Teegarden Review
A great book containing pictures, history, and stories on Teegarden ancestery. I bought the book for my girl friend and now am buying two more copies for other members in her family. One of the best buys for the money that I've seen. Does have a couple of errors, but is a great source.

The Decendants of Abraham Teagarden
I found this book very well written and informative. Errors are minor, but this is a good collection of facts about the Teagarden Family. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Teagarden Geneology. I was able to use it to make a "Family Tree--Geneology" model.

Abraham Tegarden
This book is truly a family treasure. My family first purchased the book back in the 1960's. Miss Vogt spent time with our family and was quite an interesting person. My grandmother sent correspondence to her for the first publication. It does do your heart good to pick up the book and read as well as see the pictures of our family. Somehow it brings the ones back to life that have passed. This book is a treasure!

Becuase our Mother loves us
In this book you can read the many messages from our Mother in heaven. She begs us repeatly to pray. She insist that we say the rosary and meditate on the life of Christ. She tells us to fast frequently on bread and water. She reminds us that the graces from the Mass and the Eucharist are heaven sent and our presence is required. She commands our full attention by her persistant appartitions throughout the world and through time. She tells us that we must decide for God. She desires that we turn away from the world and towards the light that she brings us from heaven. Her presence has been seen and experienced by thousands of people of various faiths. She has given signs and left signs behind of her presence. She has increasingly appeared during the last 100 years. She is warning us of the consequences to our world of our sinful behavior. Read this book and pass it on quickly to other people that you care about. Ask them to prayfully consider it's contents and to spread the word. Start your own personal daily pray routine. Ask others to join you or join other people in prayer. Pray for God's love and mercy on us all. Thank God for sending us our Mother to guide us.

Finally, Marian Devotions Presented as Universal Phenomena
Growing up Roman Catholic, especially during the 1950s, the church teaching about Marian apparitions were focused on a few well publicized "approved" phenomena. The apparitions themselves are mezmerizing stories and another way of bonding the faithful to their Catholicism. Of course, the apparations receiving the most favorable publicity are Guadalupe, Mexico; Fatima, Portugal; and Lourdes, France. "God Sent" is a book that lives up to its title. It's actually "God Sent" to read about the miraculous Marian apparitions in the context of the history of Christianity (especially in the Roman Catholic tradition, but not exclusively) and to also realize how the Marian phenomena are universal, even more prevelent than reported by the mainstream Roman Catholic media. My faith has been positively affected by reading "God Sent". I sincerely want to thank the author, Roy Abraham Varghese for taking the time to write such an eloquent history about The Blessed Virgin Mary and her frequent calls to humanity for prayer, peace and penance. Varghese writes about the Marian apparitions almost as though he personally witnessed them. Moreover, he explains the messages in ordinary language. My husband and I traveled to Lourdes, France, after reading "God Sent" and the spiritual experience of being in this special shrine located in the French Pyrennes Mountains was more meaningful when understood in the context of nearly all Marian apparitions documented since the first century. Frankly, I wish "God Sent" was more readily available in bookstores. As a thorough history of Marian devotions, "God Sent" deserves to be a best selling book if, for no other reason, than to help ordinary readers appreciate Varghese's extraordinary research into the important history of Marian devotions in Roman Catholic spirituality.

A must for anyone with a devotion to the Blessed Virgin!
This book is well-researched, with beautiful color pictures of the Blessed Virgin as she appeared throughout the centuries and all over the world. An inspiring, thought-provoking book, with endless information about the Mother of God and her role in humanity and in divinity. Renewed my faith and inspired me to a more prayerful life.

Demolishes the Mudd family spin...
This book proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the "good doctor" was completely guilty of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth. Despite the way the Mudd family has manipulated the story and the media for decades, the truth is finally coming out!!!

A Must for Assasination Buffs
A True account of Mudd's involvement. Though he cried foul, "The guilty dog barks the loudest".

THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED ANALYSIS OF MUDD'S COMPLICITY WITH JWB
The Notes' section alone is worth the cost of the book!

