Foundations for the Spread of New Testiment Christianity
From the Book's Introduction: "This work tells the little known story of the Russian Christian Evangelical awakening during the years of 1874 - 1928. It details the development as a direct consequence of the availability of the Bible in the Russian language precisely at the time when widespread acceptance was possible - the years of social reform following the freeing of the serfs in 1861 under Tsar Alex II. The authors conclude that for a brief time, the revival was a viable alternative to the nihilistic developments that ultimately led to the overthrow of the imperial regime. They chronicle a growth - despite unrelenting opposition - which was sufficient to change forever the heart of Russia. The work is submitted with the belief that the Russian spiritual soil has been cultivated by decades of hardship and struggle. They believe that the planting of the seed by the 'Gospel Christians' movement described in the book will finally result in an unparalleled harvest in Russia during the third millennium."

I found this book greatly encouraging for the prospects of a proliferation of raw New Testiment Christianity in Russia. Although they warn about the lionizing of Pashkov and Prokhanov, it is extremely helpful and enlightening to closely study their experience evangelizing Russia. This book is a must read for anyone doing or supporting Christian misson work in Russia. Also, of great importance, this book is short, fast moving, and easy to read at 220 pages. The authors give the important facts without getting bogged down on tangents. The time for Russia is NOW!!!!! The window of opportunity has been open for arguably 30 years of Russia's 2000 year history. GET INVOLVED!!! I question whether the West's track record since the fall of the Berlin Wall should be judged in terms of accomplishment or opportunity squandered!!! Are you willing to set on the sidelines and let this opportunity go by???

Making Spanish Fun
I am in a Spanish Class at my highschool, and I really think that the Paso a Paso Writing Audio Video Book is a good one. This book combines excercises based on a CD and excercises in the book. There is also a short video whose plot has to do with a chapter we've just studied. One of the advantages of this book is that using it involves both reading and listening to Spanish. In one excersise, we listened to a pretend recording of people in a hotel who were calling to ask for wake-up calls at certain times and what they'd have for breakfast. Then we had to write down in a chart in the book what each person wanted, and when they'd wake up. This book is very helpful and an interactive way to learn.

FROM CANCER PAIN TO HEADACHES: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO YOU
Doctor Eric Chevlen and attorney Wesley Smith have teamed up to write this fast moving and fascinating book about pain and its relief. From cancer pain to headaches, from fibromyalgia to sickle cell crisis, from shingles to multiple sclerosis, Power over Pain covers it. Chevlen and Smith translate into everyday language the complexities of a vast array of treatments -- long-acting opioids, everyday nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, sophisticated spinal infusion pumps, surgical procedures, even therapeutic radio nucleotides and a host of other treatments. Facing the problem of pain squarely, they discuss the side effects as well as the advantages of the many treatments available. Their writing is not only comprehensible; it is both accurate and interesting.

Along with providing knowledge needed to gain power over pain, Chevlen and Smith convey a message of compassion and confidence. For those with a life threatening illness, the message is clear: no one needs to die in unrelieved suffering. For those with less threatening, but equally painful conditions, there is also help. This is a book about the wonderful help available and how to go about getting it.

Wonderful Prayer Aid
Tonight there was a brief but powerful prayer time at a Christian gathering where Wesley Campbell spoke. He had everyone take this book of Bible prayers and walk around in a circle, praying aloud the prayers. A great idea for corporate or personal use!
While the print is not tiny, I would suggest publication of larger print editions for Baby Boomer use in dim meeting places. :)

The Marriage of Parachurch, Church, and Denomination?
It is time to take a new and unprejudiced look at the parachurch and its relationship to church and denomination. This book makes a great contribution to this effort!

North America is estimated to have more than 350,000 congregations. Alongside these congregations, there are estimated to be as many as 100,000 parachurch organizations.

This book talks about the dramatic reshaping of the North American religious world that is happening through an ever increasing and ever growing collection of parachurch organizations. This is the "only book to look at the parachurch movement as a whole and describe what it is, where it came from, how it operates, who supports it, and what its future is likely to be." [xiv]

The research that led to this book uncovers the movement's roots and clarifies the boundaries of the parachurch. The book is divided into four sections: What is the parachurch and why is it thriving? Who makes up the parachurch? How can the parachurch enlarge its impact? Where is the parachurch headed?

An increasing percentage of services bought or used by congregations will come from the parachurch world rather than the denominational world. Denominations may actually broker many of these parachurch services. However, congregations are also willing to go directly to parachurch organizations to receive desired services. This book will either open up your eyes to this reality, or confirm what you have already knew about this reality.

favors the theory of a 4th century recension
This is a scolarly presentation of the viewpoint that a recension took place in the fourth century produced by Lucian of Antioch which incorporated hundreds (if not thousands) of textual changes in the New Testament. It is the author's opinion that the Majority Text, or Textus Receptus, is made up basically of 5th through 14th century copies of this recension, and therefore the text does not represent the original wording of the Greek New Testament. The author argues that the concept that the church loses the original Word of God and then recovers it falls in line with the biblical concept of recovery.

This thesis is, of course, contrary to that of the proponents of the Majority Text, who believe that God has always preserved a true rendering of his Word throughout the entire church age. Majority Text proponents feel that there is either not enough evidence to support the idea of a fourth century recension, or they feel that thousands of manuscripts should not be summarily dismissed as evidence simply on the grounds that some (or many) believe there was a fourth century recension.

The author argues for the superiority of the Alexandrian text over the Lucian text and feels that those older (Alexandrian) manuscripts be given more weight than the erroneous, though more numerous, majority Text manuscripts.

The author's viewpoint is well argued and although a knowledge of Greek would be definitely advantageous to a study of this book, its main points can be easily understood even with no language background. Recommended reading.

Very helpful and motivating
After years of reading books that reference Christian writers like Clement and Bernard of Clairvaux, this Cliff Notes style booklet provided just what I needed -- an introduction to classic Christian references from the Didache to Billy Graham. It stimulated my interest enough to read Watchman Nee and Bonaventure, Andrew Murray and Sheldon. This has provided quite a boost to my devotional life and day-to-day fellowship with the Lord.
