A first-rate superman novel
This is one of the first superman novels, and still, by all that is holy, simply the best. John Wainwright, born in England of mixed ancestry parentage has super abilities, a very slow maturation rate, extreme longevity, and amazing mental powers, among other things. He is to Homo sapiens as Homo sapiens is to Australopithecus. How does John cope in a world of what, to him, are hardly more than savage apes?

I can't tell of course; that would be unsporting. Prepare to say that your sense of what is moral may receive a long-overdue examination upon completion of this absolutely fascinating book about how a superior being would cope with early 20th century mores, technology, politics, and social convention. You will never forget the book, or John's answer to his plight.

Great book for those doing a serious rebuild on an old home
I bought the book while rebuilding the front porch and columns on my 1904 home. It *is* a lot easier to take something apart if you know how it was put together. And we needed to re-create mouldings and millwork that was destroyed by previous property owners. This book shows how the "old masters" built these old houses.

I'm an old house purist. And this book has nearly 200 pages of detailed blue prints and drawings, giving excellent detail on how old buildings were assembled. (primarily residences) It satisfied that craving [us] purists get to make something the way it was made 100 years ago.

The drawings enabled us to *truly* restore the beautiful details of our old home.

The book has very *very* few words, but lots and lots of blueprints and drawings.

Thought provoking.
This book was my first introduction to Tagore's works. The photography caught my attention enough to purchase the book. The poetry has touched me so much that I continue to read it over and over again.

straight from the doctor's plume
If you are a student of medicine (current, former, or hopeful), chances are that you will read at least one essay, address, or other writing of Sir William Osler. And, like all students past, you won't have a clue about what in the world the good doctor was saying. Dr. Osler was a peerless medical scholar, an erudite man of letters whose vast learning towered over that of his contemporaries and even moreso of the doctors of today. He was to medicine what Samuel Johnson was to lexicography. Unless you have degrees in philosophy, philology, literature, and classics (in addition to medicine), you will most likely be just as confused as you will be inspired by Dr. Osler's writing.

Thankfully, we have this new book from Duke University Press. With more annotations than a Harvard Law Review issue, this well-selected sample of Dr. Osler's most well-known papers and addresses presents an effective "translation" to satisfy all medical scholars who, though they seek to emulate Osler's compassion and skill, just can't understand all of his references. When I first read "Aequanimitas," I felt like an ignoramus. After reading it again in this present volume, I felt like an enlightened student eager to carry the Aesculapian staff into the new milennium (or something like that). I highly recommend this book to all medical students and physicians who seek a model of professional excellence in Dr. Osler, but who have heretofore scratched their heads when reading his papers. Revisit "A Way of Life." Read the footnotes. Then don your white coat, tend to your patients, and be proud of the great American medical tradition set forth by Dr. Osler so many years ago.

This is the one
I still have my incredibly beloved and beat-up copy from college days at Syracuse University; along with my "Complete Works of Shakespeare" (ed. Bevington)and Lumiansky's translation of "Canterbury Tales," this is one of those books I'll NEVER let go; if I had it with me on a desert island, I wouldn't mind being alone for a few years. It's got everything you could ask for from English lit., with excellent footnotes and introductory materials. A real treasure trove, and a must for anyone who really wants to start digging into the major Western writers -- yeah, those dead white guys; not so popular anymore -- just the ones who hold up the pillars of Western civilization!

A masterful achievement
"The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant" is a project begun in 1962 for the purpose of publishing all the known letters written by Ulysses S. Grant. Volume one was published in 1967 and there are now twenty-four volumes in the series. People who follow Grant's career are aware of the inestimable value of this project. The Papers contain all known correspondence written by Grant and letters received by him. The editing of the series is unparalleled and the volumes represent primary source material at its apex.

Those who believe Grant was a "drunkard" or a "butcher" should read his own words, which show Grant's humor, pathos and unique personality. Masterfully edited by John Y. Simon, these volumes are a "must have" for anyone with an interest in U.S. Grant as a general, a politician and as a man
