An honest look at rural Provence in the mid-20th century
For those interested in a thoughtful, genuine look at day-to-day life in rural France in the post-World War II era, this is a delightful book. It is not the glib, quick laugh of a nouveau wine -- more the thoughtful, lively reflection of a well-aged premier cru to be enjoyed leisurely. It is the France of an almost bye-gone era -- in this case, rural Provence. If you have the taste to enjoy Bandol wines, Pagnol films, a dinner at Chez Panisse in Berkeley (which I believe French wine merchant Kermit Lynch once called "the finest restaurant in the South of France"), or the stunning photography of Gail Skoff, then you will savour this book.

Truely refreshing
Laurence Wiley,a former professor of sociology at Harvard, wrote this wonderful little book in the 1950's. This charming examination of life in the town of Rousillon(which he calls Peyrane to protect it's privacy)captures the the character of French life in the postwar recovery period. As a reader you will be transported back in time to a simpler life among the hill towns of Provence.Laurence gives us the facts about the history of the town, and from where the people came (surprisingly it was a transient population). He tells us about how they are brought up,educated, their adolescent times, their whole lives. There are many delightful personalities in this book-you will enjoy it.I just hope someone will use it for a movie one day.

gripping and clear look of WWI front lines
Compiled and edited by Laurence Housman (Professor of History, Yale University), War Letters Of Fallen Englishmen is an emotional and compelling collection of primary sources surveying the horrors of World War I, from the writings of Englishmen and three Englishwomen who ultimately joined England's "Lost Generation". WWI casualties disproportionately wiped out the British force's officers, and those officers were usually drawn from the more educated upper class, therefore officers and the upper class are much more heavily represented in War Letters Of Fallen Englishmen than enlisted men, though there is testimony from both segments of the British population. A gripping and clear look of WWI front lines, so real as to make the reader grateful that he or she is not physically there, War Letters Of Fallen Englishmen is a unique and welcome contribution to WWI Military History supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Another great book the the genius Larry Rickels!
I was one of the readers for this fantastic collection and enthustiastically recommnded it be published. I am happy to see it is now out. Rickels is, in my view, the most brilliant and profound thinker of his generation. His own work on groups, psychoanalysis, Germany and California, adolescence, and "psy-fi" is consistenty thought provoking, and with _Acting Out in Groups_ we see that he is an equally provocative editor. The essays in the volume are consistently excellent.

Well Organized and Insightful
I am currently enrolled in a course entitled The Psychology of the Adolescent Learner at Cleveland State University in Ohio, and this is the required text for the course.

Professor Santrock's text is well organzied; chapters 1-4 provide a solid conceptual framework in childhood development, then beginning with Chapter 5 the text goes into more specific topics such as Family, Sexuality, Culture, etc.

I greatly enjoy the way the chapters of this book are laid out. You are first presented with an outline to let you know where you are headed, then the chapter is broken down into "bite-sized" portions with plenty of definitions. The material is clearly written, concise, and thorough. I would recommend this text to anyone interested in studying about this enigmatic of all stages in the life cycle.

Powerful and diverse supernatural stories -- 1908 to 1940.
Ash-Tree's Annual Macabre 1999 (88-5) is just out, edited by Jack Adrian and providing a treat with powerful and diverse stories originally published between 1908 and 1940 - and not reprinted since, until now. Each protagonist has a very different encounter with supernatural forces and worlds in this gathering of seven short works by lesser-known, talented writers.

I'm 26, and I love having this book on my coffee table.
I can't believe this book is supposed to be for ages 4-8. I am a college graduate, and I enjoy reading this book and looking at the pictures. Plus...it looks great on my coffee table (when I can put it down).
