Charming twist on a well-known story
A tale told in rhyme, with colorful illustrations, in which the three little pigs' much more adventurous sister pulls her scaredy-cat brothers out from under the shadow of the wolf. Pre-schoolers will love the exciting new character. My son has enjoyed this story many times.

An excellent book for young girls or PC little boys as well!
This is one of my favorite children's books. In rhyme, the sister of the three little pigs shows them that life is more than just "sitting and waiting", that there are "things to be making"! She shows them that their fears are groundless and gets them out of their house and off having adventures -- as she does! It is an excellent book for all little children, with a girl as the heroine, very much in the spirit of today's women.

Very Nice book by Mr. Hume
The quality of the book is unsurpassed, beautiful photographs of the pottery items. The book even has two built in ribbon bookmarks, something rarely seen these days. Hume's use of the language has always been amazing to me, he writes very well, and always has. His colorful career is reflected in his writing, and the collection of artifacts from GB. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Colonial American or British archeology, or pottery from the past centuries. "Bravo" to the Chipstone Foundation and Ivor Noel Hume!

An autobiography masquerading as a book on pottery.
Being quite familiar with much of Noel Hume's previous output, I was bowled over by both the size and scope of his most recent endeavor. In addition, the quality of the illustrations and reproduction make this book one of the great values in publishing today. His stories of discovery with his late wife Audrey are tender and illuminating, both in terms of the way he has lived his life and in the way he teaches.
Much of the subject matter involves areas of ceramics used in America; ceramics that, while popular, have still remained below the scope of most academic study. The photos by Gavin Ashworth add considerably to the beauty as well as the information transmitted in this essential volume.

Excellent Introduction to Particle Physics
This book is an excellent introduction to particle physics. The chapters are short, clear and very readable. As the previous reviewer mentioned, there are a series of reasonable exercises at the end of each chapter with answers provided in the back of the book. Many concepts that field theory or particle physics books leave mysterious or have a difficult time explaining are clearly laid out in this book. I would judge it superior to Griffiths particle physics book, and if you are looking for a nice supplement to serious study of quantum field theory, this is it.

An excellent introduction to particle physics
This is indeed an excellent book in particle physics. It will serve as a good introduction to gauge fields of particle physics.
The book is very readable and does not assume more than undergraduate physics. Each chapter ends with a set of problems with solution at the end of the book. It contains a lot of material which can be learned in a short time. I strongly recommend it for a beginner.

Leaderhsip development at its best
The leadership engine is a book that every business leader must read!, and those striving for leadership improvement, I received the book as part of a transformation process in my company. I was greatly inspired by the first few pages and kept on reading and reading. This book focuses on specific leadership issues and gives you insight into some of the greatests Leaders stories. The TPoV (Teachable point of view) is the best concise framework I have seen for leadership development, I actually teach it to working teams in the company I work for. Then the handbook for revolutionaries gives you the opportunity to further reflect on the books topics and start developing your own leadership skills. I recommend reading the book throughly and then keeping it handy for future reference and to improve your skills.

The Leadership Engine - a quick, motivating read

This handbook is based on the book The Leadership Engine by Noel Tichy and Eli Cohen. This handbook's premise is that leaders can be made and nurtured at every level of the company. Leaders need to spend much of their time teaching others. "Great leaders are great teachers." Each chapter contains simple exercises to get you thinking about your business, your competitors, your ideas, your values, and your energy. Companies without this strategy might disappear in this ever changing market.

Well-written Book about Solo, the Electric Car
I first found this book in the library, and after returning it three weeks later, I was drawn back to check it out again. This is the only book of its kind, and made me want to immediately take a vacation--whether in an electric car or not! Perrin's journey takes him across America with Solo, his converted Ford Escort wagon, and he writes about a good portion of American culture, right down to his thrill to spend only $21 for a night in a hotel in Utah. He writes about all the questions posed him, the curiosities that were too irresistible to pass up, such as how expensive are the solar panels, what is the car's range, is it expensive to convert a regular car, and so on. Although Perrin's book is already over eight years old (and I was saddened to see that it is out of print), it is clear there has been some progress since the electric cars that basically had only one power source that was cheap, reliable and had a reasonable life expectancy, albeit a dangerous one: lead-acid batteries. I would feel uncomfortable sitting on top of (or near) 800 pounds of sulfuric acid. Solo has a limited range, only 150 miles a day and can only get up to about 65 MPH. The drawbacks come when accessories must be used: heater, lights, and defogger. I wouldn't have the patience to drive such a car, but maybe driving such a car would teach me patience.

