Insight from someone who's been there
I was expecting more of a how-to book when I bought this but was not at all disappointed. This funny and inspiring book gave some insight into the life, work and thoughts of one of our time's greatest actors. This is an good book for both fans of Shakespeare and of biographies.

The 4th edition is a good revision of a good Adulthood text.
Here we have a text that was already very good. This edition is a thorough review of major contemporary approaches to adult development. As an instructor I tend to favor a contextual lifespan approach and I found the treatment of contextual lifespan psychology to be more than adequate.

The chapter organization is good and the review questions at the end of each chapter are very useful in the course. My students are college juniors and seniors, and they find it easy to read.

I tend to avoid texts that don't do an adequate job of presenting research. This text has a sound introduction to current research in the field, and is an excellent choice for me.

Instructors looking for a good presentation of work on cognition in Adulthood will find the associated chapters useful as both a text and reference material to keep on hand for other courses, such as a 'Lifespan Psychology' course.

The new edition includes more on women, cross-cultural aging, personality and clinical aspects of aging, grandparenting, as well as much new material on aging and adaptation.

I would certainly recommend this book for any solid college level course on Adulthood.

Speaking of Shakespeare
John Gross, who edited _The Oxford Book of Aphorisms_ twenty years ago, has revived the idea behind the _Shakespeare Allusion Book_. That book compiled quotations about Shakespeare and his works in literature from 1591 to 1700. _After Shakespeare_ also reaches back into Shakespeare's era, and is arranged differently, but it still makes a good bookend for the earlier book.

The book is arranged into chapters of quotations about Shakespeare himself, his plays, his poetry, his influence in foreign lands, his appearance in novels, plays, movies, and adaptations of his works. There is considerable overlap, as many of these divisions are quite subjective. And the collection isn't all quips; there are lengthy excerpts of plays, novels, and essays. The quotes that appeal to me are the pithiest ones, however. King George III is recorded in a courtier's diary as complaining how rubbishy much of Shakespeare is, though one musn't say so. William Hazlitt contrasts the greatness of the Bard's work with the teeming insignificance of the critical writings that sprung up about him. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg marvels at how Shakespeare uses remarkable turns of phrase, which other writers would highlight, as throwaway lines.

But there's doubtless treasure in every chapter here for any Shakespeare lover. A fine, fun collection by a great, erudite anthologist.

War For the Wrong Reasons
This book should have been written pre-1960's so that the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations could have pulled out of Vietnam before history had a chance to repeat itself. The Spanish-American War and the Philippines War are two glowing examples of how politicians, businessmen, and other characters with hidden agendas can convince and cajole a nation into conducting a costly, unnecessary war. While reading this book I was continually amazed and ashamed of the actions of our military and goverment. Started by Randolph Hearst and a host of other jounalists the war cries were spurred on by the idea of "Manifest Destiny" and American colonialism. The sinking of the Maine supplied the final straw. Off went the soldiers with bands and parades to cheer them on. But in war, although people sometimes forget, men die and soon they did. A bumbling, criminally inept military, and a host of jungle diseases nearly wiped out these unfortunate troops. But wait, there is the "Heroic" Teddy Roosevelt to pull our stones out of the fire(What a crock we have been fed). The Philippines War, an extension and forgotten episode of the Spanish-American War, illustrates how sometimes a David can slay a Goliath. Fighting with outdated guns, knives, rocks, and sticks, An "uncivilized" army nearly overcame superior firepower to gain their long sought after freedom. Sound familiar? This was a prelude to Vietnam. The book was well written. Mr. Tebbel writes as if the events are taking place as you read, a sort of "you are there" feeling. He introduces a long cast of characters and includes background info on the more important people. The first part of the book deals with our war in Cuba which saw alot of coverage by jounalists. Some of the adventures of these newspaper men (Stephen Crane et. al.) would make a great movie. The second part deals with the Philippine War which is really why I bought the book. I was disapointed more pages were not devoted to this area(About 100 pages of a 300 page book for a time period that was 5 times longer). I was also disapointed that there were no maps. Not a one. I would recommend this to any reader with an interest in American history. Mr. Tebbel did not load the book down with military jargon so the casual reader will enjoy. I think this book is a good intro into a forgotten time period, for a more in depth military account other books have to be supplemented.

Good Practice
This review book , as do all of the Red books by Barron's, offers good practice for those who know the cirriculum and need to reinforce learning or who need to re-remember information after the AP Exam. However, explanations are week and those looking for a comprehensive book that will supplement slightly lacking knowlegde, should look elsewhere.

Birds in Brazil
Birds in Brazil is a big book, beautifully produced on quality paper. It is exhaustive but never exhausting on the topic of Brazilian birds . The color illustrations are beautiful, but unfortunately they are separate from the text about the birds. That is the book's only fault. The text is in smooth and enticing English, and where the same birds are to be found migrating to the United States, the information is quite comparable in completion and interest to the American field guides of Roger T. Peterson. That leads me to believe that the information about birds that we don't experience will be equally accurate. This book is captivating and well worth the price. It is a coffee-table style book that we will be proud to use and to display.

resistance theory enacted
Tassoni and Thelin (and the contributors) should be commended for their courage in challenging the dominant Horatio Algerian paradigm of celebrating only success and shoving to the margins the ways in which the rest of us blunder. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in a serious examination of resistance theory, where we have gone wrong and with some hints on where we might go right. Read this. If you don't, you're operating in the half-blind hero-narrative myth characteristics of academics.

Practical Book On Re-Engineering
I am currently doing an assignment on business process re-engineering. Many of the texts I have read so far have been thick on the theories and the benefits of re-engineering. As such, it comes across as cheap propagnada.

This book was different. In the first chapter, unlike other texts, it did not simply insists that TQM and other continuous process improvements are of the past and are not good enough for today's business environment. It explains how TQM has its place, if you are already a market leader. However, if you are way below, then TQM will not allow you to reach the apex before you are out of business. Re-engineering is the way.

This immediately pave the way for the rest of the book. The authors are balanced in their views and do not simply advertise the merits of re-engineering. They also cautioned throughout the text on the difficulties and pitfalls of re-engineering. I found their arguments more convincing than most authors.

The examples throughout the book were taken from different industries and prove a source for ideas for any re-engineering effort. The authors came across as extremely experienced in their work.

I would have given it five stars except the last chapter on the human aspect of re-engineering was rather dissapointing. I had expected to learn more from the authors about the very difficult human resource issues in re-engineering. Like most texts, the book mentioned difficulties and dished out textbook solutions without real solutions.

Still, it was one of the best re-engineering texts I have read and I believe it will help me greatly in my assignment.

I also believe that it is extremely useful for any managers or CEOs who want to re-engineer their business. Hammer's classic on re-engineering is not enough. You need to read this book for the practical advice and guiding framework if you are to have any chance for success in re-engineering.
