An invaluable guide for BREAST HEALTH as well as cancer
After my diagnosis, I waded through shelves of library books on alternative health/breast cancer/healing options in order to find some of the information in this succinct literate volume. This anthology by complementary and alternative medical experts addresses both scientific and spiritual approaches for living with breast cancer. A road map to help with diagnosis, surgery, and after care . Excellent website directory.

Reading this book is like having a wise friend by your side
This is a book is about integrative medicine, the emerging field of medicine that attempts to integrate the best therapies from both Western medicine and from non-conventional practices.

As Dr. Dean Ornish points out in his forword, the authors of the fifteen books chapters are striving to build bridges between the two worlds. They have all made profound contributions of their own to the medical community, and the expertise they share in this book may help provide patients with new hope and new choices. There is a great richness of material here, covering many perspectives:

Mainstream physicians such as famed breast cancer experts Susan Love and Debu Tripathy share their experiences and how they came to understand that they had to open their minds and look beyond the traditional boundaries of medicine. Bestselling authors Rachel Naomi Remen, John Kabat Zinn and Michael Lerner share their experiences with the mysterious powers of the mind and heart in the healing process. The role of diet is addressed in chapters by lead editor Mary Tagliaferri and by Larry Kushi. Chinese Medicine, Herbs, Supplements and other natural products are treated in several chapters. Controversial subjects such as distant healing are being explored, and the role of support groups in the well-being of cancer patients is analyzed. There is a portrait of a clinic that has become "a healing place for low-income women", and even tips on how to evaluate health information on the internet.

No one book can cover all the possible alternative and complementary therapies that are being used by breast cancer patients. But one would hope that these thoughtful essays will inspire many more physicians and alternative medicine practitioners to build bridges between their worlds and explore the possibilities of collaboration with open minds and hearts.

AN UNKNOWN JEWEL
WHEN I PURCHASED THIS BOOK, I BOUGHT IT MAINLY TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION OF ISAAC ASIMOV NOVELS AND ANTHOLOGIES. I WAS SURPRISED AND PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS ONE OF HIS BEST ANTHOLOGIES, AT LEAST IN MY MIND. THE STORIES SELECTED BY ASIMOV AND HIS TWO CO-EDITORS, MARTIN GREENBURGH AND CHARLES WAUGH, WERE RICH IN CHARACTERIZATION AND THE STORYLINES WERE SPELLBINDING, EVEN IF IT WAS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MANY OF THESE SITUATIONS WOULD OR COULD EVER OCCUR, BUT SUCH IS FANTASY! ANOTHER REASON I , ALONG WITH THOSE I LENT THIS BOOK TO, ENJOYED IT WAS THE FACT THAT MANY OF THE AUTHORS WHOSE WORKS WERE SELECTED WERE OBSCURE; NO ONE I KNEW HAD HEARD OF THEM. BUT THE MAIN REASON WAS THE FACT THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE STORIES DID NOT END ON A DOWN NOTE. THEY ALWAYS CONTAINED SORT OF HOPE OF SURVIVAL. I READ THIS BOOK TO PIECES, AND WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS OUT OF PRINT, AND NOT LIKELY TO BE RE-ISSUED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, IF YOU CAN FIND A COPY. SURE HOPE I CAN!

A few things to think about
The stories in this book range from not likely to frighteningly real--the ways that humans are capable of destroying themselves are depicted in accurate detail. A must read (again)...if only I could find a copy!

Simply excellent
It's amazing that so many results that you may have seen in more advanced books proven with more advanced techniques can also be proven with elementary methods. Some of the constructions are amazingly clever. Additionally, the authors take time to highlight the important results in elementary mathematics that are often used in more advanced areas without qualification.

One of a few
I've read the Russian original of this book. It is wonderful. I really enjoyed it, and often used the ideas I found there to solve other problems. Highly recommended, espesially for the high school students unterested in mathematics, but extremely interesting for anybody who likes math.

How will life end?
In this book, Asimov explores and analyzes the different ways the world, or civilzation, could end (the "catastrophes") and estimates the likelihood and time frame of each one of them. He goes all the way from the macro-catastrophes (heat death of the universe) to the micro-catastrophes (disease and political turmoil).
Very interesting book that brings science and a dose of reality into this consideration of the ultimate demise of mankind.

Will humanity overcome?
I was pleasantly surprised by this book(Dutch translation). I had never before read Asimov, and although I imagined him as a "serious" science-fiction author, the subject and title of this book made me uncertain about what to expect... Would it go down the popular road of feeding on people's fear? As it turns out, there was no need to worry. Asimov uses a nicely balanced approach to this mass-appeal theme to touch many fields of science and even culture. His message is not one of hysteria, but a message of hope. He presents himself as a true Homo Universalis of our time. Not in the sense that he pretends to know everything about anything, the sort of omni-knowledge that died after the Renaissance. But in the sense that he argues like a true World Citizen. A member of the human race instead of belonging to this or that nation/religion/sex/whatever. Of course, the subject of the book lends itself very well for this. So my impression is that Asimov found it more important to awake this feeling in the readers, than to write a sort of disaster-encyclopedia. The book is meant to assist us in becoming conscious about our position in space and time. About our relation to the past, the future and all the phenomenons in the Universe that completely outscale us in size, violence and duration. It is meant to make us feel tiny and insignificant in one way. But certainly also to unite us in a collective battle against the indifferent laws of nature and evolution.

I would recommended this book to anyone with a broad view on the world around us.

Crown of Feathers

each story as if captured within a crystal
Singer is a genius at creating tiny worlds, self-ecapsulated and yet part of a wider whole, as if subject to immutable laws of nature. You could argue that all of his characters are subtly different or that all of them are the same, so perfect is each world. There is also a unique mixture of realism and mysticism, the unseen world that operates behind appearences and yet is never fully explained. Simply brilliant.

