John A. Sutter in Hawaii and California 1838-1839
This book gives a new perspective on John Sutter. He has been remembered as a benevolent oasis to people of the Donner Party and the William Manly expedition. But this gives us an overview on how he acquired the resources that enabled him to build his fort and be so helpful to immigrants. It takes us to Hawaii where Sutter spent five months in Honolulu from 1838 to 1839. There he made business connections, particularily creditors. When he worked a complicated chain of borrowing from one to pay the other, he was utilizing the connections he had made during his stay in Honolulu, a world trading center. It turned out to be a house of cards for him when one of his creditors suddenly decided to declare himself insolvent and to cash in his chips so to speak. Two other creditors bailed Sutter out because of his potential as a trading partner and an influential foothold in the rich and promising Sacramento valley. I also enjoyed the brief historical account of Hawaii that the author gives. As a child I was facinated to read about King Kamehamea and Queen Lili'uokalani. Kamehamea seemed like a mythical figure like a character from Homer's Odyssey. Now I have a reference that renders me a great perspective on the history of these facinating Islands in a brief but broad spectrum approach. This book is really a must for people interested in the 19th century western hemisphere and our roots therein. ,

Just the facts
Written concisely, this is the interesting story of John C. Fremont, an amazing explorer, controversial soldier, and a failure as a Civil War general and a businessman. Black and white illustrations, photographs, and maps add to the book's visual appeal. My fourth grade son really enjoyed reading about Fremont's adventures.

Long John Daly
This book is about one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour. This book deals with his personal life and professional Golf. As a fan I am glad John has sought treatment for his many problems. As they say in life "You learn as you go" John has certainly learned his lessons in life unsuccessful marraige and drinking problems. This is a must have book for Golf fans and John Daly fans.

Great piano solos
This book has contains some excellent piano pieces. The contents are as follows: "Journey To The Island," "Theme From 'Jurassic Park'," "My Friend, The Brachiosaurus," "Remembering Petticoat Lane," "A Tree For My Bed," and "Welcome To Jurassic Park."

Three pieces use the music from the main theme: "Journey To The Island," "Theme From 'Jurassic Park'," and "Welcome To Jurassic Park." Incidentally, I found these three to be the most rewarding to play on the piano. "Journey To the Island" is my personal favorite and is magical to play.

I give this book four stars because I know it could have been much better. There's only 32 pages here, and of those pages only 25 of those are sheet music. The front of the book has photos from the movie which are superfluous. I have no idea why publishers put movie photos in soundtrack music books. I think people who buy such books are probably familiar enough already with the movie. The extra space could have been used for more music pieces instead. On the "Jurassic Park" soundtrack, 16 tracks are included. This book only has 6 of those in sheet music form, and generally speaking those 6 are the more mellow of the songs. I think it would have been interesting to include some action pieces like "The Raptor Attack."

The pieces are at least intermediate in the level of difficulty, but they are very rewarding to play on the piano (I will give the publisher some kudos for releasing this as a piano solo edition). I highly recommend this book for piano players who like the "Jurassic Park" theme music.

Has some good ideas
Published in 1996, this 160 page volume centers on sharpening your attacking instincts, offers practical tips on how to conduct King-Hunts, surveys on how attacking technique has developed and offers some great games from Morphy, Fischer, Tal and Kasparov to name a few. This book is an updated version of a 1970 release with 12 of the 55 games offered coming after 1970. The games range from the years 1844 to 1995. It's bascially a 3 star book (solid) but i give it an extra star for the historical games it includes.

Aristophanes has Cleon replaced by a sausage seller . . .
"The Knights," produced in 424 B.C., is clearly an all-out attack on Cleon, the leader of Athens after the death of Pericles. As related by Thucydides, earlier that year Cleon had induced the Spartans to propose peace. Consequently, Aristophanes opens the comedy with two slaves of the crotchety old Demos ("the people of Athens") dressed up to resemble the generals Demosthenes and Nicias. The two slaves complain about how everyone is picking on Paphlagon, a leather seller who is the favorite of Demos and clearly intended to be Cleon. The oracles tell that Paphlagon is going to be replaced by a sausage seller named Agoracritus.

"The Knights" is a second-tier comedy by Aristophanes because it is devoted entirely to making fun of Cleon. Consequently, Aristophanes makes his point early on and by the time Agoracritus the sausage seller beats Cleon at this own game, the comic dramatist is beating a dead horse all the way into the ground. This comedy always struck me as being like a SNL skit that lasts the entire show. In the end Demos, rejuvenated by being stewed in a plot by Agoracritus, takes control and declares he will abolish all innovations and restore the old traditions.

The legend is that the mask makers of Athens, fearing reprisals from Cleon, refused to make a mask of the Athenian leader and that Aristophanes played the part himself. Of course, Cleon would have been in the audience watching the play at the festival that year, but unlike what happened when Socrates stood throughout the production of "The Clouds," we know nothing of Cleon's response aside from the fact that Aristophanes survived to write more comedies.

wonderful book
Like pretty much all of Dr. Barclay's books, the Letter to the Hebrews makes the Bible verses that are so difficult to comprehend easy to understand and beautiful. His Bible studies are good whether you're reading the Bible for the first time or whether you're studying it in depth. He gives you a lot of historical background which really helps. I did find the section about priesthood (Hebrews chapter 7) slightly tedious, but that's my only complaint. It's definitely a worth while read.

Good book on the Good Book
Barclay's book on The Letters to the Philippians, Colossians and Thessalonians is an excellent analysis of these books of the Bible.

Barclay provides an introduction to each book before proceeding to a line-by-line, verse-by-verse discussion of the text and its meaning.

The author has a very good understanding of the history and backround of these books and shows detailed knowledge of the language used by Paul. His commentary sheds light on the reasons for Paul's letters and clearly explains the specific guidance Paul was offering to these followers.

Finally, I liked the quotes and short stories Barclay tossed in with his analysis. It's a good book for Bible study. It's easy to read a little bit each day. It's also easy to spend a great deal of time reflecting on the most meaningful passages.

The best book on evidence
My professor suggested this book and deemed it the "Bible on Evidence". I bought it and it is. A great book that will clear up many of your questions. If you don't understand what your law professor is saying, this book will make it clearer.