AIDS in America, really
I read first this book shortly after its initial publication. The impact was enormous. I even went to a signing event an hour away from where I lived. What made this book great was that not only it talked about the real tragedy in rural, little educated America, that AIDS wrought there, but it was finely written, with feeling, and instructive. Such a rare blend in this type of litterture. This was not a report from the front, it was also the journey of a man whose whole life principles are challenged, and changed in front of other people's tragedy. Today, as I read it again, it has already that flavor of historical witnessing, but its emotion is still fresh. For those of us that are blase about too many tragedies in our lifes, we could read this book again to regain some of the compassion that we might have misplaced as our everyday life demanded our atention.

Full of fun, fear, folk and family stories
Dr. Verghese beautifully captures the Appalachian essence of innocence and trust, and the clash that happens when a feared viral intruder puts its mark on relatives and neighbors. The exposure and initiation of a foreigner to country ways and mindset makes for some comical moments. The text is very creative, expressive and easy to read

A compelling view of the onset of AIDS in rural Tennessee.
"My Own Country" combines medical fact with compelling personal history in a way that reveals the true nature of human understanding for what is "foreign" to us all. Dr. Abraham Verghese comes to rural Tennessee as the foreign graduate of a foreign medical school; rural Tennessee being one of the few areas that will allow him to practice in the United States. At the time of his arrival, the AIDS epidemic arrives as well. Dr. Verghese relates the stories of the victims and their families in the setting of his own acceptance among these bewildered people. Through careful detail, Dr. Verghese is accepted among the citizens of Johnson City, Tennessee, just as they slowly come to accept the reality of the AIDS virus and its consequences in their lives. Told in language easily understood by non-medically trained readers, this story becomes a history of our people and their ability to adapt to difficult and heart-rending life experiences. Dr. Verghese celebrates the ability of the human spirit to accept disease and its consequences while he uses his keen sense of observation to show his own acceptance among these "new people." Dr. Verghese's ability for insight into the pain and suffering of patients families and the ultimate triumph of our compasionate nature is beautifully rendered. This book cannot be recommended highly enough for the many areas in which it succeeds. Ultimately, the book becomes a history of AIDS, medicine and the way both interact with victims who little understand the disease itself.

Wonderful Story
This book is one of the best Biblical novels I've ever read. I've read it over and over and over, and never tire of it. I cannot recommend this book enough.

gripping
This book takes you into God's history and tries to fill in on Abraham's life. It gives you possible reasons for why he acted like he did and glimpses into what his life might have been like. I found this book very hard to put down and extremely easy to pick back up. Each time I have read it, I find new details in it that I passed over before. I would recommend this book to anyone.

My very favorite in the series. I want to be like him.
This book in wonderful. I couldn't put it down, I feel like I walked with Abraham on his journey of faith. Her ability to bring a character to life and fill in the blank spaces is truly a gift . I would love to read it again.....but I can't wait to get to the other books by Ellen.

Abraham in Egypt

My wife bought me a copy of this book for Christmas
It is facinating to compare The Book of Abraham (Joseph Smith) with similar books that have recently been unearthed. Harold Bloom, the Yale scholar of religion believed that Smith had it right because he had tapped into a universal flow of inspiration, but the names, myths and structure make the Book of Abraham the most accessible of the apocalpses of Abraham.

Nibley does an incredible job of bringing together scores of documents into one volume for comparison purposes. He also has some fun with various critics of the book, almost all of whom lack any background in the literature that the book claims to be a part of.

Reading the book, and checking the sources, one starts to wonder if a wandering Slavonic Jewish scholar of Abrahamic literature didn't spend a winter at the Smith homestead ...

Well written and a great Christmas gift.

Egyptology from a LDS perspective
Nibley delves into critics of Joseph Smith's Facsimiles and their qualifications. The facsimilies are also compared with knowledge currently available in the field of Egyptology. Comparative analysis of ancient Abrahamic texts (i.e. The Apocalypse of, and Testament of Abraham) with Joseph Smith's Book of Abraham is done. A history of Abraham's time, sacrifices of him, Sarah and Isaac and early history of Egypt is given. Possible historical figures for Isis, Horus, and Seth are discussed, as well as Egypt's type of government. This is broad in scope, yet detailed, with numerous footnotes, and sketches. Nibley's humorous style, coupled with a depth that leaves no doubt as to his scholarship expands the horizons of amateur and professional alike.

