state of the art -- understanding an indeterministic world
If you were forced to rely on only one book on the philosophy of science today (2002), this would be the one. A collection of 26 essays, "Causality and Explanation" represents the state of the art. Salmon dedicates the book to Carl G. Hempel, who developed the deductive-nomological, or covering law model of scientific explanation. Clearly, then, Salmon is no post-Kuhnian epistemological radical. There is progress beyond Hempel, but it is not in the social constructionist direction. Not for Salmon, anyway, and not for me either. Rather, it points in the direction of probabilistic, stochastic, explanation replacing the vestiges of Laplacian determinism. Many of the essays are quite dense, but the book contains a Key of sorts, in the form of three essays that are grouped as "Concise Overviews." Read these first and the rest makes much more sense. Salmon is an analytical philosopher, and analytical philosophy is a tradition that values clarity of expression. This book is a marvelous accomplishment. It has proved quite useful in clarifying my thinking as I try to teach sociology undergraduates the scientific method, particularly on the distinction between deterministic and probabilistic causation. It is truly sad that it is not read by everyone who ever runs into Thomas Kuhn and the postmodern vector that he inspired.

The Portia de Rossi of Philosophy.
In an increasingly uncertain world Salmon has to be regarded as the heir to throne apparent vis a viz Scientific Explanation. The king is dead (Hempel) long live the king. This topic, as Salmon openly admits is currently a very sexy subject in philosophy. What Dame Edna Everage is to Epistemology, Portia de Rossi is to Scientific Explanation. Salmon ditches the Hempelian deductive nomological model with it's assumptions firmly rooted in Laplacian determinism and takes up the challenge of causality starting with Xeno's Arrow with his At-at theory combined with smatterings of Reichenbach's mark transmission theory and Railtons ideal explanatory text. In the end we have the leather glove of neo-causally underpinned explanation and pragmatic relevance slapping the likes of Hume and Russell firmly across the chops. His topic pervades all areas of scientific philosophy today and as with Four Decades Salmon references with a clarity and ease that makes reading his work an absolute luxury compared with much of contemporary philosophy - rife with punctuated unintelligible vernacular. If causality and explanation is your thang, Wes is your man. This publication is a must read for any budding empirically bent philosopher.

Hardboiled New Orleans
This is New Orleans, nicely hardboiled, a very noir story. Bob Skinner is such a fine mystorical writer (historical mystery for those unfamiliar) reading his books is like taking a time machine back to the 1930s when men were men and to be avoided. Wesley Farrell is a finely tuned Chandleresque hero . . . "Some knew him by sight; others saw the way he moved and the way his eyes roved over them, like the sights on a gun, and looked away quickly."

And the women in the book are not to be taken lightly. What more can you say about a woman who, " . . . was enough to make a Baptist minister drink swamp water, crawl inside a hollow log, and bay at the moon."?

DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING is a well crafted crime novel. Do yourself a favor and take a ride along the dark, forbidding streets of the city that care forgot. It's worth the ride.

O'Neil De Noux

Another great Wes Farrell historical mystery

In 1938 New Orleans, Creole Wesley Farrell continues to pass himself off as a white. However, his attitude comes into question when he meets black nightclub owner Carol Donovan. Finding himself very attracted to Carol, Wesley empathically listens to her plea that hired muscle Archie Badeaux is putting pressure on her.

At about the same time, just released from prison after spending the last decade behind bars, Ernie LeDoux plans to locate and spend his share of the money he stole from a Brinks truck. As Wesley looks into Carol's complaint, black businessmen are suddenly being killed. All of the deceased are linked to a worthless piece of property. Wes is unaware that the three distinct scenarios tie together with him being caught in the middle.

DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING, the third Wes Farrell historical mystery, is a wonderful period piece that will exhilarate fans of the sub-genre. Wes remains a fabulous character and the support cast provides needed authenticity and propellant to keep the story line moving forward. Wesley seems a bit out of characters, especially for readers of the first two novels. However, late thirties New Orleans comes across as if a time machine whisked the reader to the right time and place. Robert Skinner continues to be a leading light, casting a mega-luminesce on the sleuthing fictional world.

Great book from the master of the field
Anyone who has read Brackett previous books knows that his contribution to the data quality arena is fundamental.

This books is important because it states the business case for quality data in clear terms and also provides tools and guidelines to succeed in that long (very long ) journey

Thanks Mike - Great book!
Once again Michael Brackett does a great job. I've often thought that Michael is a perfectionist. However, I see more clearly now that he is a wounded soldier that has experienced the battles of data administration.

You will find this book exciting - I mean is you love the topic. Michael dictates the "right" way to set up data administration and the ramifications of not doing so.

The book is full of suggestions and pointed comments. I believe that Michael knows the subject as well as anyone, and has a vengence to correct the chaos that is currently prevalent in this area.

Buy it! Read it! Then re-read it! Wait about 6 months and read it again until it sinks in. He's right on target with this one.

Excellent book. Recommended.
This book has a good balance between experimental and computational methods. It provides a description of DNA microarray technologies, experimental protocols, and the multiple sources of noise and variability. The book contains an insightful overview of the computational issues and available algorithms for data analysis from differential expression, to dimensionality reduction and visualization (e.g. PCA), to clustering (e.g. hierarchical). New methods are described to gether with a good overview of available software, data bases, web sites, and other resources, as well as several "walk through" examples. I particularly enjoyed the last chapter on Systems Biology.

By far the best book on DNA microarrays.
"Very complete : covers both the experimental and the computational methods with specific examples. Written by two top scientists who have worked hard at complementing each other's strengths. I particularly enjoyed the last chapter on Systems Biology which provides a masterful overview of current resaerch trends."

Provides a complete readiness assessment framework
The heart of this book is a readiness framework that blends assessment, strategy and tactics and project planning. The focus is on business and customer value.

