Useful and Hopeful
This book does not provide a step-by-step model of how to improve schools and communities, but it does emphasize the importance of active community outreach and community activism for schools. A pleasure to read.

Not just another marriage of convenience
Not just another marriage of convenience! When Grant Dennison's wife betrayed him and their marriage, she walked away, leaving him to parent their two young daughters on his own. But he knew he could always count on Tracey Ashford. A recent widow and his best friend, Tracey loved Grant's daughters as if they were her own. Just as she had always loved their father. Trouble was, Grant had no idea how Tracey really felt about him.

With Tracey's help, Grant managed to provide a good home for his daughters, but the one thing in their lives that was missing was a mother. Facing a promotion and move to another city, Grant was concerned about the effect moving away from Tracey would have on the girls. Until he hit upon the perfect solution for them all. He would ask Tracey to marry him and move with them. She would warm his bed and be by his side. His daughters would have a mother. And Tracey could finally be the mother she'd always yearned to be. Love was never part of the bargain. Or was it?

Ms. Rogers has written a touching and engrossing love story full of multi-dimensional characters. A touching story sure to stir readers' hearts.

Have realistic expectations, and enjoy
This is an excellent book for someone who wants to know just enough Greek to enjoy a vacation. I purchased this book five weeks before a trip to Greece, and found that I could order from a menu, give directions to a taxi driver, read Greek (could not always understand it), and exchange pleasantries. Now, I would like to refresh with this book, and then find an intermediate course to continue learning such a wonderful language!

"Dame Shirley" as a Gold Rush Source
Jim Rawls's book is a wonderful resource for children to study the reality of the typical mining town from heyday to ghost town. It includes a general description of the hardships endured by the miners as well as several examples of the effects of prejudice (and too much whiskey!) on the many "foreign" miners. I would have liked to see a few more direct quotes from the Dame Shirley letters, but the information is given using age-appropriate language and length. Definitely worth the time to read.

Trying to make sense out of the senselessness....
is what Shirley Frondorf does in her "after the fact" narrative of the famous Steinberg trial in Scottsdale, Arizona. Along the way, she gives those of us who have visited or lived in Scottsdale a good feel for what it was like in the '70's. The book appears to be an accurate accounting of what can happen when the victim is put on trial in criminal court and the prosecutor underestimates the defense. Although that is the primary reason for Steinberg going free from his brutal crime, Frondorf accurately describes all the lucky coincidences that fell into place in this miscarriage of justice. I can only imagine what it must be like to be one of the "players" in this story to review the events as detailed in the book. The shame and denial that must take place for the defense witnesses and the officers of the court that allowed such a farcical outcome are too hard to imagine. An interesting read regarding small town justice, compulsive gambling, and complete with some human interest pictures from the events, the "Dof a JAP" will hold your interest and make you wonder for years to come.

Fingernail and Tongue Diagnosis Classic?
I am a student of Chinese medicine, first year, and looked forward to this book, which was highly recommended. It is very didactic and gives many examples of different shapes and qualities of the fingernails, their basic meanings, and supports it with claims of fastidious research. However, it does not give any physilogical explanation of HOW the nail reacts to changes in the body, for instance, heat in the Large Intestine results in the middle finger developing white spots at the tips that expand according to the severity of the condition, but it does not explain why the nails reflect the different body states. One of the problems with the book is that it does not talk much about theory, only gives different examples of clinical experience, which was then interpreted to mean different things from the thousands of cases cited. The tongue section is equally helpful, and more detailed than the fingernail section.

Advantage? Do you know of another book that breaks down the fingernails like this one? I don't either. Any tool that we have for diagnosis without the use of machinery is precious. Thanks Doctor Chi for sharing all of your case studies. He also talks in the book about a "Wheel" that makes diagnosis easier. Be sure to ask that this wheel be included with the book. it is supposed to accompany the text.

Backwoods girl fights prejudice of the times, becomes doctor
Amazing story of a woman who was raised in tent, home schooled until 13, went to grade school where she was put into the senior class, entered college graduating at 16, was not allowed to enter medical school unless she married. She married a cold fish but had three children by him because she wanted children. She sold religious tracts to "buy her way into medical school". She was subjected to immense prejudice from the teachers and the students in medical school, but was one of two out of nine female students to graduate. When she began her practice, the school sent her entire salary to her husband who promptly used it to further his own ends. She became a legend in her area of practice and eventually became renowned in a large region of the USA for her diagnostic abilities and her humanitarian practice of medicine. She eventually divorced her husband and married a man who appreciated and dearly loved her. At her death one of her young patients had achieved fame and a high post in the United Nations and flew from Rome to attend her funeral. A great read, will hold you in its grip from cover to cover.
