The Story of Williams Electric Trains
Published in Hardcover by Greenberg Pub. Co. (December, 1989)
Author: John Hubbard
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $108.06
Average review score:

A Fine Historical Reference
I read this book when it was first published in 1987, when Greenberg Publishing Company was well known for its books on the history and operation of toy electric trains in the United States and before its acquisition by Kalmbach Publishing, known for its high quality magazines such as Model Railroader, Classic Toy Trains, and Trains. The book provided an informative, detailed history of Williams Electric Trains, known earlier as Williams Reproductions, Ltd., established in 1971 to make reproductions of old, collectible toy trains which were no longer easy to come by.

The book, of course, is no longer a complete history of Williams Electric Trains, for it predates the company's more recent history as a marketer of modern O-gauge electric trains (i.e., models in a scale of 1:48 operating on 3-rail track and being compatible with Lionel, K-Line, MTH, Weaver, and similar brands). However, the book may now be more significant than ever, for it provides the historical background not only for the Williams Electric Trains company but also for the MTH Electric Trains company, one of the largest and most successful marketers of toy electric trains in the United States today, a formidable competitor of the venerable Lionel company.

You see, one of Jerry Williams' earliest employees was a high school student named Mike Wolf. Employment at Williams Reproductions, Ltd. in the early 1970's gave Wolf his start in the toy electric train business, and several pages of this book deal with Wolf and another youthful employee, Andy Edleman. Wolf went on to found Mike's Train House, which has evolved into MTH Electric Trains. And Edleman? He is now the Vice President - Marketing at MTH Electric Trains.

Even though it is now 13 years old, The Story of Williams Electric Trains is required reading as "Chapter 1" in the history of not one but two of today's successful toy train marketers in the U.S. Any student of the domestic toy market, of the history of modern-day toys, of electric trains in general, or of the Williams or MTH electric train companies should have this book in his library. Married with the brand new book A Toy Train Story, the Remarkable History of M.T.H. Electric Trains, Hubbard's work on Williams will give a fascinating picture into the background of an intriguing and exciting hobby that has enthralled children and adults of all ages for over a century.

Don't Pay Attention to What Grades This Book Is For!
O.K. I'll begin by confessing that I am a middle school teacher who participated in one of the NSF funded summer Institutes for Chemical Education. So, I already had the pleasure of working with and learning from two of the authors, Jerry and Mickey Sarquis. I would not have expected anything less than a 5-star professional resource from them. This book is a gem. It offers 42 activities, evenly distributed among K-3, 4-6, and 7-9. However, those categories meant little to my students or me. We loved them all. Of course, I might have changed an activity title like "Twirly Whirly Milk" to something that was more "8th gradish" and added a question or two to the accompanying handout, but what is important is that my students enjoyed the activities and thought about science as a result of doing them.

The activities all include the following well developed sections: key science topics, key process skills, time required, materials - for getting ready - for introducing the activity - for the procedure - for variations and extensions, safety and disposal, getting ready, introducing the activity, procedure, variations and extensions, explanation, assessment options, cross-curricular integration, and some of the activities also have hand-out masters. (I almost rated the book only 4 stars because I would have liked handouts for each activity, but the assessment sectionss offer the teacher many creative options. So, you'll have to think a little. What else is new?)

Thermopylai: Myth and Reality in 480 BC
Published in Paperback by Ares Pub (1996)
Authors: G. J. Szemler, William J. Cherf, John C. Kraft, and George J. Szemler
Amazon base price: $25.00

Understanding Thermopylai
The authors, a historian of the ancient world, a topographer and a geologist, finally solve the dilemma that for centuries perplexed scholars: the grand strategy and tactics connected with the battle at Thermopylai in 480 B.C., and the logistical and communication problems confronting defenders and invaders alike. They point out that after the Persians' success at Thermopylai, the Persian army did not use a coastal route, or any of the small passes over the Kallidromos mountains, but a road system directly to the south between the Oite and Kallidromos mountains, that they designate as the Great Isthmus Corridor Route, unknown to researchers until the authors' discovery.
The authors present geological and topographical evidence that negates all speculations of earlier researchers, who try to force the text of Herodotus, the earliest written source, into their historical account.
They use reports of early travelers, 19th and 20th century English and French authors, and, most importantly, the topographical articles in the bible of ancient historians, Pauly's RE.
The authors emphasize that their investigation was a salvage operation fighting for time against the encroaching topographical changes by a newly built cement factory, and the preparation for expanding the old, WWI British road into a major superhighway.
They identify ancient Trachis, and the passes that led from the Malian Gulf to the Gulf of Itea. They also gave a clear picture of the unique status of the Phokian ethnos in Central Greece, the Phokians' anti-Persian attitude, and their split allegiance during the period of Theban ascendancy.
Most importantly, they have shown that the strategy and tactics at Thermopylai were but a ruse to secure the main road system into Greece, as seen in the route the Persians took after the battle.
The footnotes are full and complete, a necessity in face of opposing views that are occasionally strident, and border on academic hybris.

Three Works: A Dream of John Ball; The Pilgrims of Hope; News from Nowhere

News From Nowhere is one of the most insightful novels ever!
Although ancient by most people's terms, this is probably among the most wonderfully written novels ever to be produced. News From Nowhere gives insights into how the people of the late 19th century thought the future was going to turn out like, and is surprising the number of details which are relatively accurate. The novel itself deals with a year sometime after 2003 and, as can be expected, many details are now impossible, but others are likely. The story is also great and very believeable on the whole. The characters are indepth and all add some colour to the book. Basicaly, reading this book, it is fascinating to compare the people, society and technolodgy imagined to our own, and when you do this you see just how little socially we have changed from the 1800s, but how are technolodgy has progressed at a phenomenal rate. An increddibly fascinating book, it is a must read for everyone.

Updated Transplantation Drug Manual!
This book provies the reader with a listing of drugs commonly used in patients who have undergone solid organ transplantation, including drugs used for immunosuppression and those used to minimize post-transplant complications. The most attractive feature in this manual is the initial overview of the agents that will be covered in each chapter. After the overview, a summarized version of each drug's monograph is presented, which includes information on broand names, manufacturers, mechanism of actin, indications, formulation and dosing.

It is not only a useful manual for physicians and medical residents, but for clinical and hospital pharmacists, as it provides some product-related information.
