The scenic drives described have been well researched.
The author has researched the scenic drives described in this book thoroughly. There is information included for people of all ages to enjoy from scenic photography to hiking and fishing. Also included are listings of travel services on each scenic drive.

This is definitely the best guide of its kind I've seen.
I've just spent some time driving all over the state of Wyoming. Before I went, I looked at every guide book I could find at local libraries and travel book stores. Laurence Parent's book is one of those that I chose to take with me, and I used it throughout the trip. Every chapter was filled with accurate, interesting information. Some of the best places to see in Wyoming are away from the major tourist areas and some are completely ignored by other (many larger) books that I had.

Fantastic book on Shakespeare
This winter break I went on a Shakespeare buying spree, and this book is one of the fine gems I found. A large, but fascinating book, this work of great scholarship and excitement takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Shakespeare, even into rather obscure corners of his works (Trollius and Cressida, Timon of Athens). This book is a must read for any would be deep thinker about Shakespeare.

The New Shakespeareans
Shakespeare as Political Thinker is a must for everyone interested in the political thought of William Shakespeare. This reprint will finally allow new comers to become familair with a commonsensical approach to Shakespeare's plays. The introductory chapter by John Alvis is worth the price. Perhaps the best Shakespearean critic alive, Alvis has an uncanny ability to show Shakespeare's moral seriousness without making the bard an unquestioning adherent to any political school or theological creed. Many of the essays that follow are also well done: Jaffa's chapter on Shakespeare's entire corpus, Laurence Berns' meditation on Lear etc.

The second printing of Shakespeare as Political Thinker gives hope to those interested in relearning ancient wisdom and pays tribute to its inspiration, Shakespeare's Politics (Allan Bloom).

Vulgar and wonderful
"The sporting life" is an odyssey in an american effort to preserve the european tradition of hunting and fishing. Vulgar, but absolutely wonderful.

A celebration for the American Sporting Life traditions
I love this book!. My copy, which I bought some years ago is getting rather worn for the many times I've re-read it and browsed through its pages, discovering new small details every time in its wonderful pictures. The book reflects the deep old involvment of Americans with land and its flora and fauna, as well as its reverence and respect for it. It shows the traditions of Americans, and their concern for keeping them alive. A lovely book, nice to read and nice to view its photographs.

Private homes, fishing and hunting lodges, collections of hunting and fishing memorabilia and old books, together with old decoys, nice interior decor and furniture are delightful to be seen. I'd surely would love to find another book with a similar content and approach to this subject to enjoy as much as I enjoyed this one!

Spring Pearl: The Last Flower

A great charector
I love Spring Pearl's book! It taught me some much about the Chinese culture.I like how she acted around the people she was with, she didn't go off and start yelling like we usually do.She has a great charector trait of patience.
I also liked how everybody thought she was worthless and couldn't do anyhting, but in the end she proved how useful she really was to them.

Spring Pearl-Story of a brave and stubborn girl
Spring Pearl, by Laurence Yep, as part of the Girls of Many Lands series from American girl, is a book about a girl living in 1850's China . Her mother and father are dead and she has to go and live with a friend of her father's . The friend's family is very rich and is not used to doing things for themselves, unlike Spring Pearl. Many times in the book her strong education gets her out of trouble. This book will make you feel like you are right there in the 1850's in China during the Opium wars. Spring Pearl is an outstanding story for girls who like books about brave young women. This story made me have a fondness for historical fiction.

Lucid presentation of statistical concepts
After sifting through dozens of texts, I thought I would never find one that combined the conceptual clarity of Tal's "Reading Between the Numbers" with the procedural thoroughness found in a traditional introduction to statistics. Then I came across this book. It is exceptionally well-written, and the chapter problems include questions that require thoughtful written responses. The only noticeable omission is significance testing for proportions. But having to go elsewhere if needed for fill-in material is a small price to pay for this gem of a text.

If you afraid of stats--this it the book for you!
This is a great book for those who are starting out in statistics. The author is able to explain quite difficult statistical concepts in a way the reader will be able to understand.

Authors: Laurence Anholt and Sheila Moxley

Superb!
There are a few picture books out about Mary Anning! All of them are good, but this is THE ONE to read to younger kids! The illustrations are vibrant and colorful. The story is punchy and fun! Kids will be amazed by the story of a young girl who gets struck by lightning as an infant, survives, and as a child finds the fossil of one of the world's largest dinosaurs! It's all true! There's even a dog companion! Buy it and read it to your kids, they won't soon forget it!

The most moving children's book I've read in ten years
I can't remember a more beautifully written children's book since my children were born. The way the story was told was so simple and yet so powerful, I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone with children. I read it to my 3 and 5 year old girls and they ask for it every night. Simply beautiful.

