Our Horses, Our Teachers
Ah, what can I say about such an important book in my life?

Hans is a poor boy who dreams of riding dressage with the Spanish Riding School of his native Vienna. He attains his goal through hard work and perseverance, by his own merit and against the odds. The book is beautifully written with a flowing narrative style, engaging for both adults and children. The illustrations are the best I have seen from Dennis, at times humorous, at times scholarly, and always precise.

I did my senior thesis on the birth of dressage in the Renaissance, but without this book I would never have even heard of Xenophon, or the passage, or known that the Ancient Greeks rode without stirrups. I illustrated it with my own copies of Wesley Dennis's drawings from this book.

Also highly recommended as horsey history, "Gaudenzia, Pride of the Palio" by the same writer/illustrator team.

If you would like to find out more about Classical dressage please check out Laura Camins's "Glorious Horsemen" and Walter Leitdke's "Royal Horse and Rider," both of which deal with the birth of dressage in the Renaissance according to modern scholarship, and by extension the noble equestrian ballets of which the Spanish Riding school is the last still extant. Did you know that the Louvre's great central courtyard was designed to accommodate horse ballets exactly like those in this book?

When I first read this book, when I was about seven years old, I owned a Lipizzan mare of my own. She was for me what Borina was to Hans, my schoolmaster. She was small and gray, with a wide girth, branded, and very long lived. She would do caprioles as we galloped through the field, I kid you not. Were it not for this book I would not have the words to describe her, to remember her like this, and so I am indebted Marguerite Henry.

To bring one spark of beauty into the world is worth a life's dedication, is it not? Certainly mine.

Read the book and you will understand.

Buy it. Now.
If you have any doubts about purchasing this book, forget them and buy it now. I was given this book when I was a child (20 years ago) and it thrills to me to this day. Ms. Henry writes with such imagery that you find yourself caught up as Hans, the young boy who is captivated by the stallions. Not only is the writing terrific, but so is the artwork. This story is one of my all-time favorites.

The Best Horse Story Ever!
This is the story of Hans, a young Austrian boy that wishes more than anything to work with the "Dancing White Horses," the Lipizzaner stallions of Vienna. In the story he is accepted to the Spanish Riding School, the finest riding school in the world, and then the work begins. Teamed with his patient instructors, one two-legged and one four-legged, Hans sets out to achieve his dream and prove to everyone that any goal is possible with dedication. This is my all-time favorite horse story; the characters are believeable, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is timeless.

By far the most advanced C book I read
I have been a C and C++ programmer for 5 years, and is regarded as an professional C and C++ programmer. After scanning this book, I think I should re-estimate my C skill.

In one word, this book is the most advanced C book I've read, it presents lots of wonderful techniques and ideas, and more, all the things are very useful. For examples:

* Use standard C's setjmp/longjmp to implement WIn32 SEH-like exception handling machanism.

* Very detailed and smart memory management solution.

* All the data structures and utilities in well-defined, reusable format: atoms, tables, sets, vectors(dynamic arrays), rings, strings, arithmetric with any precisions, thread library... everything you need to build a whole new system.

I'd say that once you master each of those things (this means read and re-read until understanding occur, as Fransis Glassborow said ), you will be an outstanding programmer in any circumstance, and can be full of confidence to accept any programming challenge.

The only thing I complain is about the source code. The source code presenting style in this book is relative strange and difficult to catch. I tried to type the code into my PC, and found it's a unpleasent work. Fortunately, the all source can be download from the book's web page, so, I still gave 5 stars.

Excellent book
I have just finished reading the first six chapter of this book and find it very instructive.
As a programmer, I followed the way of C->C++->Java in the past three years. Now as I am coming back to C£¬ I find this book helps me to finish a cycle in software engineering.
When I am reading, I imagine how every idea introduced here can help to implement those "OOP" features of Java and C++. It reveals to me the very essence of software itself.
Originally I plan to buy it by company money, but now I changed the idea to pay by myself because I really want to keep it.

