Mariner's Employment Guide
Have purchased several such books over the years dealing with information on U.S. Merchant Marine, however, this is by far the best I've read. Have also called the publisher and ordered directly with them two other of their company directories, also excellent books for the price.

Good but incomplete
For those of you who want to get a good feel for the different types of market timing tools there are out there, i.e. if you want to trade the Spydrs or Diamonds or even the QQQs, this book will give you a good start at understanding how to use the TRIN and the VIX, probably two of the best data streams for this purpose. But if you want to take a look at a terrific suite of market timing indicators, you should check out Connors' Trading Connors' VIX Reversals.

A good book on neural learning
After reading the table of contents of this book I came to know that this book is good in the area of neural learning. Forthmore this book is covering information on unsupervised learning & covering topics like local synaptic learning & hebbian learnig. The applications for feature extraction & sensory receptive fields are of my interest. This book is useful for UG & PG students. Thanking you,

Old DOT [Dict of Occupational Titles] looks out of dark ages
Far superior to old DOT. This ONE book gives info concisely yet on far more Job Titles and has cross references to legacy Dept. of Labor publications. I eagerly jumped on the internet to follow up some leads. When JIST gets all the info up on their website it will be a fantastic resource. I hope they make full book available to bonifide buyers online - cut & paste beats typing! The 4 star rating was based by overly broad Job Titles seeming to inflate the SVP [Specific Vocational Preparation] and GED [General Educational Developement] requirements. This could skew the perception that the goal is less achievable and cost(s) exorbitant. We specifically researched 31514 Vocational & Education Counselor DOT 187.167-198 Veterans Contact Representative. This gave SVP 7 [>2 years and

For fans of the Oliviers and English theater in general
An 8X9 paperback with selected BL&WH photos to accompany personal tributes to Sir Laurence. Among the most well-known, especially to American audiences are, of course, Joan Plowright; Maggie Smith, Jeremy Brett, Michael Caine, Alan Bates. Shows Sir Laurence at work as director, actor and some casual shots. Also pictured are Derek Jacobi, Michael Blakemore, Peter Hall. Loved especially the number of photos with Joan Plowright as a younger stage actress. This book is done with professionalism and dignity. A good supplement to Olivier's autobiographies.

THE BOOK PRESENTS VERY USEFULL INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVOLUTION OF THE VW, INDICATING FOR EACH YEAR, SINCE 1945, THE MAIN CHANGES. IN RESUME THE BOOK LOOKS LIKE A BARGAIN BOOK, BUT HAS INFORATION LIKE A CONSULTING BOOK. I WILL RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO MY FRIENDS, THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THE VW. A discovery of the origins of Paul Bunyan-based on reality!
A wonderful history of lumbering and tree fellers in the 1800's. Particularly interesting account of a man named Joe Fournier who author claims; (and presents a valid case) was the lumberjack who set the poems and stories in motion that ended in the now legend of Paul Bunyan.

Informative and fascinating
The books I have read in this series, Black Americans of Achievement, have all been terrific. They are clearly written and easy for children to understand. They have marvelous black and white illustrations and photographs throughout. Each illustration and photograph has a caption that gives the reader more information about places, people, and events related to the subject of the biography.

The length of the books is just right. These books are long enough to cover the important events in the subject's life and to meet the requirements that teachers often give for book reports (a book longer than 50 pages. Yet they are short enough that they don't intimidate elementary school children. (This biography of Paul Laurence Dunbar has 110 pages.)

These books are well organized and informative. In the back are an appendix, a chronology of the person's life, a bibliography, and an index.

The biography of Paul Laurence Dunbar was fascinating. I am curious to know more about this poet, especially his religious beliefs. Also, I would like to read more of his writings. He had many obstacles to overcome, such as being poor and black at a time when racism was rampant. (He lived from 1872 to 1906.) Yet he worked hard, took risks, and persevered until he achieved his dream of being a successful poet and author. He was a very talented poet who inspired other black poets such as Langston Hughes. However, the latter years of his life were sad and tragic as he became chronically ill and developed an alcohol problem. Details about his alcohol problems were omitted, as is appropriate in a book written for elementary children. I am now interested in reading an adult biography and am curious to know if he turned to God for comfort in his despair.

Biased opinion
I have been enjoying this book mostly because it is the story of my great great grandfather's sister, Mother Marianne. The personal history about the life of one of my ancesters and the times she lived in is facinating. I am also interested in the history of the island of Hawaii, which I had only thought of as a vacation spot before this book. The conflicts and politics of the early colonial powers is something I had never even heard about. I am only halfway through, but its a good book to show what immigrant life in the US was like in the late 1800's, as well as the life and choices of women in that time. What is shows of the treatment of the Hawaiians is sad.

Unpleasant topics, but ideologically important
The plays of Bernard Shaw span many years and cover many topics. While many of Shaw's works are entertaining as well as enlightening, the plays in this volume (written very early in his career) tackle complex issues that concern society. These plays force us to critically view how success in the world is judged. They demonstrate how any of us may unknowingly be an accomplice to or a participant in activities to which we stringently object on a moral basis. This is pertinent in society today! The works in this volume open our eyes. . .and we may not like what we see. In summary, the plays in this volume are important, although they will hopefully make the reader feel somewhat uncomfortable. A well planned anthology of Shaw's work should be part of any college education
