An insightful look into the man who transformed our nation.
Although few people knew his name, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan became a force of history. Applying his belief that the Constitution and Bill of Rights was written for all Americans, Brennan shaped the nation by attaining majorities is such cases as Roe v. Wade and Texas v. Johnson (flag burning). His legacy is one of justice and equality, of cooperation and liberty, of criminal rights and human rights, of compassion, moral rectitude and courage. If you do not know this man, you do not know the greatest force in constitutional law this American century has ever seen. Kim Eisler, using various sources, opened a window through which every American can see the Court, and one of its most important jurists, in langauge we can all understand. The best book on the Supreme Court (and a supreme Justice) I have ever read.

Watch out for that snake!
"Lake of the Big Snake: An African Rain Forest Adventure" combines a story by Isaac Olaleye with illustrations by Claudia Shepard. The easy-to-read text opens, "In an African rain forest called Inisa, lived two boys, Ade and Tayo. Best friends they were." The friends have an adventure which, as the title hints, involves a startling encounter with a huge water snake.

This book features some really beautiful illustrations: the colorful African clothing, bright green foliage of the rain forest, purple berries, etc. Ultimately, it presents commendable messages about loyalty, courage, and the danger of irresponsibility.

A Must-Read follow up to "Solace of Fierce Lanscapes"
If you've read Lane's "Solace of Fierce Landscapes" you'll want to read "Landscapes of the Sacred". "Landscapes" was actually written before "Solace," but has been recenly reprinted by John Hopkins Press with an expanded introduction. There's lots here for anyone interested in the cultural, religious, spiritual, and philosophical aspects of how we human beings experience place, especially those places that have sacred significance. The historical background on Puritans and Native AMerican spirituality are especially welcome.

A real eye-opener!
More than any other I have found, this book brought Isaac Newton to life: as a brilliant human being, but still just a human being, with as broad a spectrum of flaws, quirks and vulnerabilities as any of us have. It shows him more as some of his contemporaries may have seen him, before the publication of the Principia began to transform him into a shining demigod of the Enlightenment. It does shine a light on his admittedly obsessive (but still sensible, focused, meticulous and sincere) investigations of theological and alchemical claims that mattered greatly to his generation. Many of these investigations proved to be fruitless, but that does not diminish the man. For these claims lost much of their interest to later generations precisely because the new analytical tools that Newton published in the Principia enabled revolutionary advances in physical knowledge that rapidly pushed alchemy and theology onto the sidelines of intellectual history.

Truly a wonderful, balanced and satisfying collection of essays, each written by an expert in a particular perspective on Newton's life and work. I would welcome publication of similar collections of lucid, expert essays on Robert Boyle and Charles Darwin.

Limericks: Too Gross/or Two Dozen Dirty Dozen Stanzas
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1985)
Authors: Isaac Asimov and John Ciardi
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $6.49
Collectible price: $24.85
Average review score:

Unexpected humor from two great minds.
I am not the type to be aroused by a bawdy limerick; nay I seldom get past the first line in a bar. Whilst searching for another book by one of my favorite authors (Asimov) I came across this little number. It certainly demonstrates that one needs to have a command of the language to be a good limericist. Asimov and Ciardi prove this again and again in this slightly racy very intelligent collaboration. From start to finish it was filled with excellent belly laughs and some very thoughtful verses. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to see yet another side of Asimov
