiences and reflective comments from instructors.

one little boy loves this book!
My son is 22 months old now, and we've read this book over and over again. There are images of a little girl and her baby sibling. She is hiding, throwing, sliding, running, and doing other fun things that will appeal to most toddlers.

The text, with lines like "see how I can throw!" and "or do balancing tricks, with one foot in the air!" doesn't follow a predictable, repeating pattern. Nevertheless, when I said one line of the text to my son (with the book nowhere in sight), he ran into his room and retrieved this book!

This is a memorable book that has made an impression on my son. I bet other children of his age will like it as well.

Practical Approaches to Using Learning Styles in Higher Education
Published in Hardcover by Bergin & Garvey (30 April, 2000)
Authors: Rita Dunn and Shirley A. Griggs
Amazon base price: $72.95

Success stories in higher education
The Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles Model and all the corresponding educational and teaching strategies have proved beyond doubt their greater effectiveness with all kinds of students, including those at the tertiary level. This book, after two very condensed and up-to-date summaries of the theory and practice, gives more success stories of using learning-styles-based teaching in diverse settings in higher education. It is a report and does not give practical tools. After reading a number of such reports, I have a query. Each person's learning style is biologically and developmentally determined. To what extent can we change that? If teachers can change their teaching styles, can we use the Learning Styles Model as a guide to help students to develop more flexibility in learning? After all, we may not always have people in our personal and professional life, who will match our learning styles. In a society that depends a lot on the visual mode for success, could we first teach all children to be more visual in learning and achieve greater positive outcomes without depending on teachers to match our own style of learning? I'd like to see more future research done in this direction instead.