From novice to a professional
If you want to become a professional programmer overnight.read and thoroughly understand this book. If one could master the techniques described in this book..he may never have to worry about failing software developer's job interviews. This last statement is based on my personal experience.
The chapters provide source code which is clear, efficient, and outrightly professional, the description is concise, to the point and clear enough. Most of the code in the book can be used without any modification. I don't know of a book in the market that could teach how to design and implement a user-level threads library from the scratch WITHOUT any help from the Operating System. Simply wonderful

Teaching Shakespeare in Sec. Schools
This is a wonderful, clear, simple, step by step guide to teach shakespeare in a secondary classroom. The excercises are clear and easy to implement and the students can see growth right away! Great resource for teachers!!!

Buy this book!
This books offers a practical and easy to impliment approach to the study of Shakespeare and using his lanaguage affectively. A great resouce for teachers, directors and actors, Van Tassel outlines a workable set of simple activites that allow the student/actor to find the meaning behind the words. I used this text in a workshop this summer and was amazed at the improvment made in interpretation from first-time actors. A great resource for teachers with inexperienced students. As an teacher, the middle section is invaluable, with clear examples of how to present the exercises. As an actor myself, i will take the lesson into my own performances. This book will not sit on your bookshelf - its clear, understandable, practical and just the right length for a busy theatrical professional! A great find!

"Library Journal" review posted here
Here is the "Library Journal" September 1, 2000 review of "Clues to Acting Shakespeare" by Wesley Van Tassel and "A Shakespearean Actor Prepares" by Adrian Brine and Michael York. For centuries, actors have known what the American hoi polloi, through the efforts of Kenneth Branagh, films like "Shakespeare in Love," and eminent critic Harold Bloom's "Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human," is now acknowledging: Shakespeare is cool. The venerable dramatic publisher Smith & Kraus, of course, has known this for years and contributes to their fine stable of theatrical thoroughbreds with a fine work from esteemed actor York and European actor, director, and teacher Brine. Geared to actors studying and performing Shakespeare, the instructional and conversational text is also appropriate for nonactor Shakespearean fans. Both Brine and York smoothly blend together their considerable experience and expertise through practical commentaries on language, verse, and soliloquies and an intriguing chapter on Stanislavsky, from whose seminal acting text, "An Actor Prepares," the title is taken. Appendixes include a brief "Who's Who" and a Shakespearean biography, chronology of plays, and reading list. If Brine and York's book, with its elegant pedigree, is a race horse, Van Tassel's beautifully conceived and executed text is a Clydesdale, a workhorse of a workbook that is purposefully divided to reach manifold audiences: College students and independent workshops, high school students and teachers, and professional actors and coaches, with a final resourse section from which everyone can benefit. Through both the instructional narrative and his bountiful exercises, Van Tassel, a director and acting teacher, explicates the basic Shakespearean tenets of scansion, caesura, phrasing, breathing, textual analysis, imagery, structure and rhythm, and antithesis, and he does it gracefully and appropriately for the diverse readers he intends to reach. This is the kind of helpful instructional aid, both detailed and clear, for which both students and teachers constantly clamor. Both works should be acquired for performing arts collections, by "Clues to Acting Shakespeare" is a no-brainer purchase for acting collections in all libraries.-- Barry X. Well written, plenty of beaver trapping tips and photos.
I have read many beaver trapping books in my days and hundreds of other trapping related books. Wesley attacks problems most often encountered with beaver trappers in the more southern parts of the country. The book is well written, easy to understand and flows very nicely. The photos are clear and represent a very clear idea of the subject matter. Wesley does an outstanding job teaching the reader, whatever his skill may be, how to trap beaver by the hundreds if they are available. The hand drawn diagrams add that personal touch and they are easy to read. The writing of the book is flowing, easygoing and refreshing after decades of stale old beaver trapping books. Good job Wes! It's a winner!

