Colors For Living
While I was initially attracted to the basic concept, layout, and the presentation of the color schemes in this book, many of the actual interiors seem extremely dated. I think that the color swatches at the back of the book are a useful resource, but for actual interior design ideas there are other books on the market that I feel are far superior.

Good information, Difficult to read
This book provided a solid introduction to community psychology, but it was very difficult to read. Most of this was because of small, dense text and numerous citations. They author used proper APA in-text citations, but they were so lengthy and numerous that you would read one sentence followed by a citation and two more sentences and another lengthy citation. The authors did provide solid examples of real life experience and research results that made the material seem salient and meaningful. This is the first edition and the book has a solid foundation, but I hope the next edition is a bit more user-friendly.

The Reality of War
In reading this book for a class on the history of Israel, I realized how great a toll the wars of Israel have taken on its citizens. The survival of Israel is of the utmost importance, but at what cost? So many have died, and not only do we mourn their deaths, but also grieve for those family members they have left behind. Early in the Summer of 1970 is comprised of three short stories: Early in the Summer of 1970, Missle Base 612, and The Last Commander. The first short story is about a Bible teacher in Israel who's son returns from the United States with a new wife and child, as he has been drafted into the Israeli army. The son, his wife and child, all set off for Jerusalem. One day at school, he is told his son has been killed. This moment, when he is informed of his son's sudden death, is the centerpiece of the story. The ending of the story and repercussions will make you think twice about how it feels to have a child sent off to war. The second story, Missle Base 612, is about a man who is exempt from guard duty since he has become a lecturer for the army. He lives in Tel Aviv with his wife (to whom he soon plans to divorce) and child, and he considers his on home a battlefront. He is sent to Missle Base 612 in the Sinai to give a lecture, but the soldiers do not seem interested in his idealogical thoughts, but prefer a movie instead. He leaves without giving the lecture, to come home and find that while those men in the Sinai are confronting war, so is he on the home-front. The last short story, The Last Commander, is about a unit which is sent away on "some business," and is quickly assigned a rather unqualified commander, Yagnon. He takes the unit out to a furrow, and stays there for seven days, remaining immobile and constantly sleeping, and telling his unit to do the same. Suddenly, a new company commander arrives to whip them into shape, and works them to the bone. They despise him for his demanding work ethics, and find themselves wishing that Yagnon would be their leader once again. Sure enough, the company commander leaves after only seven days, and the men lazily return to the furrow which they had previously disdained, but now appreciated. The theme of these three short stories is the value of human life in the context of war. To what extent should mankind be sacrificed for the sake of land? All at once, young people are forced to leave their naive adolescence behind and enter the cruel, cold world of war. A.B. Yehoshua, in Early in the Summer of 1970, seeks to bring to life the true realities and sadness of war.

Bernard Horn is too much the adoring disciple
After having read four of A.B. Yehoshua's novels, I can state with confidence that he is one of the finest writers around today; however, Mr. Yehoshua's political views are nothing if not controversial and Bernard Horn does the reader a disservice by tossing him one cream puff question after another.

Gates of Light/Sha'Are Orah
Translated in shockingly exoteric and readable fasion Gikatillia's "Shaareh Orah" uncovers the key's to the ten spheres. The book takes each of the ten and explicitly explains the name that it is attached to, and the cognomens that are used in reference to that sphere in the Tanakh. The book is eclipsed historicaly in importance by the Book of Splendor (Zohar), but it should not be overlooked. Indeed while the Zohar is hidden and recondite Gikatillia sets much of the same subject matter forth in clear 13th century philosophical style. A most important English translation of a classic Kabbalistic text.

A valuable addition to your Jewish book shelf
This book provides a valuable service to readers of the Hebrew Bible in that it makes Ibn Ezra's commentary comprehensible even to the non-scholar. The authors have based their work on scholarly interpretations of Ibn Ezra's sometimes telegraphic comments, which are often obscure in their original form. My main reservations concern the format of massive foot-noting, and the use of English transliterations instead of Hebrew in cases where the whole point of the commentary may be a fine distinction in spelling or vocalization of the Hebrew text.

Grant and Lincoln forge a new shape of military thinking.
A short account of the final days of the Civil War where Grant forces Lee into bloody battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Grant forces the Confederates to use their most precious resource--manpower, and wins the Civil War. Good insights on how Lincoln backed Grant to the full degree in his waging of the war. Also a good overview of the final days in both Richmond and Washington D. C. For those who doubt Grant's genius, they should read this book.

Actually, only two short stories about Lincoln's honesty
If you a doing a series of Character Building Books based on the lives of famous people, then obviously you would decide to learn about "honesty" from the life of Abraham Lincoln. Just off the top of my head I can think of six stories about "Honest Abe" that would be well worth sharing with young children. But ironically, only two of those stories make it into this book by Kiki Mosher and they are the only two stories that focus on his honest character. Obviously Lincoln's life has to be greatly reduced for this small volume, but since he is one of the most famous Americans, I have to think that most kids already know the basics of his life regarding the Civil War and his assassination. This should have allowed Mosher to work in a couple of more choice examples of Lincoln's honesty. Consequently, this book, which is illustrated with historic paintings and photographs opposite paragraphs of simple texts, is less than satisfactory as an introduction to Lincoln's life or as a lesson in his honesty. Most of the book is devoted to Lincoln's life. Some of the other titles in this first set of Character Building Books look at dedication I the life of Frederick Douglass, compassion with Florence Nightingale, and leadership with George Washington.

Continuation of the author's PhD disertation.
A little too dry and academic to be called gripping, it is still an interesting read about one of the great monuments and a building that has become part of the nations psyche. Also for a book on the design and creation of the memorial, I thought it was lacking in pictures documenting the building of the actual memorial. It has some, but I was hoping for more.
