From the publisher's blurb...
"In this valuable resource for African students and indigenous preachers and missionaries, the author explains the importance of preaching in Africa by using African historical, cultural and traditional imagery in order to communicate the gospel more effectively. This book provides insight into the value of indigenous preaching, imagery, and concepts (rather than missionary-given Western forms) and offers a vision for preaching in Africa for the next millennium." This book was the book of the week pick for CMDNet (August 12, 2001)

A good, high-level introduction without much math
I used this text for a distance-learning economics class I took this year. It was an excellent conceptual introduction. Reading it would allowed you to teach yourself a bit about Microeconomics, if you so desire.

In particular, the concepts are explained clearly and succinctly. The authors use a variety of metaphors to daily life that are understandable to practically any adult. The book makes Micro interesting and relatable.

The summary points at the end of each chapter (as well as the key points highlighted in bold lettering throughout the text) allow you to review quickly. There are a lot of good practice problems although the answers are not included in the text.

Overall, I recommend the book highly. My only complaint is that the book is not particularly quantitative or mathematical. That is a strength, in that the book is more easily understandable, but it is also a weakness in that very quantitative people are sometimes left hanging, wanting a mathematical proof of a particular concept.

Very good book in Public Economics
I am using this book for an Introductory Public Financ/Economics Course. I find the book quite easy to follow. The concepts and wording are very easy to follow. The graphs are quite clear and informative.

One does need the basic concepts/tools of microeconomics. Such as indifference curves, edgeworth boxes, basic supply/demand, slopes, etc. The summary at the end of each chapter I find very helpful as do the questions at the end of the book.
Overall a good book, worth a recommendation.

Roots of Western Civilization: From the Enlightenment to the 1980's
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1983)
Author: Wesley D. Camp
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $8.95
Average review score:

A valuable supplement to teaching modern history.
I have used the Camp book for Western Civilzation classes for years. Its excerpts are succinct and provide a realism to history that timelines and texts of events cannot provide. They allow for student exploration at the best level...from the words of the history makers and observers of the time. There are many such books on the market, but Camp's book is well suited to adult education and degree programs oriented toward working students. Camp's selection of readings can support any European history course, and provide an excellent basis for discussion and debate.

Salem Witch Trials: Alliance Project #1
Published in Unknown Binding by Pocket Books (February, 2003)
Author: Kathryn Wesley

Honest and Scarily True
I won't say much because it might expose what the book's really about. See, it's about the Salem Witch Trial and how terrifying they were. When I read about these events in the history pages, you've no idea how similar this book is to the facts and how muchyour opinion of the actual event comes to change. You start with the tragic Putnam family--the daughter from this household one of the afflicted. Then there is the "sinnful" reverend with more thoughts of lust and power than his own wife and child. THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS end with a historical note of those executed and those too luckey to die froim the tragedy that would rock Salem Town.
I will say to you that this book isn't a five star perfect ten kind of book, however for a very non-fictional/ his.-fictional book I honestly couldn't put it down. Overall: a definite buy! It was entertaining and had romance/drama deep within it. All ytou have to do is look at what actualy happened :o)

The Splendid Five: A True Story About the Splinter Fleet in the Pacific During Wwii
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (October, 2000)
Author: Wesley E. Hall
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

The Splendid Five, a splendid book
A splendid story about WWII! Wesley has a gift for dialog and character building. His book reads like a novel as he finds himself in a safe backwater trying to get into the war. His antics are reminiscent of Catch 22 as two old salts get him into all kinds of trouble which leads to their being assigned to Splendid Five, a pre-WWI wooden ship shorter in length than the wingspan of a B-29. It was a subchaser "built to chase submarines but which could not defend herself from one."

Splendid Five and her sister ships were assigned to the Army to support MacArther's island hopping campaign to the Philippines. It starts in a light-hearted way but rapidly becomes grim as they enter their first battle off Pelelui*. The author got his first kill but learned: "Death for us would never hold the terrors it once had for we had seen it up close and knew it for what it was: The inevitable calling in of one's number."

We...were delighted when they spotted a Kilroy Was Here sign on the beach where " . . . no American could have done that and no Jap would do it . . . " He never explained how it got there.

A splendid read indeed. Don't miss it!

*Editor's note:"Bloody Peleui" cost nearly 2000 American lives and eight thousand wounded.

To prepare for these landings at Pelelui, Halsey's TF38 started a softening up campaign. Four TBFs off the light carrier San Jacinto took off to strike the radio station at Chichi Jima in the Bonins. A young, unknown Lt (j.g.) got shot down but was picked up by the American submarine, Finback. The Lieutenant's name was George H. Bush.

Susanna, mother of the Wesleys
Published in Unknown Binding by Hodder & Stoughton ()
Author: Rebecca Lamar Harmon
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Sheds light on 18th century English family customs.
Susanna Wesley(1669-1742) was beautiful and indomitable. Samuel, her husband, an Anglican divine, was scholarly and, at times, impractical. Together they had nineteen children, only nine of whom survived to adulthood. Best known were the boys: Samuel, Jr., Charles, and, of course, the founder of Methodism, John. Virtually unknown were the girls: Emilia, Susanna, Mary, Mehetabel, Martha, and Kezziah. Altogether they formed one of the most remarkable families of the eighteenth century.

Rebecca Harmon does a creditable job telling the story of the family as well as describing Susanna Wesley's influence. From the day she and her husband moved into the Epworth parsonage until her death, Susanna is portrayed as a woman of uncommon spiritual, intellectual, and physical strength, albeit within what must have been for her the sometimes confining social constraints of 18th century England. Read about Susanna's novel approach to home schooling, and how she and Samuel provided for the family on a country parson's penurious income. Read, too, of the differences between Samuel and Susanna concerning the raising of their daughters. In short, Susanna: Mother of the Wesleys is a splendid book deserving to be read as much for the light it sheds on 18th century family customs as for its contribution to Methodist history.

Time Management Handbook for Librarians
The Time Management Handbook for Librarians provides many valuable time management techniques and tips for library professionals. The author, Wesley Cochran, is a law library director and has taught time management workshops for librarians. The end result is a book that does a good job of taking time management techniques and applying them to libraries.

This time management handbook does not only cover personal time management techniques, but it covers techniques for working with others, and techniques for library administrators. The last two chapters briefly describe balancing career with ones personal life and how to implement a time management plan.

The focus is not so much on saving time as it is to decide ahead of time what goals are most important to accomplish. Having goals and objectives in place librarians can then create a daily plan of action that allows them to work on high priority items first. This will help librarians avoid time wasters such as procrastination, taking on too much, and not being able to say no. Other good tips mentioned were setting aside uninterrupted quiet time everyday, deciding which time of day you are most productive, how to plan effective meetings, and how to delegate effectively.

The Time Management Handbook does what other time management books don't, apply time management to a library setting. However, this book does not explain how to implement a time management plan in great detail. Concepts of planning, goal setting, and implementing time management techniques are not mentioned in depth. Instead the book provides a helpful framework for effective time management.

Almost as good as there
Rich, beautiful photographs are a trademark of Arizona Highways travel guides and Stocker's book is no exception. It will not disappoint. The photographic tours give you a real feel for the land and will help you focus (or perhaps expand) your trip. And if you can't find the time or money to actually get down to Arizona for a while this is almost as good as being there.