A very enjoyable, informative book
I greatly enjoyed reading your two books, CONIBEAR BEAVER TRAPPING IN OPEN WATER, and BLACKTAIL DEER HUNTING ADVENTURES. I also look forward to seeing your work in "The Trapper and Predator Caller" magazine. Your work really counterbalances a lot of the anti-hunting and anti-trapping sentiment which is so strong especially here in California.

A very good beaver book!
A very good beaver book. Your methods are very similar to ours

There's Fred!!!
What a wonderful book! I've seen Fred Wesley live playing with Maceo Parker and the JB horns. He's down with the funk and he's been everywhere and seen everything. JB, Maceo, Ike and Tina Turner, LA and trying to make it playing an acoustic instrument soulfully in an age of production. The great thing about this book is that Fred seems to write with a minimal agenda. He's not a charting artist who's trying to magnify his own star, he just lays it down honestly. Anybody down with James Brown will gain from his insights on why musicians stuck through and put up with James' abuse and degradation.

Surprises for me were the tales of Count Basie and his life in LA. I didn't realize that he had overcome so much personal stuff by the time that I had seen him. This is a very readable insightful book that I recommend without qualification to anybody interested in funk. Let's hope Fred gets his due and we get more books from the perspectives of the musicians that make the music we love happen.

Like being backstage and onstage with Fred
I had the privilege of meeting Fred Wesley just a couple of years ago. A very down to earth man and as fine a musician as you can find. I was thrilled to see that he had a book in the works and it exceeded my expectations.

His recollections are detailed and straight up..... good, bad, and indifferent. The book is segmented into the various, specific phases of Wesley's career. Each is filled with insights and gems that read as though he were talking directly to the reader.

I read the whole thing and then went back and cherry-picked through specific chapters a second and third time.

Just great!

I'm not even a music lover
Yet I couldn't put this book down.
My husband bought this book because he's a big fan of Fred Wesley and he loves jazz and funk.
I picked the book up to glance at the pictures and I was hooked. You don't have to be a music fan to love this book
It was like reading a great story. There was an inside look at a world that most people only see the most public part of.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a book that they just can't put down.

Good Stuff
I believe this book was inspired by the Spirit to assist couples in relationships that may lead to marriage, and couples that are already married. "If this marriage was made in Heaven, Why am I going through hell" is a very plain and straight to the point book about how to have a succesful Christian marriage. The book gives excellent scriptural support as well as everyday examples of what to do and what not to in a marriage. It is insightful, exciting and intriguing to read such a book. My wife and I have purchase this book as gifts for many of our young family members entering into marriage. We have been married almost ten years and the book has definately help us. So,please read the book and enjoy.

Singles needs to read this book
This is definitely a book for singles to read before they enter the institution of marriage. Being a single person myself I was a little apprehensive about reading this book, but after the first chapter I know that this message is God sent. Pastor Wesley takes a dynamic approach to the institution of marriage and by using the word of God to back up everything that he had to say, made it even more enjoyable. I know from reading the book that when the time comes I will have a successful marriage. Thank you Pastor Wesley for allowing God to use you.

A Heaven Sent Answer for Your Earthly Marriage
At times there are things that people will do on their own to proivide a "quick fix" to their marriage problems. And yet, if the marriage started out with God, it will also take God to keep things going. It is amazing to me how many christians will seek all types of advice for marriage except going to the word of God. Then I hear comments like, "I don't know where to go in the Bible or I don't understand what this means." the search is over as Pastor Wesley has been directed by the Holy Spirit to provide practical, sincere and spiritual guidance and advice for your marriage. If you would like an inside guide to improving your marriage, please read this book, from a man who is not only inspired by God to write, but also lives what he writes. I found that this book has helped me in my personal marriage and has helped me give advice to others. Also, if you started your marriage without God, this book will provide insight what you can and should be doing. I especially like the humor and real life illustrations that help me to apply scriptures to practical everyday living. Whether your marriage is great or on the rocks, get this book NOW! This book will bless your socks off!