A great improvement
This book is well worth buying, even if you own the first edition. This edition is expanded and includes illustrations by the same guy who did "Temple and Cosmos." One thing I really liked was that the text was cleaned up so that references were changed to endnotes, instead of parenthetical citations which is how they were in the first ed. This really increased readability. Nibley's research is for obvious reasons dated, but he himself says that research is a process, not an end to itself. This book still contributes greatly to the understanding of the Book of Abraham.

I have the original....
I have the original 1894 version of this book and have enjoyed it for many years. The perspective of battles is fresh in comparison to the history books of today. There is so much more in this book, the engravings and pictures are wonderful. I would highly recommend even a copy.

Stunning clarity, written with clear memory of the war
This review comes from a reading of the original 1894 edition. Filled with many obscure and forgotten details, this book is a treasure for Civil War historians. Songs, complete with full lyrics, as well as specific orders of battle give this reading a timely presence. Written in the traditional language of the era, the events have a kind of realism that brings you face to face with history. Originally this volume was sold by subscription only @ N.Y. BY KNIGHT AND BROWN. After having this book in my possession for many years it is very exciting to see that it has been reprinted at long last.

Campfire and Battlefield
The Civil War was the most important conflict the U.S. has ever been involved in, bar none. The military, ethical, and governmental consequences have been enormous. Campfire & Battlefield gives us a unique perspective of this great event.

There is no limit to this man's understanding.
I knew Heschel's spiritual power. But, these essays demonstrate his understanding of the world and its need for grand thinking and courage that only a few like Heschel are have been able to muster. This man is a treasure. He just may be what God wants of us.

A Vital Work
This collection of essays is a bold and intimate portrait of Heschel's Judaism and what it means to us as American Jews.

An Excellent Work!
A warm yet intellectual compilation of that great thinker. To the Heschel Scholar, it once again proves the undeniable fact, that though he was liberal in his political views, his views on Judaism were deeply rooted in his pious Chassidic ancestry. This book like Heschel's classic "The Earth Is The Lord's" makes you wonder if Heschel - though a faculty member at JTS, is to be considered a "Conservative Jew"? or perhaps it is time to acknowledge that he may have been an Orthodox one after all. All in all a wonderful, warm book for all people of all persuasions.

A Long Strange Trip
Like many people, I'd seen the factoid that Einstein's brain was kept in a box in Kansas, and always wondered about the full story. Running across this book I was very happy to finally get that story, told in a way that was engaging and fairly honest about everyone's role in the story (to the extent that's possible).

The only reason I'm giving the book four stars instead of five is that I found that my interest waned significantly over the last 50 to 75 pages. I think it had to do with the shift towards more science and less biography, though I'm not sure there was a way to write this book without the shift (it isn't huge, but it is noticable).

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Einstein, but perhaps even more to anyone who likes quirky history or biography.

Impressive!
I had recently read "Driving Mr Albert: A Trip Across America With Einstein's Brain" by Michael Paterniti. I stumbled across this book at my local library, and thought, keeping with the trend of Einstein, it would be a nice addition to my mental collection of books. I was blown away by Carolyn Abraham's writing. I am 14 years old, and obviously not in any way a medical or college student. However, Abraham's writing was clear and concise. The author used understandable language along with scientific terms in a way that I was able to learn and comprehend new ideas and terms. In short, Abraham knew what she was talking about. Her transitions were interesting, but never confusing. The ability to describe--in considerable detail--the journey of about 50+ years of a mild-mannered pathologist and his amazing secret that was Einstein's brain is the mark of a superb writer, and I commend Carolyn Abraham for it.

Fascinating
I can't add much to what other reviewers have said. I picked up this book to learn what had been discovered scientifically by studying Einstein's brain, and ended up learning about much, much more. Interesting subplots include Einstein as a person (husband, father, man) and other trends in brain research.
