Easy-to-read introduction to the holidays
This is the kind of book you would expect to see on the bookself in your rebbe's study. Yet, even for the lay person it provides an easy-to-read introduction to the evolution of the Jewish festivals and holidays.

In Joyce Reiser's family we learn of our own.
Joyce Reiser Kornblatt knows how to tell a story, as witnessed by her earlier NOTHING TO DO WITH LOVE and WHITE WATER. In BREAKING BREAD, she imagines a richly textured family as it emerges from the Jewish
Pale in Tsarist Russia and makes its way halfway across the world and into our time.

They Also Served.
Tom Abraham's autobiographical account of his experences in the jungles of Veitnam during that unpopular war shouldn't really raise eyebrows as it is the story of thousands, except this really is different.
Tom Abraham is British and he was a lieutenant in the US Army. This is not suppose to happen by US law as US service personel are not to be ordered by non-US born citizens.
That beside, all is explaned in his account of his ending up in the USA, his training as an officer and eventual placement in the harsh enviornment of South Vietnam.
The reason for the title is soon explained and the emotional trauma of post Vietnam and what Tom went through soon begins to take it's toll on him.
In conclusion a true story that sounds all to familar with the exception of a rare British perspective.

A very readable book on genomics and cancer
I picked up David M Prescott's Cancer- the Misguided Cell at a flea market. I have minimal background in genetics, genomics, and biology, but I do want to understand it in light of the fact that the Human genome is now almost completed by a company called Celera Genomics. This is going to be the greatest scientific achievement of all time, and I want to understand something about DNA, genetics and in particular cancer, since that is the biggest target of the genomics work. This little book is the best I have ever read It goes through DNA, RNA, proteins, and what happens or what goes wrong when cancer strikes and organism. The book is not a popular braod brush treatment with platitudes and fluff. It will teach you to understand how cells divide, how RNA replicates a cell, the inside of the cell and how proteins work. If I can understand these things from this book anyone can, with a little effort. The diagrams are consise and uncluttered and show each concept clearly, which is often not the case in books of this type. Jargon is used to a minimum and clearly defined and explained before it is used. It is truly a tutorial. If anyone wants to understand this important field that will affect all of us who breathe, I heartily recommend this book. I hope my review spurs a demand for it to be reprinted. It is important and needed. I also recommended it on the Motley Fool (Fool.com) Celera message board to all.

An Engaging Personal Account of a Lost World
Dr. Gannes presents an engaging and fascinating account of his childhood in the shtetl Winograd (near Zvenigorodka, southern Kiev district of Ukraine) during the years 1911 to 1921. This book provides an insight into the beauty and trials of life for a Jewish community as the Russian Empire struggled with revolution and reaction. The author, a leading Jewish educator, provides a first-hand description of early childhood education in that place and time as well as a detailed depiction of daily life.

MODERN JEWISH HISTORY THROUGH THE EXPERIENCES OF ONE FAMILY
VERY WELL WRITTEN,(ALTHOUGH A TRANSLATION FROM FRENCH I BELIEVE).EXCITING. IT WOULD EVEN MAKE A GREAT MOVIE! THE COINCIDENCES WORK LIKE A DICKENS NOVEL. THE STORY WORKS WELL EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT AS YET READ "THE BOOK OF ABRAHAM", WHICH THIS IS A SEQUEL TO.

Great resource for children, adults, and teachers
This photographic atlas is simple to read, yet detailed enough to provide a good geographic overview of the entire timeline in the Bible. Text is well-written, and maps are clear and comprehensive. It is great for children, but also provides a two-page historical summary and map for each event that is a perfect overview for adults and teachers as well. This would be a valuable reference resource for any church library

Another memorable quote from the book: "As civilization advances, the sense of wonder declines." What is amazing is that in college Economics and Sociology classes, the professors have taught similar things: that as our standard of living rises over time, there are both positive and negative consequences of which we should be aware. Heschel's book helps bring out some of what we lose through the advancement of society.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in religious philosophy, and anyone who has found very little solace in spirituality/self help books. (This book is not a self help book, by the way. It's much better than that.)