John Wesley Hardin : Suppressed Memories

Unique and compelling
My father was born in Fannin County, Texas in 1910, the birthplace of John Wesley Hardin. I grew up listening to stories of Hardin's exploits and was pleasantly surprised to run across Steppen Wirth's book, John Wesley Hardin: Suppressed Memories. Many of my father's stories of Hardin came to life and old memories resurfaced.

The various biographies about Wes Hardin are little more than a retelling of his autobiography. Some authors go on to vilify, and some glorify Hardin but none really gives any insight into Hardin's personality. There isn't any reason for anyone to write
another biography on Wes Hardin unless new information is uncovered and that is doubtful. That's why a book like Steppen Wirth's is refreshing. He is not limited to rehashing Hardin's autobiography. Like one Reviewer put it: "The line between what is real and what the author has crafted from imagination is difficult to see." In Steppen's book Hardin steps from the pages, you can feel him breathe. You can almost touch him. The softer side of Wes Hardin, his deep love for his wife and close bond with family and friends moved me. Just when I started to feel empathy for Hardin the author reminded me of Hardin's willingness to kill. I admit there are parts of this book I think are too graphic for my taste. I wonder about the necessity of such violent detail. I have never understood why men have to kill each other but I've never understood war either. Most women don't. I realize Hardin's world was a different world, a world where you had to stay alive during that horrible period after the Civil War. I know anti-Union sentiments were still strong in my father's youth.

This title is a welcome addition to the Hardin list of books. Steppen's prose is vivid and strong. I became so engrossed I read the whole thing in one sitting. I will read this book again and look forward to more books by Steppen Wirth.

An insight into the complex personality of Wes Hardin
This book tells the story of the meteoric rise of master gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, a legend by the age of eighteen, who dazzled outlaws and lawmen alike with his extreme daring and phenomenal skill with firearms. The author, Steppen Wirth manages cleverly to interweave crystalline paragraphs, reminiscences, letters, journals, and newspaper accounts to recreate this intensely human story. Eminently fascinating...a colorful, and inventive book, but not one for the queasy.

As a Hardin fan I read this book with great curiosity. In fact I read it four times and each time I found something else to like about it. Steppen Wirth effectively conveys the many sides of John Wesley Hardin's complex personality. It is truly a work of art. I highly recommend it.

Si Dunn. Dallas Morning News, Dallas Texas
In his own time, gunfighter John Wesley Hardin was one of the most feared men in Texas and the Southwest. Author Steppen Wirth has created an unusual yet enteraining book about Hardin by combining fiction with facts, eyewitness accounts, and old photographs from the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. The line between what is real and what the author has crafted from imagination is difficult to see. And that is a key factor in the charm of this work, now in its second printing. Mr. Wirth, a Texas native, lives and writes in Montana.

Indispensable!
I recently completed a vacation in Maine, and as a shameless lighthouse junkie I went in search of a book that would tell me all I needed to know as I set out on my journey. That is, where the lighthouses are, how to get there, the history behind the lights, interesting facts, and great pictures. Courtney Thompson's book provided all of that and much, much more. Well-written, beautifully constructed, amazingly informative. This book is easy enough to use that even the most casual lighthouse seeker will be satisfied, but detailed enough that individuals looking for something more substantial and in-depth will be impressed. From the history of lighthouses in general at the beginning of the book to the discussions and numerous photos of each light presented and the excellent tips on where to head to find each one throughout, the book is never less than comprehensive. It's easy to see how much effort went into the book. I had doubts when I went looking for a book that I'd find what I wanted, but this went well beyond any hopes I had. It's THE best lighthouse guide I've seen. I can't think of much I'd even do to make it better. This was my field guide as I drove through Maine, and the directions were always dead on. And not only directions, but maps, too! I knew where to turn to find the best view of the Cape Elizabeth light. Where to go to see the Cuckholds. What's that light I see as I head into Acadia? Egg Rock, of course! Okay, I know I'm gushing here, but this book is that good. So good, in fact, that I bought the companion volume for the Canadian Maritimes. If lighthouses are a passion for you, this book is an absolute must. It truly made my trip. I can't wait to go back, book in hand, and hunt down more of the lights I missed. Thank you, Courtney Thompson!!!

