Fantastic compelation
This is the best sci-fi compelation that I have ever read. This collection is more then great science fiction, it proves that science fiction can have great literary merit. Most of the greats are represented here - Flowers for Algernon, The Star, Sand Kings... A great anthology.

Anthology w/ among the best sci-fi stories I've ever read.
This is an superb collection of memorable short sci-fi stories from such luminaries as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Harlan Ellision. Each story has the incisive wit and starkness indicative of an great sci-fi story. A must-have, unfortunately out-of-print (I lent a friend mine and never got it back!)

Visions from the Golden Land: Burma and the Art of Lacquer
Published in Hardcover by British Museum Press (January, 2000)
Author: Ralph Isaacs

Important new catalogue on Burmese Lacquerware
The British Museum, London, should be applauded for launching the first significant exhbition of Burmese art in a major European institution. The catalogue is well-researched, well-written and presents provocative questions. A pioneering section pertaining to inscriptions on Burmese lacquer is especially interesting. Furthermore, the installation in London at the museum was stunning.

Visions from the Golden Land
This is the first authoritative book devoted exclusively to the lacquer ware of Burma (Myanmar). I am an importer of Asian antiques, tribal, and folk art primarily from S.E. Asia, including Burma, and was delighted with the thoroughness of this books content. The range of lacquer ware discussed is quite thorough, the discussion on inscriptions is invaluable and the photographs are excellent. If the chapter on lacquer ware in Sylvia Fraser-Lu's Burmese Crafts Past and Present seemed too short, this is the next book to get. For the very knowledgable and very serious Burmese lacquer collector some of the examples used in the book may be dissapointing. I highly recommend this book.

Asimov: most prolific writer in English language,
fiction and non-fiction.

_The Wellsprings of Life_ is an eloquent tracing
of the elements of biochemistry, physiology
and especially, the branching phyla of the
of the Carl Gustav Linnaeus cladistics, or
branchings in nomenclature. The biochemistry
is arcane and elegant, the tree of life is
well charted in science, in Latin derived
names for the various branchings in the
phylal cladistics of Linnaeus and biochemistry
in professorial presentation, continuing to
be the best introduction to an interest in
biology, biochemistry or plant and animal
taxonomy, taxonomy being identification of
the branches phylum, order, class, family,
genus, and species.

The naming of any species in biology is
always following the genus. The two words
genus and species, genus first, then species
are always Latin derived words, they are
italized, and the first letter of genus
is capitalized.

E.g., (for example), _Zea mays_, corn

The word corn in Britain describes what we
grow here as wheat. Corn is the British
word for what we call wheat.

Also, the taxonomic keys used to derive
species identification are intense.
E.g., the Dover paperback, _Winter Botany_.
The Harvard botanist Asa Gray's _Manual of
Botany_. The companion Latin key to
Gray, _Gardener's Latin_ by Neal.

Some plants mimic a superficial inspection
of another plant and are not biochemically
or cladistically, or geographically related.

The _Wellsprings of Life_ by Isaac Asimov
is must reading for any student of science
interested in G rated academic intellectual
science reading material.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy Read Four Science Fiction Classics: Foundation: The Psychohistorians/Mimsy Were the Borogoves/the Martian Chronic

A Superb Collection
FOUR SCIENCE FICTION CLASSICS is an exceptional compilation of the absolute best the genre had to offer in the 1940s and 1950s. It is composed of six powerful stories which transcend the decades in which they were written, stirring the heart and mind as powerfully now as when they were first published.

While these stories would shine under any conditions, the narrations of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy actually serve to further energize the prose. I was especially moved by the performance of William Shatner. Despite having been a fan of Star Trek for decades, I was completely unprepared for the depth and the brilliance of his vocal talents. Shatner's clear insight into the stories and their characters radiates with every word and intonation.

I could not more strongly recommend either an audio book or a science fiction collection.

Interesting combination
I only wanted "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" and it did come separate on tape and even on vinyl at one time. It did not hurt to get the rest of the tapes. Foundation: The Psychohistorians is what the Foundation trilogy is all about and the newer foundation books you can read the separate reviews. The Martian Chronicles is ok but I do not want to spend time reviewing this section, as better reviews will be under the book description.

However Mimsy is a different animal. So I will say something about this. It is a small sci-fi story about a formula that allows you into an alternate universe that everyone used to have access to. The problem with getting there is that it requires a different paradigm and a formula. The paradigm requires a mindset that diapers as we get older and the formula is in front of us if we know where to look. An added plus is that it is read to us enthusiastically by William Shatner

The Word: The Dictionary That Reveals the Hebrew Sources of English

Visit the website first, or you'll be overwhelmed!
There is an introduction and preface to the dictionary, but most readers will need more essays about this mind-blowing topic before trying to take on the 22,000 words the book traces back to their ultimate source in "Edenic" (Biblical Hebrew +.) I strongly suggest first visiting the Edenic website. Once you have a good grasp of the thesis, and words grouped into fun topics, like animal names, you'll then be able to appreciate the reference book. A future edition has to do what these essays, and the audio and video lectures do. Break the examples down into words that had root letters shift or change place, etc. In the book, you have to keep all the babble effects from Babel in your mind at the same time. The dictionary attempts to make this clear, but most readers will want the easier overviews first.

A Fascinating Book on the Hebrew Origins of English
This is a really fascinating book. I have often wondered why the etymology sections in dictionaries stop at the ancient Greek or Latin and only very occasionally go back to more ancient languages like Arabic or Sanskrit. Mozeson has collected English words which he claims have clear connections to the Hebrew. For example the (Hebrew) word "marah" is found in the Bible to mean mirror, "derekh" means trek or track, "deo" means die and so on. Some of the connections might seem teneous but most are real eye openers. Oh, and in case you are worried Mozeson is not a fundementalist Bible basher although it must be said that according to Jewish tradition Genesis 11:1 refers to the Hebrew Language (look it up) which would make it the orignal language. Mozeson has written other books on slang language and on teenagers. If you are not at least a little familiar with Hebrew this book will be of less interest to you.

Great collection of very short stories
I read this book years ago, but I can still recite two of the stories in it almost word-for-word. It helps that they're short (every story has to be under two thousand words), but some of the stories are really exceptional. And for those that aren't great... big deal! How long does it take to read two thousand words?

JOTTINGS OF GENIUS
The journal Isaac Babel kept when he rode with the Cossacks in the 1919-20 war the Soviet Union waged against Poland served as source material for the stories in his brilliant collection, RED CALVARY. The diaries are a gem in themselves, displaying Babel's immediate response to the situation at hand, later to be transmuted by the writer's alchemy into the gold of the stories. It is a little slice of history in the raw, viewed through the eyes of a great writer, a writer who refused to conform to "socialist realism," a writer who 20 years later would be executed by the State Security Apparatus of the USSR.

Honoring our Fathers and Forefathers
In light of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the families that have suffered from those attacks, this book provides perspective on the impact a father's life can have on future generations. The backbone of any nation is the families that inhabit it. The author does well in explaining the significance of being united generationally in this trying and difficult time. As we admire the sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives for the freedom of this nation, this book also calls us to live our lives for the sake of our children and our children's children.