A "Sweet" tale for teens
This book was my older son's favorite books growing up. Lauremce Yep's thoughtful tale of a human boy whose simple life on a distant world is shattered by the appearance of an native alien who not only opens his eyes to the reality of prejudice but also shows him the courage to defend and be proud of the most important things in his life, especially his family.

Get this book for you young teen, and they will thank you for it.

Wonderful ...is all I can say.
I've listened to this book over and over, and each listening reveals at least one major "Wow! Of Course! I can see that now."
I can't say that about many, or even any, other book or tape - of the dozens and dozens I've read and listened to.

What the Culture Doesn't Teach You
This book can change your life. Feel like you are always chaseing rainbows, but never reaching the pot of gold? Have too much stuff, but never enough? Fed up with your job, but don't know what else to do because it pays just enough to keep you affluent, but not enough to be independent? YOU NEED THIS BOOK.

The Tao of Abundance will help you examine your relationship to things, to money, to work and to yourself. More than that it will help you understand how you are being manipulated by things outside of yourself - and how you can break free of that manipulation to gain control of your thinking, your goals and your life.

This a terrific book. I have worn out one copy of the printed version, given another away (OK lent to my brother and never had it returned), bought a second, and bought the tape to listen to in the car.

A useful reference work for teachers of American History
We all know that every American History textbook leaves out lots of important events, people, and things that may well be worth knowing. "The Timetables of American History" is a very useful reference work for those teaching/learning about American History because if you are studying something big like the Civil War or something relatively small like the Scopes Trial, this book shows you what was happening at the same time in science, art and politics. This book can be useful in providing topics for bulletin boards or student reports on any period in American History you happen to be covering. If your history book does not tell you what scientific inventions were developed during the Great Depression, what Americans were reading during the Vietnam War, or who the greatest painter of the early 19th century in the United States, then this is the book you want to add to your reference collection.

The Timetables of American History, updated edition
A wonderfully concise look at American History in respect to other happenings around the globe. I read this book at our local library and was so impressed with it that I decided to order it from Amazon.com!

The Typhoon of War: Micronesian Experiences of the Pacific War
Published in Hardcover by University of Hawaii Press (January, 2001)
Authors: Lin Poyer, Suzanne Falgout, and Laurence Marshall Carucci
Amazon base price: $57.00
Average review score:

Things I Always Wanted to Know
The Typhoon of War preserves important information about a people at a time that has received little attention from historians or anthropologist. For me it has opened doors I never even knew were there. As a kid living in Micronesia right after World War II, I didn't conceive that the "natives" would be anything other than eternally grateful for the American presence. I recognized differences between the people of Guam and Truk but it was mainly that some spoke better English, or were darker, and some lived in better houses. That some of them might actually look back to Japanese times as "better" was unthinkable. As I grew older, I began to perceive that perhaps we could have done a better job as saviors/colonizers than we did. Now in retirement I collect books about Micronesia and occasionally travel there. I guess I'm still trying to understand better this place I've been. The Typhoon of War is the book I've been waiting for to do just that.

And why should you read this book if you have no interest in Micronesians. It's thick, dense and won't keep you up all night. Here's why; to help you understand how we in America deal with other places (Viet Nam, Bosnia, Africa) and how we might improve our success by actually trying to understand what the people living there think.

Typhoon is a wonderful piece of historiography
The three authors of The Typhoon Of War, Poyer, Falgout, and Carrucci, have done an excellent job of researching and writing a wonderful piece of seamless historiography. Not only that, but they have written on a subject that has been left relatively untouched for too long, the role of Micronesians in World War II, on whose land the Japanese, the Americans, and their allies fought their war in the Pacific.

A multitude of books have been written on the subject of World War II in the Pacific, and new volumes continue to be produced every year. Yet, few of these hundreds of books have ever devoted more than a paragraph or two, if that, to what happened to the native people who have inhabited this far flung universe of islands for thousands of years. The Typhoon Of War, has corrected that oversight. For those readers, both professional and lay, who are constantly looking for new insights into the greatest and bloodiest conflict in the history of man will find more here than they might in the multitude of generic texts that have reproduced the same general chronology, ad nauseam, over the past fifty years.

I don't know any of the authors, but I am familiar with some of their individual earlier works from which I assume sprang this collective effort. Their bibliography is likewise impressive. They have bypassed little that has gone before them in what up until now has been a rather obscure area of research for all but a few academics. Having lived in the Mariana Islands for five years myself, and having done my own research in the area of World War II oral history amongst the islanders, I see that the authors have also used a variety of unpublished, yet valuable sources, such as the collection of oral histories collected in the 1980s and early 1990s by researchers at the University of Guam, Dr. Dirk Ballendorf, Dr. Don Shuster, and Wakako Higuchi.

Much of what I have read in The Typhoon Of War has confirmed what I have concluded from my own research, primarily, that the typhoon of war that swept the islands of Micronesia was the most defining experience of these people since the cataclysmic coming of the Spanish more than 350 years ago.
