It's Time to Reconsider the Eucharist
The author writes this book in a response to a need for a single volume that brings together historical, theological, and practical matters from a variety of sources. Much of the material available on this subject is written in a technical style that is not easily read or understood by the lay person. The author also seeks to suggest new ways of understanding and conducting the Eucharist. He identifies two audiences for his book. The first audience is lay people in the local church. A second audience is identified as seminarians and church professionals. The author writes from a Wesleyan/Methodist background, but seeks to produce a work that is ecumenical in scope. Stookey wants to clear up misconceptions about the Eucharist and to help the reader develop a historical and theological understanding that will affect the way the Eucharist is observed and shared in our churches. Stookey has succeeded in his objectives. I found the book to be well laid out, fairly easy to read, and quite engaging. Especially helpful was the section about how to preach on the Eucharist, and an emphasis that the observance of the Eucharist is not a solemn occasion, but a celebrative one! This book belongs in every pastor's library.

Recession Relevant 2002
To quote Janet Lowe's description of Graham's "Intelligent Investor" "This book was written for the people on Main Street rather than those on Wall Street". Laurence Sloan's insight into the future is astounding. He makes assumptions based on sound economic theory in the midst of the Great Depression and most of what he predicts actually comes true. I read it in 3 sittings and it was a refreshing change from the dry financial titles that I have read recently. Short on algebra, long on theory but a worthwhile read.

Fire in the Forest: A Cycle of Growth and Renewal
Published in Hardcover by Marcel Dekker (September, 1994)
Authors: Laurence Pringle and Bob Marstall
Amazon base price: $16.00
Average review score:

Good book about how fire affects forests.
We are planning a trip to Yellowstone and this book has gotten me excited to see the different kinds of forests that exist throughout the park. Not only does the book cover how fire affects forests, but how time affects forests -- by looking at the types of growth in a forest you can tell how old it is (i.e. how long it's been since the last major fire). Fascinating. The only slight critique I have is that I wish the book were longer -- it's a good length for upper elementary and middle school children, but high schoolers and adults will want more.

Great photos and interesting writing
I found this book at the Indianapolis Institute of Arts. The author does a fine job of surveying Gehry's career and accomplishments. The reader is also offered some additional GENERAL information on various influencing architects, and architectual syles and/or movements. While the text is concise, it is truly unpretentious. The photographs are splendid, especially those showing his masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. While this is not a full treatise on the works and influence of Gehry's career, it is exactly as the title suggests: it offers the essentials of Gehry's artistry and mastery.

A valuable glimpse at the Reagan's first term
This book is a gem of political writing. It is, of course, dated as it only covers the opening moves of the Reagan White House. Barrett gives the reader a series of journalistic snap shots of Reagan as his career brings him from Dixon to Hollywood and then moves him from Sacremento to Washington. Insights into his philosophy and style prove to have stood the test of time, at least so far. Equally important are the chapters which deal with the various members of the presidents team. The now famous Troika of Meese, Deaver and Baker shine througout the text. Less well known figures shed much light on the mood and form of the revolution as it begins to unfold. It documents well the crises and triumphs of Reagan's first term, which are often overshadowed in later works by great events such as the end of the Cold War and the Iran-Contra Scandal. This fair and balanced look at the early Reganaughts gives the reader a feeling of what it was like to be in Washington during those first heady days of the so called Reagan Revolution. When Reagan was not yet an 'ism, Reaganomics was on everyone's lips and few in the West had ever heard of the name Mikhail Gorbachev.

Great! But Orson Welles is not among the artists here.
This is certainly a worthwhile set of tapes for anyone who is interested in or who enjoys listening to old-time radio programs. However, although it is listed among items featuring Orson Welles, those who may be purchasing it in the hope of hearing some of Welles's classic radio dramatizations need to know that Welles is NOT on these tapes.

The Green Studies Reader: From Romanticism to Ecocriticism
Published in Unknown Binding by Routledge (E) (November, 2000)
Authors: Laurence Coupe and Jonathan Bate
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Key readings on 'nature' and 'culture'
This is a very welcome reader in 'green' cultural studies that includes but goes well beyond 'ecocriticism', as narrowly confined to a subdiscipline of English literature. Its stated aim is 'to stimulate debate about the 'nature' of criticism and to give green studies some much-needed bearings'(Preface).

The readings included are wide ranging, and are organised in three loosely chronological sections: Green Tradition, Green Theory and Green Reading. They have been chosen to help the reader come to terms with the age-old relationship between 'nature' and 'culture', which Jonathan Bate claims in his Foreword to be 'the key intellectual problem of the twentieth century'.

Ecocriticism is better established in the United States than in Britain. This has resulted in two related problems. First, texts on ecocriticism have up to now tended to focus on American literature and theory. Second, North Atlantic ecocriticism has not engaged with (non-English) European thought as thoroughly as it might. The Green Studies Reader goes some way towards remedying these 'faults'. While it is still firmly focussed on Anglo-American literature, (and film), it includes significant readings from key French and German thinkers.

This book is an important, even crucial, read for anyone interested in the ways in which planetary life might at last take 'its rightful place at the centre of that discipline which we might still call, though with appropriate hesitation, the humanities' (Introduction).

An easy to understand book strictly for beginners
This book contains simple how to's for the bass guitar and is inteneded for beginners, even intermediate players can benefit with this book since it offers reinforcements of bass fundamentals. Decent illustrations set this book back a little bit, but the simple and helpful exercises, and easy to understand text more than makes up for that.
