The current state of holocaust studies (1998)
This weighty tome of 836 pages was designed as a summary of where the study and historiography of holocaust research stood a few years ago (1998). There are coherently arranged sections such as race and anti-semitism in nazi ideology, Jewish leadership and resistance, the rescuers and the survivor experience. The essays, written by a large number of contributors, are mostly in-depth and richly sourced studies. This reviewer found particularly insightful Louise London's account of the British government's response to German treatment of the Jews and Randolph Braham's summary of the holocaust in Hungary. Inevitably, the anthology has become a little outdated. Sources from former Soviet satellite countries are shedding new light on some issues and, in my opinion, holocaust denial arguments (however spurious) need more treatment in a book claiming to be a summary of "where we are and where we need to go."

Excellent workbook for its time
Used for many years as teaching tool in elementary school and later in adult education classes. The book was replaced in 1995 after selling close to one million copies. The replacement is Abraham Lincoln's Introduction to Handwriting and Calligraphy and is distributed by Hunt Manufacturing Company in Statesville, NC 28677. The new book is dedicated to introducing better handwriting for those using ballpoints and pencils using the italic form as a model. Students can use the same book to learn the calligraphy form writing with a chisel edged pen.

True Adventure
This is an excellent account of a trip group's travel in the rugged Lochsa River area. A series of poor decisions and heavy weather (always to be expected in this area) leads to trouble for the entire party.

Like other adventure tales from the turn of the century on is amazed at what they try to do with out the high tech fabrics and gadgets we have use today.

The story behind the greatest speech in American history
The Gettysburg Address is one of the two most famous speeches in American history, the other being Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech." But Lincoln's speech is the most important oration in our nation's history because before these 271 words were uttered at Gettysburg the United States did not really pay attention to the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and the idea that "all men are created equal." At the dedication of the National Cemetary at Gettysburg Lincoln declared that those who died did so in defense of that proposition. From that point on, all of the advances in civil rights in this country can be tied to the Gettysburg Address. When the nation was founded "men" meant free, adult, white, male, property owners. Consider today what is meant by "men" when we talk about equality in this country and you have an idea of what Lincoln set in motion. Without Lincoln's speech and the Union winning the Civil War, King would never have given his speech.

The only real shortcoming of "Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln: The Story of the Gettysbug Address" by Jean Fritz is that it fails to address the significance of the oration beyond the idea that it was a speech to remember. Fritz focuses on the story, both in general terms of the Civil War and the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the specifics of the occasion for the speech, including the sickness of Lincoln's son Tad and the lengthy oration by Edward Everett. The complete text of the speech is provided at the back of the book, which is a Level 3 All Aboard Reading book aimed at grades 2-3. The illustrations are mostly watercolors by Charles Robinson although there are also some historic photographs of Lincoln and his son. The important thing is that here is a book that tells the story of a great American speech and at least introduces to young students the idea that words can make a difference in the history of a nation.

An Informational Book About Lenin
This is a very informational book about Lenin. It is told in the third person form and describes Lenin's aspect of life. It shows him as a Russian hero and an American fear. I suggest this book to anyone that is doing a report on him. It gives more information than neccasery. The only drawback is on some topics it won't give many details.

War in Detail
This book is the third of a series of four books chronicling modern conflict.

Vol 1. The Arab Israeli Conflicts 1973-1989. Vol 2. The Iran-Iraq war. Vol 3. The Falklands and Afghanistan. Vol 4. The Gulf war.

These books provide an in depth analysis of the various forces engaged in the conflicts and the losses sustained by both sides. The authors have studied the weapons systems employed and the tactics used, and from these have drawn their conclusions on what was the route cause of success or failure in these modern military conflicts.

The authors conclusions are hardly mind shattering but they are sensible. Based on what happened and without an agenda.

Aside from errors concerning the Blowpipe missile (which manages to make an appearance in nearly all the wars) and its vulnerability to flares, (it isn't vulnerable at all) and the failure of this type of missile against crossing targets. (The operator's not the system itself) The books are quite accurate and thoroughly researched.

These series of books are a valuable tool for any student of modern conflict.
