Critical Introduction to Core Beats
Published over twenty years ago, Naked Angels still holds up as a thorough critical study of the works of Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Kerouac. The first section deals mainly in biography, but it seeks to explain why each of the writers explored certain topics and how their experiences shaped their styles. However, if you have studied these three in a biographical sense, the information presented here will not be new to you.

The second section covers the works of the three writers. While there is certainly a wealth of sources that give critical insights into Beat writing, this section brings them together into an often detailed, more often general study of Beat themes, styles, and voices. The Ginsberg section is particularly detailed in its analysis of Ginsberg's long lines and mysticism. Though Kerouac and Burroughs receive their share of treatment, the Burroughs section lacks the further illumination provided by Burroughs over the last twenty years of his life. And the Kerouac section hits only the high points, simply because it would be too difficult to cover every aspect of this prolific writer's work in a mere 70 pages.

This book is a solid overview of the core Beats and their seminal works. Its age shows at times, but it's worth a read as a well-written and well-thought treatment of Beat literature.

An Insight Into the Beats
Tytell gives an excellent insight into the founding members of the Beat movement. He shows the backgrounds and the motivations of one of the most innovative literary movements in the 20th century. I would strongly recomend this for anyone , especially if they are just starting to explore this group of writers.

Pocket Companion as a good review, esp. before you sleep!!
This pocket companion serves as a concise overview of the most important facts & concepts from the parent textbook (Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology). However, it does not contain all the details or some clinical relevances, that's why you have to go back to the parent textbok for furthur info.

Review of Pocket Guide for Guyton's Medical Physiology Text
Good figures. Text is easy to read. Guyton's text is especially good in explaining cardiovascular material. It complements the larger text well, and is recommended as a good, shorter version of the main text.

The Postmodern Military: Armed Forces After the Cold War

A useful starting point.
This is a useful study of an important subject -- how military forces in developed countries are changing as a result of broader social and political change. The book draws on research by academics, professional military and others working as the 'Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society'. US academic Charles Moskos sets out the overall thesis which is that social and political changes since the end of the cold war are fundamentally recasting how military forces recruit and train their people, operate in military contingencies and relate to their national governments. Moskos sets out eleven major areas which the other contributers use as a framework for reviewing specific military forces. Areas include such issues as preceived threats, public attitudes to the military, the dominant type of military profession in a force, the role of women and civilian employees and so on.

This 'eleven-point framework is both a strength and a weakness. While it enables some useful points of comparision between different national forces, it forces the individual country studies into a rigid structure where areas of difference are underplayed and too much attention is afforded to issues that may not be important to individual countries.

Overall, the book succeeds in showing that armed forces are indeed changing into organisations quite different from their cold war predecessors. But many broader (and more important) issues are not addressed: is this trend a good or bad thing? Are forces changing too slowly or too quickly? How should military forces train their leaders to handle these changes? And most important, what impact does this have on the capacities of countries to defend their national interests? While 'The Postmodern Military' usefully sets out the foundations for this important debate, it does not attempt to provide any of the answers to these critical broader questions.

Postmodern Military
Definitely interesting book. In this book Moskos outlines his paradigm for the postmodern military along the lines of 5 organizational changes and a number of emerging trends for the military. The book is written from a sociological perspective and examines the emergence of these postmodern trends in different militaries around the world. This is definitely an insightful and fascinating book and so is its examination of other nations. Definitely a read for military sociologists and officers alike.

New Shakespeare Teacher
As a first year English teacher, the thought of teaching Shakespeare intimidated me. Thankfully, a more experienced teacher loaned me a copy of this book. It was a lifesaver. It gave me a place from which to start. The helpful vocabulary lists and exercises, as well as the pre and post reading activities gave me terrific ideas to use in the classroom. I immediately ordered my own copy of this book. I will not hesitate to loan it to the newest English teacher down the hall.

Helpful to new Shakespeare teachers
If you are reasonably new to teaching Shakespeare this book has some good ideas to liven up your class.

It breaks down the activities into different acts, and it uses approaches that will appeal to different learning styles. There are a number of useful activities, worksheets, and practices quizzes that will get you up and rolling. When a new teacher is stuck, this is one of the books that I loan them.

For the experienced teacher, or someone who considers themself well-versed in Shakespeare, this book is a little elementary. It functions great in support, but lacks a little all on its own. I do however find it useful in conjunction with books like Shakespeare Set Free.

oddly compelling account of an anti-hero, a professor.
This book defies easy categorization. It's about the son of hardscrabble and proud farmers who goes to college just before WWI to learn modern farming techniques; instead he discovers he has a facility for book learning. He becomes a professor of literature but his life is an unhappy one: he marries a woman who turns out to be cold and unresponsive; he dotes on his daughter, but his wife alienates her and the daughter later becomes pregnant to get away, and becomes an alcoholic; he offends the college dean and his career is thwarted. His one chance at happiness is an affair that too is doomed. As grim as it is, the novel is oddly compelling; it's not kind to academic life. Stoner seems caught by his nature; the times; the place; a failure of will. He seems to have no real control of his destiny. Nor does his love of literature appear to give any direction to his life. His is a bleak, hard life. He's caught and can't - or won't -escape. "The unexamined life is not worth living."

Read it
The other review summed up the plot already. I just wanted to encourage others to read this book. It will make you take a look at your own life in the end and evaluate where exactly it is headed.

Spiritualicious
I actually first bought this book because I used to work for a guy named Bob Egan, and I thought this might be his brother or uncle or something. Bob was a really great boss---he was the COO, but I never found out what that means---and was always fun to be around. Sometimes I'd get to ride the elevator up to the 27th floor with him---that's where the office was---and even though it was a high speed elevator, we still had time to chat about how our mornings were going. Even though I was pretty much nobody at this company, he recognized me and would always chat, which I thought was so cool!

Anyway, after I worked there for a while Bob laid me off. I wasn't at work that day, so he had to do it over the phone. The thing was, I knew it was coming, so I wasn't surprised or hurt at all, but Bob---he was almost crying. He'd been doing this all day, and it was ripping him up, and you could just tell that he was really hurting him, and he didn't want to do that to anybody. But since he had to, he was trying to do it as nicely as possible, because it was a small company, and I'm guessing he would chat with everybody on the elevator, not just me.

Anyway, I figured that Bob cared so much about having to lay me off, that he must be a deeply spiritual person or something. I mean, I've been fired, layed off, broken up with, excommunicated, even restraining ordered and nobody's ever been that nice about it. Or that hurt. So I figured he must believe in God. Then I saw this book and figured that it might be one of his relatives and might help me get a window into Bob's soul, so I ordered it.

That was before I noticed that this guy spells his name Eagan, not Egan, like Bob. They're probably not related. The book's fine, though.

A traveler toward the dawn
This is an inspiring story of a man who lived his life as a high school teacher and Jesuit priest, often wondering whether he was making a difference in these young people's lives. To the reader it is abundantly clear he is making an enormous difference. A must read for anyone in or considering the teaching profession.

AQUIRED OF THE ANGELS
Unlike Leo Fender,Orville Gibson or C.F.Martin not much is generally known about these D'Angelico or D'Aquisto even though they are regarded as the greatest archtop builders in history. This book individually traces the lives and guitars of each man and features many rare and beautiful photographs.I found this book to be a fascinating insight into lives and work of two men who could only be described as the true masters of their craft.
