not a bad text
The text could have expanded on some topics. I recommend the Voet and Voet text. Had to purchase this text because few of its authors were from the university I attend.

Not as good as the first two volumes
This is the third volume of a three-volume collection of musical criticism by one of the most renowned English-language authors of the last 120 years. Unfortunately, he was losing his powers in the period which this volume covers, and it's not nearly as good as the first two. Might be worth having for the reprint of his short book on Wagner's Ring

The book was full of facts, but kind of set and plain.
I thought that the book was very helpful on giving the reader facts of smoking, the harm it can do to you, and what additives and ingredients that there are in a cigarette. The history of the tobacco nation seemed to be a long one with many good and bad times for the public and niccotine companies. Some specific things that I thought was good, was the way the public helped ourselves become aware of the harm and side affects smoking can do to you. The way the public put health warnings on smoking ads, putting up advertisements that was really disgusting but true, i.e. an unborn child smoking, symbolizing how smoking when pregnant can harm the child, and etc.

Study guides may not also be "guiding"
Samuelson's study guide is quite useful only if you have studied both macro and microeconomics. Be sure to understand that this study guide's purpose is to refresh and test your knowledge of the realm of economics on the macro AND micro level. Do not use this study guide to help you on either of the two courses alone. I would recommend this study guide for those students taking courses that combine both macro and micro into a single survey course or for those students who have completed both principles to macro and micro and are now attempting to tackle these courses on the intermediate level. Overall, the study guide comes with an answer key and sufficient coverage of the concentration - not bad. A general warning - don't but this unless you REALLY think you're going to use it - don't think it's going to make you a better student- keep in mind the "better"student must already exist in order for this study guide to be put into actual use. You'll probably be just as well off studying out of your textbook and with friends.

Temptation Resisted
I was very tempted to buy this book on a recent visit to Istanbul. I did not because I consider myself a novice birdwatcher. As such, I am accustomed to the layout and information contained in Audobon or Peterson guides. Therefore, this book did not have enough pictures and identification tips for my particular needs.

Based on what I absorbed while trying to decide whether or not to succumb to temptation, this book is probably useful to a more experienced birder. The focus of the information is on where the birds can be found. The size was convenient. The maps were clear, although I have no personal information as to their accuracy. I had not previously encountered a bird book with black and white line drawings of birds and found that curious. The colored illustrations were attractive but too limited for my needs.

If you are a more experienced birder with a particular interest in this region, this book would be very useful in planning a birding trip and as a companion to a field guide. I recommend purchasing the book before travelling to Turkey. I found the book in two of the English language bookstores in Istanbul and it was fairly expensive.

Good primer for womens' studies
This book is divided into parts 1 to 5. If this is the first time you have picked up a work describing this era from the women's aspect then read, 1. Women in History, 2. Marriage, Sex and the Family, 3. Women's Material Worlds. If not, then pass on to Part. 4 describing women's mental worlds which will then be fresh to you. A sample quote, "it was put about that women who had preached, or heard a woman preaching, gave birth to monsters." Something of a self-fulfilling prophesy there, depending on your point of view. The descriptions of Quakers and other Non-Conformist activity are crisp, accurate and interesting and range as far as a discussion of witch-craft, which usually slides off the scale of beliefs. Part 5 is a speedy skate around all those areas which require far deeper study to applaud, or otherwise, the conclusions Laurence has drawn here. It spans the legal aspects of femme coverte, property ownership, marriage settlements and wills in a workwomanlike way. The final chapters, Womens and Men's Worlds and Women and Crime hold no surprises, but the latter is cogent although based on somewhat limited sources. An ideal introductory book for "Women's Studies" suitable for first year university students.

Lawrence Brahm Mixed Review
I am nearly finished reading Zhu Rongji & the Transformation of Modern China and must say I have mixed reactions. The book is interesting for its chronology of the major events and milestones in China's recent history leading up to entry into WTO. The book provides a lot of interesting Chinese for my crib notes to use in meetings with Chinese party and private officials in Beijing and Shanghai -- which is a testament of the author's knowledge of the terrain and people. I do not recall any critical reference of Zhu or Zhu policy so I must conclude that to a certain extent Mr Brahm's writing is not unbiased and written with dual - self serving purpose. There is also little documentation and no formal references listed anywhere.

