A Treasure Trove Of Spiritual Insight
Freeman is a Benedictine monk and the successor of John Main as the spiritual guide of The World Community for Christian Meditation. The question of Jesus, Who do you say that I am, can be answered, Freeman suggests, only as we grow in self-awareness, and the answer to that question will in turn lead us to greater self-knowledge. A friendship of mutual recognition and self-revelation between Jesus and us grows step by step as we see Jesus in the gospels, in a new way of looking at God and God's forgiveness, in the sometimes unlikely guise of the church, in the realm of the Spirit, in the labyrinthine ways of meditation. That is the briefest outline; but there is much more in this book than can be summarized here. It is a treasure almost too densely packed with ideas to be fully grasped at a single reading. Freeman is a writer of very broad knowledge, deep insight, and spiritual wisdom; and he knows well and draws upon eastern religions to very good effect. Definitely worth a read.

Jesus the Teacher Within
Spiritual seekers looking for a comprehensive and in-depth study of Jesus, one that leads to an expansion of consciousness, will want to read this book. It inspires, informs and addreses the human heart at the depth of its longing. By exploring the question posed by Jesus: "And you, who do you say I am?" (MT 16:15) Freeman takes the reader on a psychological and spiritual journey into their own true nature. Like one sitting at the loom of experience Freeman weaves together insights from other spiritual traditions, as well as references from literature and his own life, that give the reader a fresh and new understanding of the person of Jesus. The book is grounded in solid Christian theology yet anticipates the reader of the 21st century. It is a book for those who are spiriually hungry and for those who want to move beyond spiritual and intellectual patterns of belief that no longer fit or limit a deeper experience of faith.

Jesus, the Teacher Within - Freeman
On the first page of his book, "Jesus, the Teacher Within," Father Freeman recounts the gospel's account of the last days of Jesus. Faced with the apostles' narrative of his accusers'depictions of him, Jesus asks, "And, who is it you say I am?" Freeman's belief is that in order to answer this question, the apostles and today's Christians must look into their hearts and first determine who they are and how their identities relate to Jesus as savior, messiah, man and god.

Father Freeman is a follower of the teaching of John Main. John Main was a Benedictine monk who taught the path to true spirituality and compassion should include meditiation, contemplative prayer. John Main and Father Freeman's view of Christianity is very receptive to Eastern thought, particularly, Buddhism. In fact, the Dalai Lama writes the Introduction to this book.

This is an exceptionally well reasoned, important and artistic book.

May I give 6 stars?
My teacher at my tutoring school has this book. He said the Allyn & Bacon is his second brain where he stores his important Grammer and Usage techniques. I was interested with what he said; so I bought one myself from Amazon. This was the only reason I bought this book.

However, after I had received this book, I found this to be quite useful for the SAT II writing test. It would be a great reference guide whenever I need help with word usages, paragraph formats, punctuations, critcal thinking techniques, etc.

This book is wonderful. If I can give more than 5 stars, I would.

You can never go wrong
The Allyn&Bacon Handbook is the most invaluable reference book I have ever come across. Originally purchased for guidance on formal composition, the book has helped me with everything from letter writing to revision. It contains valuable information on just about every writing topic. This book is an excellent companion for anyone taking an English course.

Animal Monsters
I read Animal Monsters and I thought it was a great book. I thought it was a good book because it told me lots of interesting facts about animals that I used to think were scary. I think other people would read it because if they were scared of these creatures they would not be scared anymore. I recommend this book to kids and adults seven years and older. Animal Monsters is a great book and I hope you read it too.

Baptism, broadly speaking...
Laurence Hull Stookey, in the epilogue to his book Baptism: Christ's Acts in the Church, gives a very personal interpretation to the meaning of baptism for him:

'Baptism has changed my perception of the future. The same God who claimed me before I could understand, through that very act gives me hope for a future that I cannot comprehend.' (pp. 180-181)

Baptism is a powerful action, one that incorporates an individual into the community. Despite the near-universal acceptance of baptism as a fundamental Christian practice, there is still a great amount of confusion and theological disarray (a term Stookey uses, which reminds me of Joe Jones' frequent use as well) surrounding the meaning and actual ritual enactment.

Stookey warns against seeing baptism as a magical act. This is not something that should be seen as a transformative act that works independent of the intentions and meaning attached to it by the individuals and community participating. However, there is a fine line that is often crossed between the theory of baptism and the practice of baptism.

