Good, but not Dunning
This book came out after Grace, Faith & Holiness. It is an easier read- Grider writes a little better. But his theology comes out on the side of the turn of the 20th century Revivalist theology in the Holiness movement. While Dunning understands and expounds the relational foundation of Christ's work, Grider is more apt to label and categorize things according to experience and his categories. Dr. Gride is a great churchman, good teacher and good writer, and this would be a great book except it sets itself up as the Holiness theology at the end of the 20th century, when some of its thought comes from the end of the 19th.

superbly written, a wonderful book
As a layperson interested in learning more about Wesleyan-Holiness Theology, this book far exceeded my expectations. It is written in plain english, well-organized and filled with deep insights. For me, this was one of those "you'll never be the same after you read it" books. A wonderful book that I return to time and again for spiritual growth and inspiration. Great bibliography too - this book introduced me to other significant resources (like Wiley).

it is ok, but it could use improving
This math book teaches the basics of algebra. The content is ok, but it lacks some functions of algebra. In my opinion, it could use a few more word problems and exercises.

A very good review of the controversies surrounding the NEA
This book should be part of any basic library on government funding of the arts. Ziegler does a very good job laying out the problems, which unfortunately have been ignored for decades. Recommended reading.

Not Your average western!
While this isnt the best western ever written, its definetly worth reading. This is a gritty realistic western that is refreshing as the main character actually gets hurt, he isnt immune to bullets like some westerns i've read. He even misses his shots occasionally! The author doesnt use excessive detail on surroundings etc., enough to get his point across. I highly recommend it, as this book is a very realistic portrayal of how the west really was. Not everyone liked everyone, people die, good and bad! If you like happy endings, this isnt exactly the book your looking for. I hope to see more books from Mr. Laing. The main cons about this book was it seemed to end to soon. :-)

The Bible and Its Wines
Published in Hardcover by Natl Prohibition Foundation (July, 1985)
Author: Charles Wesley Ewing

Used price: $24.50

An excellent resource
This is an excellent resource, explaining the usages of the term "wine" in the Bible. Since the Bible does not contradict itself, and is God's Word, this helps to explain context and usage of the times when it was written. Wine is still a mocker, strong drink a rager. It does not, however, definitively settle all the wine/grape juice debates. I wish someone would put it back into print.

Good, quick, chronological reference
I like this little reference booklet. It works well when using it to provide a framework for studying the New Testament. Not only does it provide a little background for the NT books of the bible, but a nice timeline with dates as well. When reading chronologically through the bible, not only do you get the feel of being there, but you also understand the non-doctrinal passages as well, ie. "As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you..."

Interesting but to my mind very uneven
I found this to be a mildly interesting collection of papers but rather uneven in focus and range. Several papers tried to reach theoretical heights while others contented themselves by reporting on specific projects, e.g. Math Forum. The volume is quite 'a house divided' but there are cross currents.

The biggest problem with the book is that it has something for everyone. Hence each chapter has some points of interest but nothing of great insight or profundity is elaborated. For instance the theorising on communities is to my mind absolutely primitive. No mention of Hobbes or Locke here. The whole question of the political dynamic of a community is simply not addressed, i.e. power structures. This is serious flaw.

The book tends to reflect technocratic stance on community building. At all costs avoid value judgements and the moral dimension. Communities by numbers.

In fact, the communities described in various papers seem to really be fan clubs or hobby clubs which are using the internet to further their purposes. No big deal in many ways. Of course from the authors perspective that would be too simple a reading of the actual value of 'virtual comunities'. The danger is that some readers may simply perceive many of the efforts to elaborate on the digital components of a 'community' as mere psuedo-intellectual twaddle. For example no one speaks of a 'telephonic community' emerging post Alexander Bell. People were more grounded in those days it seems.

There is much emphasis on Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) throughout the book as a significant leap into a new state of togetherness. Much of this is hard to argue with if it was merely stating the obvious, i.e. kids talking about games in chat rooms, parents discussing their kids math progress, etc. However, one can't but feel that the thrust of the book in towards overkill. The internet is in many of these instances is simply a souped up penpal system.

It is easy to be critical of a book like this and see it akin to any other book telling us how much sand is in the Sahara. However, the authors clearly believe that the internet can inspire a new communal modality.

I am not sure I would share their enthusiasm having run several lists and online 'club's over the years. What strikes me as glaringly absent, is an analysis of how one motivates users to remain within a group and contribute. How do you motivate people? Crack that and the world will change. A recent issue of the Communications of the ACM published interesting research from Microsoft showing just how hard it is to get people to come forward socially on the net.

I wouldn't recommend passing over this book. It is worth skimming out of interest just to keep yourself abreast of emergent themes but I would put in the second rank and in preference first buy a good elearning book (by Alessi for instance).

Competitive Gymnastics for Girls (Sportsgirl)

What happened to the "competitive"?
Based on the title, I had expected this book to be about competitive gymnastics. And it was, sort of. It dosn't talk about going to competitions or preparing for them. The book dosn't really talk about the competitive side of gymnastics, but includes safety tips, stretching and conditioning exercises, basic moves, and a big glossary with definitions of many words that have to do with gymnastics. I would say this book would be good for beginning gymnasts, or gymnasts who want to learn some safety tips or conditioning exercises.