How to make a fortune on the information superhighway : everyone's guerrilla guide to marketing on the Internet and other on-line services

Harmful advice
This advice is terrible. It is worse than useless. Your Internet account cancelled will certainly be canceled if you tried to follow their instructions. There are legitimate methods of conducting business on the Internet. Business-2-business sites and e-commerce sites are good examples of this. But the "send unsolicited bulk emails" and "spam thousands of Usenet newsgroups" strategies that this book teaches are not only ineffective (it has been estimated that over 95% of spammers lose money in the long run), but unethical. UCE and spam take advantage of the Tragedy of the Commons: UCE and spam are not free-speech issues. Siegel and Canter should be ashamed.

Defensive and self-serving.
Written by the original King and Queen of Spam, one would expect this book to be the original book on marketing on the internet. Not so. Most of it is either a description of how they executed their infamous Usenet bombing runs, or discussion of marketing ideas that they themselves have never tried. For example, they discuss selling sex and porn on the net at length, but they have never been in that business. Additionally, Canter and Siegel feel that advertising on the Internet should be as natural and expected as in other media such as TV and radio but they forget that those media are funded by the advertisers, not by the consumers as is the case with the internet. They discount those who dislike and flame spammers as a lunatic minority despite the volume of hate mail they themselves received, and they don't consider the silent majority who will be just offended enough to make a point of avoiding them should the need for their kind of services arise. Overall, I'd rate this book as an excellent source of ideas *not* to try if you're going into business online. It probably has more value to net.sociologists as a sort of evil relic than to e.business types.

You can't beat it...
This book is a "must have." Lots of big business types, especially sysops and network administrators, will tell you that you'll lose your internet account and piss people off if you follow the book's instructions. That may be. But the internet is changing and people are making a lot of money on it right now whether the nay-sayers like it or not. There's no stopping it; you may as well join in!

Misleading and Inaccurate
The advice that Siegel and Canter dispense in this book is worse than useless. It will almost certainly get your Internet account cancelled if you tried to follow their instructions. There is such a thing as legitimate methods of conducting business on the Internet. Siegel is a most excellent spammer
Anyone who believes that Ms. Siegel's book is the
solution for an Internet marketing strategy has
not learned the lessons of history. She made her
fortune offering what are already freely available
services to internationals desiring temporary USA
visas. And she did it on the basis of nothing more
than spam.

Can you honestly think that you will have the same
results she has had by employing the same technique?
Are you prepared to have your plug pulled by a
number of service providers, and to be despised by
Internet-savvy users all over the world? If the
answer to these questions is yes, then by all means
read her book -- but don't try doing business with me.

If you would rather use the Internet for the long term
-- and you should because it'll be here -- then find a
way to make it a part (not the whole, not even the
biggest part) of an overall business strategy that
puts customers and potential customers first.

A great book full of useful hints and tips
First of all, this book works! It is a concept based book which will take it's reader to a high income rate. The book explains the ways in which to sucessfully market a product and many many other ways to build up your bank balance. If you want to make lots of money on the internet then you should buy this book.

Quantitative Modeling of Derivative Securities: From Theory To Practice

Avellaneda's worse performance
This is a surprisingly sloppy book written by a known academic in the financial engineering world. That is Marco Avellaneda. At first sight, this book is a good idea. It is suppose to bridge the gap between literature that are too simplified for quants and the high level books that are too mathematically rigorous for pratitioners. However this book is presented in such a sloopy manner that any profit driven company would sack these two authors. There are typo mistakes in almost every page and some fundamental errors. There are numerical examples there are completely wrong. On top of that, who writes a quant book without giving any exercises. The authors should comprehend that mistakes in quantitative books can be very misleading to the reader especially if the reader is trying to learn. If you don't have a Ph.D. in Math, don't read this book. It might do more harm than good.

Very good treatment of mathematical finance minus the typos
This book is no doubt written in haste and typos are galore. I have read this book in its entirety and I highly recommend it. Concepts well covered include Binomial trees, Brownian motion and stochastic calculus, APT, HJM formulation, etc. It is a great stepping stone to get to Duffy's book. A second edition would be a great idea.

A useful introduction to modeling of derivatives
This book is written by the two well-known applied mathematicians - Marco Avellaneda of the Courant Institute and Peter Laurence of the University of Rome. Avellaneda has been involved in financial mathematics for a number of years, while Laurence's interest in this subject is more recent. The book can serve as a useful introduction to the quantitative analysis in financial markets. As such, it covers a lot of ground stretching from an exposition of the standard Black-Scholes theory to an interesting description of the HJM framework. In addition to the standard material, it contains several original results developed by the authors themselves. The first printing had so many typos that its study was difficult for a novice. Most of these typos had been corrected in the second printing. In its present form, the book can be strongly recommended to a general reader with interest in the mathematical finance.