A great book with beautiful photos of lighthouses!
I highly recommndthis book. It has some really beatiful
photos in it of lighthouses from Maine. I would give it ten stars if I could. It's a lovely book.

What more can a lighthouse enthusiast ask for?
This book has an unbelievable amount of information for the lighthouse enthusiast. Each lighthouse of maine is given from one to three pages each, with up to 10 photos of each light, plus a map, brief history, directions how to get there, how to get a water view, etc. This is undoubtedly overkill for most people, but invaluable for the true enthusiast. My only gripe: the graphic design is uninspired, and most photos are only 2x3 or so. Perhaps fewer, larger photos would have been better.

Great for Beginners
Though there are more scholarly Greek lexicons out there-this one looks great for the beginner who needs the meaning of a word and may not know its lexical form. This really is a great beginning Greek tool and I would highly recommend it.

Jason Fletcher -- Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Best Lexicon made
I've seen a great many Greek Lexicons but none compare to this. It is utterly comprehensive in providing in alphabetical order every form of every Greek word used in the New Testament in clear and easy-to-read format. The first part of the book contains numerous tables of Greek paradigms along with a thorough explanation of each, making it a sort of mini-Greek grammar textook in itself, wonderful for handy reference. I had the hardbacks removed and the pages spiral-bound for easier carry and use. My other Lexicons are now collecting dust as I've found all I could ever want or need in this one superior volume.

Excellent Bible study tool!
As a person interested in translating the Greek New Testament into English, Finnish and Swedish I find Perschbacher's lexicon to be invaluable to me. This because I believe in the doctrine of verbal and plenary inspiration and thus I think God's Word should be translated as accurately as possible. I use the formal equivalency technique, and without Perschbacher's lexicon this would be quite difficult for me since I have not studied New Testament Greek, except a few hours. The great plus with this book is that it lists every greek word of the New Testament, even the ones which are only in the Textus Receptus, from which I prefer to translate. The word definitions are brief but mostly fully accurate. Another plus is the Strong's numbers. Because of the size of the book Perschbacher does not give much Scripture references so one can check how the English versions have translated the words, but still he gives at least one for every word which has the Strong's number. Other works may be consulted for references. I have one tool in my library which nearly matches this, Analytical Greek New Testament by Friberg & Friberg. The superiority of Perschbacher is that he does not leave any word unparsed, as Friberg does, seeing their work uses an Alexandrian Greek text, omitting some words found only in the TR. On the whole this lexicon is a great tool, especially for such who are interested in finding out what God exactly says in the NT, for translators and persons regularly exegeting the Greek New Testament. If you believe every word of the Bible is God-breathed you will love this tool and have great use for it. If there is an NT analytical lexicon better than this I would be surprised. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Essential for lawyers or anyone interested in justice
This is one of my favorite books I've read in recent years. It opens your eyes to the horrible tactics used by corporate lawyers to deny victims their full day in court. Also, Nader and Smith present bulletproof arguments against tort reform. You will learn a TON by reading this.

Required Reading for Law Students
As a law student, I have to say that this should be on every law students "must-read" list! Nader and Smith clearly describe the hardball ruthless tactics used by today's corporate lawyers. This is not the kind of stuff they teach you in law school!

It took real guts and courage to expose the unethical tactics used by too many lawyers today, and I'm grateful that they did so. Highly recommended.

THOSE SUE-HAPPY CORPORATIONS
Beware of the multinational corporations. Not only do they stick it to the taxpayers in forms of bailouts, tax "incentives", and other similar accounts recievable, they are quite willing to stick it to citizens in court and screw up the meaning of the word "due process" in America and the world. A sad commentary on our justice system but a MUST READ.