Highly recommended.

Timeless Passions, Ancient Powers, New Forces
The late Isaac Bashevis Singer was a storyteller of genius, and "A Crown Of Feathers", is one of his finest collections of short stories, and because of its variety, serves as a superb intoduction to this master storyteller. This was my first Singer book. I picked it up at a garage sale some time back after reading a brief synopsis of the book and a quote stating that Isaac Bashevis Singer is the "greatest writer alive today" (this edition of the book is quite old, as Singer died in 1991).

The stories had two qualities which I found highly enjoyable. Firstly, Singer's combination of modern realism with Jewish folklore and fantasy is what first got me hooked, as I myself am Jewish and have a great interest in our religion, folklore and mythology. Secondly, the simple, direct style in which the stories were written. It was as if Singer himself was sitting in front of me telling a story. The book certainly did not disapoint and I finished it in a matter of days. It was such an enthralling read, that I raided most the second-hand book shops in the neighbourhood for Singer books. Now I have quite a large Singer collection of both novels and short stories - all of them works of art in their own right. This collection of twenty-four stories is varied - ghost stories, fables set in little Polish-Jewish villages and stories set in pre-World War II Warsaw and post-World War II New York. Although most of the stories have a distinctly Jewish flavour, many of the themes, including love, lust, politics, greed and family life are universal. Some of the tales end in twists, which can often leave you surprised or spooked, not that this is a bad thing, of course.

My favourite stories are as follows: "A Crown Of Feathers" is a phantasmagoric tale of a young woman losing and then trying to regain her faith. It's full of witchcraft, sorcery and violent imagery and it might disturb the average reader on first reading, but it is a very moving and rewarding read. "Property" is an interesting look into the political theory of anarchism. "A Quotation From Klopstock" is a love story with a twist. "The Magazine" is all about holding on to dreams and aspirations and following them. These are just a few of the great stories included in this book. It is a shame that "A Crown Of Feathers and Other Stories" is now probably out of print, but have a look around for it, it will be well worth the search. I highly recommend this book.

Daily Readings With St. Isaac of Syria (Daily Readings Series)

'A spring welling up from the depths'
Sixty clear, lucid meditations from a magnanimous theologian of the early church -- it is prose that reads like poetry, salutary and salvific. Meditations that could, in fact, be used as material for lectio divina. (We keep a bookmark on page 62, a page entitled "Do not despair.") This selection of readings is lucky enough to have an introduction by the great Anglican scholar A M Allchin.

A book that might prove similarly inspiring, from the Western tradition, is "Love Without Measure: Extracts from the Writings of St Bernard of Clairvaux," introduced and arranged by Paul Diemer, OCSO (Kalamazoo, Cistercian Publications, 1990, No. 127 in the Cistercian Studies series).

For all who trust that God is more than our petty projection
At a time when public Christendom is more a cause of chagrin than it is of delight, here is a timely corrective to "pious" habits of glib zeal and judgemental finger-pointing. Here is a selection from the saint's writings, the fruits of a holy life of prayer and compassion. "Someone who has tasted the truth is not contentious for truth. Someone who is considered among men to be zealous for truth has not yet learnt what truth is really like: once he has learnt it he will cease from zealousness on its behalf."

An Amazing Book - Please Read!
This book is a true gem. Small in size, but truly great in importance. After I read it, I gave my copy to my Dad and bought 5 more copies to give as gifts to my friends, especially new dads. I hope more people read this book, because the messages within are so important.

Beautifully inspiring
A wonderful reminder of what is important in life today. This book truly inspired me and made me reflect on my own life and analyze my own values. This would be a wonderful gift for a child, a parent, a friend, or yourself. I highly highly recommend it!

A book for life-application
Watchmann Nee takes the well-known yet elusive stories of these three men in Genesis and turns them into a palatable feast sampling the full Christian experience. Beginning with Abraham knowing God as the Father to the Israel fully matured and transformed, one is brought from the initial stage of God's calling through to the stage of maturity in the Christian life and as a functioning member of the corporate Body of Christ. His writing inspires thousands of Christians to endeavor to experience Christ in such a way, so that one grows deeper and deeper into God and with God.

A Christian life should be a balanced life:
Besides Watchman Nee's Normal Christian Life which is based on the book of Romans, this book gives us a vivid and living picture of a normal Christian life which is a balanced, overcoming, and God's ordained life, based on the story of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the book of Genesis. These three persons together characterize three main aspects of a normal Christian life - justified by faith, bestowed all the riches from the father, and transformed to be an over-comer by God's ordained way. The book is really helpful and encouraging in experiencing a balanced Christian life, in understanding God's ordained way, and in bearing cross to follow the Lord in an absolute way.

Third time is a charm!!!
Dreaming Pachinko is clearly Adamson's finest outing to date. Building on characters introduced in Suckerpunch and Popsicle, Pachinko features a dense, suspenseful mystery, intertwined with the usual colorful, feaky, oddball characters we are used to seeing in Adamson's Japan. Read the book in three days while on vacation. Great summer reading. Great in the fall, winter or spring too!!

Pachinko You Say???
The title did catch my eye, and this is the first chance I have had to read Isaac Adamson, but I can promise you it will not be the last. Adamson takes you down a very intriging and winding path of magazine reporter Billy Chaka beginning with a Japanese Teen Idol, a beautiful girl, her friend, and enemies going back 60 years. The novel is as ingriging as it is a entertaining. The look at Tokyo is wonderful, and will suprise, and educate you at every turn. This lightning fast adventure will keep you turning pages, and staying up much later than you planned.