'Early in the third century, Tertullian ... stated this worthy assertion, which establishes that the ministry of baptism is not the exercise of some magical power, nor is it the prerogative of an elite group. All can share equally what they themselves have received equally. When it came to practice as distinct from principle, Tertullian was more restrained.' (p. 67)

The entire community is called to participate in the baptism of members; frequently (as in my own tradition) when a new member is being baptised, all other members present are called upon to renew their own baptismal vows. This can be particularly meaningful and important in a tradition that practices infant baptism, for many (or most) individuals will not be able to recall the actual experience of their own baptisms.

Stookey permits the practice of infant/child baptism, on the grounds that it is part of the community's action, and so long as the community accepts responsibility for those it baptises, children may be included.

'Baptism is for those committed to the Christian faith and community, and for their children. This presses upon the church the necessity of being what the church is intended to be: a family of Christ's people who disciple, nurture, and encourage one another in faith.' (p. 49)

Baptism is the mark of being part of a church as a community of covenant, in relationship with God and with each other. Stookey argues for adult commitment to the process of baptism, but that this commitment can extend to the education and incorporation of children into the community. Stookey also argues against rebaptism. If baptism is 'a ritual action [that] has the power to communicate and incorporate', the baptised person is already part of the community, and it becomes a matter for pastoral leadership to lead the person who might be seeking rebaptism into other forms of expression - baptismal renewal, confirmation, reaffirmation are possible means for this. (p. 26)

Baptism is not simply a physical action, but rather is a multi-sensory experience that reaches out of several emotional and mental levels.

'While the very existence of sacramental actions and things is testimony that words are not everything in communicating the faith, this by no means indicates that words are unimportant.' (p. 135)

The words help express the desires and intentional aspects of the action, while the physical aspects carry meanings that reach many levels conscious and subconscious. Thus, Stookey argues for an incorporation of those he refers to as 'retarded' and 'senile', both in baptism and in communion, for some of the many-layered meanings may be able to be understood by those in ways those more 'normal' might not comprehend.

Baptism is, finally, a great equaliser. Through baptism all are made part of the body of Christ, and part of the adopted family of God.

'Baptism also gives us a vision of a new social order. All of us come to baptism as sinners equally guilty before God, and all of us come away from baptism as those who have been made God's adopted sons and daughters through grace. Once we grasp this, any supposed superiority based on race, social class, gender, or nationality is exposed as a lie.' (p. 37)

We all become responsible to and for each other. As Stookey concludes, there is is no greater comfort on earth for him than that he is baptised, and part of the family of God, the body of Christ. This is perhaps the ultimate purpose of baptism.

Beautiful, lucid, gentle--a gift to any believer
This lovely book has put an end to the believer vs. infant baptism debate for many by gently illustrating in a number of ways that baptism is Christ's act--not man's or woman's--and that acceptance of that gift is not one of the intellect, but one of faith. Stookey traces the history of baptism from its primitive streambed roots to primitive early church rituals to modern-day derivations, calling the reader into deeper questions and encounters with each century's development. At the end of the journey, I felt refreshed and confirmed in that faith which led me on the journey to begin with.

Essential Insight into the Story of Writing
"One of the most famous libraries of the ancient world was at Alexandria in Egypt. Scholars and scientists came from all over the Greek-speaking world to study there and to add to the library's collections by translating and copying more tests. At one tiome it is said to have more than 400,000 works on papyrus rolls stored on shelves, each with a label to identify it."

The DK books offer a beautiful way to learn about the world. In this selection you will find photographs of clay tablets, pens and ink and even printing presses.

Bravisimo!!
This book is an excellent introduction to the opera for beginners. The strange art where people die while singing ten minutes becomes touching and interesting after reading this book.

An informative, witty and enjoyable tour of a complex art.
Opera may be the most ambitious performing art form ever developed, but Scherer is undaunted: whether you know nothing or a lot, he's an engaging guide, reminding, reinforcing and opening the doors to greater appreciation. Every art, including dance, film, painting, poetry and fiction, should be so lucky.

A Calculus book that made me fall for Calculus
I have always wanted to gain a degree of mastery over the subject of Calculus, knowing the power and elegance of this topic of mathematics. I had searched in vain for a text that made the subject matter comprehensible, fearing no such beast existed. I stumbled onto this book virtually by accident and to my great surprise and delight, I found the text easy to read, with the subject material presented in a sequential manner that aided complete understanding. At no stage of the text did I suffer the pangs of not knowing where some pertinent information had arisen. Further, many of the examples in the book had a practical application of Calculus to the real world, making the subject even more rewarding to learn. In short, this Calculus Book has made the Calculus a pleasure to learn. My enduring and hearthelt thanks to MR. HOFFMANN and MR BRADLEY for their wonderful gift to me

Very useful
For those who need to see this course in college, this is the book to have. It's very explicit, and offers a very useful Algebra review at the end; extremely important to refresh our memory from highschool. Highly recommended!!