I like the way the book starts, with a look at the big picture, defining your goals, and complete look at all stakeholders. The beginning also introduces e-business models, the readiness framework itself and a quick sanity check to test your readiness.

This is followed by a more detailed look at the "eBiz Readiness! Framework" and its major parts: stakeholders, components and enablers. Also addressed are knowledge management, trust and technology, all of which are interwoven into the fabric of e-business. I especially liked the framework metrics, which include benchmarking, customer and business metrics, and how to manage the metrics as indicators.

What makes this book practical is the map given to applying the framework for implementation of e-business processes and systems, and once implemented, how to effectively manage using an evaluation framework. The evaluation framework covers both small- and big-business perspectives in the form of stakeholder assessments. Also addressed in detail are trust services (perhaps the cornerstone of e-business), security, and related issues.

Another aspect of this book that I liked very much is the coverage of the e-business stakeholder model and governance, which spans topics such as globalization, socioeconomics and your defined market. This sets the book apart from those that seem to focus on technology without a regard for the bigger picture.

This book is an invaluable resource to both business planers and IT because it balances the business and technical issues, both of which are addressed, in assessing e-business readiness.

An e-Business Bonanza
Finally, someone has started to 'de-mystify' what e-business is! The foundational material yields a discerning insight into the concrete necessities of e-business whether large or small. The stakeholder model details what components are needed and exactly how the elements of e-business fit together, and also what you need to be successful - the book gives you proven, effective yardsticks to measure where your business is and where your business is going! An excellent read! I highly recommend it. Jutla and Craig are groundbreakers!

The Eighth Lively Art: Conversations With Painters, Poets, Musicians, and the Wicked Witch of the West

Wonderful book on Art, Seattle, Friendship
Not only is it one of the more delightful books I have read recently, it could very well be the best autobiography ever written by a lifetime resident of my hometown.

"The Eighth Lively Art" is at once a colorful history of Seattle in the 1950s, a thoughtful exploration of the artistic process, and a celebration of the connections that exist between people.

Wesley Wehr recounts his life as a young man in Seattle in the 1950s where, as a student of music composition at the University of Washington, he was befriended by such luminaries as painter Mark Tobey, poet Elizabeth Bishop, and actress Margaret Hamilton. He meets painters Morris Graves, Guy Anderson, and Helmi Juvonen, all of whom become lifelong friends. He has encounters with famous twentieth-century figures like photographer Imogen Cunningham and composer Ernest Bloch who offer there wisdom, hospitality, and encouragement.

The book is divided into chapters that focus, for the most part, on individuals he has known and people he has met. The artists convey their ideas about life and love while sharing their personal experiences with and approaches towards the composition process. Wes Wehr also relates his own, often unsuccessful, forays into music and painting during this early stage in his life.

For those of us who have grown up in Seattle, this book is a reminder of how this place has shaped our own sensibilities. How many of us, like the young Guy Anderson, wandered through the Burke Museum as a child looking at Northwest Coast Indian Art or, like Wes himself, spent our late teens hanging out on the Ave?

This book is, most significantly, about the power of friendship. I am so accustomed to living in a world where everything is assigned value based on net worth or earnings potential, I often lose sight of the things which have truly enriched my own life. After reading Wes' account of the various friendships he has established and maintained over the years, I recognized more clearly how very important such friendships have been to me.

Fun and Friendly Book
I have really enjoyed this book. For the first time I feel an insight into the Northwest Artists that I have not felt before. It really leaves me asking for more. I hope that Wes will follow up with more details on these incredibly interesting people and their respective relationships with each other. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in artists and their lives, as well as anyone looking for some honest, open and fun reading.

Nicely written book for rarely found subject
Pros:

This is one of the only two books available covering EIGRP in details. Most of other routing references do not have the same level on in-detail descriptions and protocol-specific information this book has. Add to that the smooth style of the authors which makes reading this book a pleasant experience

Cons:

May be EIGRP's code is not finalized yet and there are many enhancements added after this book is published. I think the authors need to issue a second edition with more information regard new features in the protocol. Although the book gives numerous examples of real life scenarios, It cames short of small pool of theoretical details " which are necessary if you run into *other* scenario rather than the ones listed. Finally, as many networks are migrating from IGRP to EIGRP, I think the authors should designate section for the migration process

Consise and precise
For a book that weighs in at only 100 pages it seemed rather lightweight in comparison to other EIGRP/routing books I have read. But the quality of the content is very consise. The book is well paced and covers all aspects of EIGRP. From the mechanics of the protocol through to setup and network design decisions. The protocol troubleshooting sections are worth the price of the book in itself ( Far better than any others I have read) . And for the low price this is an excellent purchase.

Top Notch.

Fun time-travel
The Escape is an excellent book. Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell what the story's about from the blurb on the back, so I suspect many people don't read it. The Escape is a time-travel story, and a very good one. The main characters in the book are Torres, Kim, and Neelix, who are separated from the others. We also get to see a lot of Paris and Tuvok working together, which is interesting. The plot is really interesting and very twisty - after all, it's time travel. At first, all the talk of Time Periods, Real Time, time-jumping and back-timing is very confusing, but the authors do an excellent job of explaining it and making it clear. I couldn't figure out how they'd solve the problem, and the whole book was very intriguing. This is one of the more inventive books I've read - most authors don't want to tackle the confusing concept of time-traveling, and it's great when someone does. Even though the book is a very early Voyager, the characters are well done and there are few errors. The Escape is a well-written, suspenseful, and fun time-travel story!

A very exciting story...I couldn't put it down!
This is the kind of story that would make a great Star Trek episode. I loved the whole concept of this novel. It was well thought out. The characters were very interesting. I enjoyed every page!