I loved this book! Perrin makes nonfiction as literature an art, and breathes new life into travel writing. His book is very helpful in itself about a good, consistent writing style, and I love it when the writer takes me to the places he visits: sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and so on. In that sense, "Life With an Electric Car" has no equal yet, and the author knows it. If you can find this book, buy it and keep it. Perrin's book is like a good drink that is sipped, not gulped down. Read it slowly. You may begin to think that the days of gasoline powered cars are numbered. That they are. Highly recommended for readers 14 and over.

The joys and trials of living with an electric car.
Noel Perrin is a professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College. He had a moment of enlightenment when a student asked him how he traveled the thirteen miles to class that morning. "I drove in, in my gas-guzzling, air polluting farm truck," he admitted. Then began his quest to find a vehicle more consistent with his beliefs and his profession. He acquired Solo, a Ford Escort converted into a battery-powered, solar-panel-assisted electric car with a range of nearly sixty miles (on level ground on a warm day).

Perrin's adventures with Solo are in the best tradition of the "travelin' across America" genre. We share his frustration as he realizes that he can't make it up and over Donner Pass, and abandons his coast-to-coast drive to bring Solo home from California. (He buys a pickup truck to tow "him" - Solo is male.) We watch his chagrin as he realizes that his new truck/car caravan can't back up - not even a few feet - and he has to select motels, restaurants, and gas stops based on the shape of their parking spaces. We worry with him the first time he drives after dark; how fast will his headlights drain the batteries? Back at home, we cheer as the college gives him his own personal outlet next to a reserved parking space.

Perrin's attention to detail adds to the pleasure. He doesn't just state Solo's mileage range and charging time; he spells out the cost in time, worry, and inconvenience. School is thirteen miles away, and he can recharge the car during classes. His wife has her own separate home forty-six miles away - a little too far for comfort, especially with hills and cold weather making extra demands on his seventeen batteries. Perrin gives a detailed analysis of the "cradle-to-grave" pollution costs of owning Solo vs. owning a gasoline-powered car. He contends that Solo costs society virtually nothing - especially since he started to recharge "him" from a series of solar panels.

Three chapters have been added to the expanded paperback edition. These bring us up to date on the latest in electric vehicle technology and the evolution of the field.

This is a most enjoyable and informative book. It left me with a rather surprising urge to rush right out and buy an electric car!

Completely different from existing marketing texts
I have read and taught my share of marketing texts and I spend a lot of time on consulting and executive education. So I was not prepared to find much new in this book. But it lives up to the promises of the authors in the introduction; it is completely different from existing texts. Most of all, the book is normative. The authors come right out and tell you what they think and how you should apply the knowledge contained in the book. Most texts contain too many lists of things ("five different types of wholesale institutions") that are great for professors, including myself, who want to give a multiple choice exam, but do very little for a managerwho needs information. This book is great if you need information and intellectual support to make marketing decisions. It also has some excellent philosophical content. I think Chapter 3 on its own is worth the price of the book and much more. You may think you know what it means to have a market focus. After reading that chapter carefully, you will have to admit you did not actually know what it meant. The numerous examples of what an 'external orientation' actually implies for the firm will give you a multitude of inspiring ideas to take back to your firm.

This is a really forward looking marketing textbook
Capon and Hulbert's experience and expertise shine through this book. They have long taught Columbia's MBAs and executive programs so it is not surprise that they have brought it so readably together in this single volume. Like any other comprehensive textbook it is too long to read straight through. I intended mostly to skim but also dive into selected passages but found myself hooked and glad of it. I particularly liked its modern, forward looking attitude.

This is absolutely not the 4Ps dressed up with some e-business. Capon and Hulbert revisit the fundamentals of what marketing will be and each chapter has a neat table comparing "new way" with "old way". It is also packed with real examples and their website addresses. All marketers should keep this book by their desks and turn to the relevant chapter as issues arise.
