David Gilhooly
Published in Hardcover by John Natsoulas Gallery (January, 1994)
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

This lavishly illustrated biography of David Gilhooly follows his career from his student years, doing ceramic sculpture at the University of California-Davis where "Nut Art," later called "funk," emerged in the 1960's, through to the early 1990's, when he established his own press and print studio. Among the illustrations are works by artists with whom Gilhooly has been associated, including Robert Arneson and Wayne Theibaud.

Delaware, Maryland & the District of Columbia Atlas of Historical County Boundaries (Serial)
Published in Hardcover by Charles Scribners Sons/Reference (September, 1996)
Amazon base price: $135.00
Average review score:

If you're interested in this sort of thing as I am this book could be of great value however the price is unreal. I have a CD that does much the same for the entire country at a third the price of one state however this book is MUCH more accurate and shows county boundaries that only occured for as little as three days. The CD is also easier to use. That said I'll likely ask for the book as one of those Christmas presents I wouldn't buy for myself.

Devil Boats: The Pt War Against Japan
Published in Hardcover by Presidio Pr (January, 1987)
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

Historian William Breuer has produced a popular, anecdotal history of the PT Boat in WWII. It's a good, enjoyable read that gives the reader a broad overview of what the boats did and what kind of people manned them. If you are interested in PT Boats, this is an excellent place to start, but keep in mind you are skimming the surface.
Highly recommended as a companion book is Victor Chun's pictorial history of American PT Boats in WWII.
For more detailed PT stories, try Dick Keresey's "PT-105" or track down a copy of "At Close Quarters."

This book--if you can find a copy--gets to the point quickly and clearly. Helps you judge IF you or someone else is alcoholic and what to do about it and why. Definitely a good read--especially if you are just starting your research.

Drunkard's Progress: Narratives of Addiction, Despair, and Recovery
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (February, 1999)
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Crowley is not really the author of this book but the editor. _Drunkard's Progress_ is Crowley's collection of a genre of prose, the "confessions" of the alcoholic. Crowley's contextualizing essay does a nice job connecting the told-story, or the ritual of recounting alcoholic experiences with the first groups, like the Washington group, who employed this as a tactic toward achieving sobriety. Crowley also makes connections with the similar ritual within modern day recovery groups. As a contemporary literature scholar, I found Crowley's previous text, _The White Logic: Alcohol and Gender in Modernist Fiction_ to be more interesting, largely becuase it offers a literary interpretation and criticism of a variety of novels rather than being a collection of brief narratives like this book. However, for the reader and scholar interested in the foundation of the drunk-narrative-as-ritual-therapy model, Crowley's collection will be interesting reading.

Essays in Radical Empiricism :
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1976)
Amazon base price: $100.00
Average review score:

For the serious James scholar, this book is indispensible. For those of you who are not too familiar with Jame's ideas and their background, this book is probably too much - and too boring at that. Even for scholars of epistemology, this book can be rather frustrating. Originally written for his grad students at Harvard, the book lacks much in the way of context, and it is completely theoretical. Furthermore, it is filled with many untranslated passages, from German to Latin. I gave the book four stars because it could use some editing. This is the modern era: Latin is dead - even for the most serious philosopher - and German is no longer the language of Philosophy. The passages should be translated, and some of the more abstract essays should come with introductions. That said, the book is still a valuable contribution to empirical epistemology, laying out James of view of "radical empiricism" - where subjects and objects collide. Indeed, the book itself is a pure experience!

The Essential Galbraith
Published in Unknown Binding by Mariner Books (E) (October, 2001)
Amazon base price: $16.00
Average review score:

Perhaps Galraith's greatest appeal as an economist is the disdain he holds his own profession in. He is a merciless critic of thoughtlessness, ignorance, and the status-quo--and he's quite fun to read.
Because this is an anthology of his life's work, themes are occassionally repeated. But you don't need to know much economics, and the writings are current.

An Everyday Modernism: The Houses of William Wurster

This book brings back the many forgotten works of William Wurster. It balances the architect's story and illustrations well. I recommend this book to architecture enthusiasts who want to reach beyond mainstream architecture.
