Family Science

The complexities of Family Science simplified
I have studied Family Science for several years and have many times become frustrated with the complexities involved in abstract ideas such as the theories and vocabulary used by family scientists. Wesley Burr's book is a wonderful text for both the advanced family researcher and those who simply want to better understand their own family, why they are the way they are, and what they can do to help overcome problems or unhealthy traditions that have been passed on for generations. Burr uses simplistic language to describe in detail complex ideas. He uses tons of examples and illustrations and gives the reader a feel of "oh, that reminds me of my family!" I felt it was an excellent book, and after having read it, I felt like I had come away with vast amounts of useful new knowledge.

Engaging, compelling, and highly recommended reading
Fighting For Public Justice: Cases And Trial Lawyers That Made A Difference is an impressive compendium describing the attorneys and cases that won, or were finalists, for the annual Trial Lawyer of the Year Award, which is presented to those attorneys who have made the greatest contribution to the public interest within the last year by trying or settling a precedent-setting case. Filled with stories of lawyers do not go to court merely for money or self-interest, but to protect and defend the weak and the indigent, Fighting For Public Justice is engaging, compelling, and highly recommended reading in the field of law and social justice.

See it burn
"How I Became a Poet"

"Wanted" was the word I chose

for him at age eight, drawing the face

of a bad guy with comic-book whiskers

then showing it to my mother. This was how

after my father left us, I made her smile

at the same time I told her I missed him,

and how I managed to keep him close by

in that house of perpetual anger,

becoming his accuser and his devoted

accomplice. I learned by writing

to negotiate between what I had,

and that more distant thing I dreamed of.

In this poem, Wesley McNair crystallizes what has been going on in his poetry for two decades. He is a poet of witness to his own closed-in coming of age in a poor, fractious family. He looks outward to an American popular culture whose offer of limitless possibility must be viewed with skepticism. In this outer world, you think you can tell the bad guys by their "comic-book whiskers," but it isn't necessarily so. More often than not, what you see and hear turns out to be a trick. The trick can be crude and obvious, like a weight-loss ad, but it also comes in the grander schemes of Madison Avenue and Ronald Reagan.

A fine book by an all-American poet, closing with a beautiful long narrative (the title poem) that is a fitting sequel to McNair's haunting "My Brother Running."

IMAGINATIVE, CREATIVE BOOK FOR CHILDREN
Like Eure's novel "Red Wings of Christmas," "Fish Out of Water" is a creative and imaginative story for children (albeit a younger age group than that for "Red Wings." Eure, a former soap opera and children's program actor, has a competent writing style that is buoyed by his obvious delight in telling a story. One can only hope that Eure will continue to write more books for children--and continue transporting us to the magical worlds inside his imagination

The perfect parallel to overcoming obstacles in childhood
I was given this book as a very young child and read it so many times that my copy is crumbling. The story is simple enough for a child to understand and the illustrations are unbelievable for any horse and children's book enthusiast. The way its lesson is presented is so effective that it actually has an influence on my life to this day. It is a precious out-of-print book that is worth the search!

The only book from my preschool days that I still own!
A wonderful picture book! Wesley Dennis' artwork is enchanting in the the story of Flip, the curious colt who dreams he can fly. Indeed, it was this book that caught Marguerite Henry's eye in her quest for an artist to illustrate her first book about horses, Album of Horses. Thus was born, in my opinion, one of the greatest pairings of children's author and illustrator.

The world lost one of its best animal illustrators with the passing of Wesley Dennis...
