Mathematical Beginnings: Problem Solving for Young Children
As the title suggests, this book is about problem solving. It provides much in the way of helping students meet the California State Mathematical Reasoning Standards. It is also one of few books dealing with this topic that can actually be used with kindergartners. It has great ideas for other primary grades as well.

It is a versatile book, providing activities for use with interlocking cubes and cuisenaire rods, as well as with familiar fairytales, leaves and collection jars. The activities interest young children, provide them with challenges to solve, require active participation and encourage math as communication. The activities are open-ended and encourage pupils and teachers to form the habit of asking questions that further the ideas involved in the activities.

I was introduced to this book by our District Math Coach who highly recommended it.

Terrific historical adventure novel
The Mohawk Ladder is a true classic account of the conflict between England and France in the 1750's. I read this book while stationed in Germany years ago, then found it again and read it a second time. Great characters, massive battles, intrique, some nifty dialog and fast paced tale of a group of American's fighting with the French. Vicious Indian ambushes, narrow escapes, the advent of land mines in combat and the unique introduction of the "Mohawk Ladder" by these hardy Americans while assaulting a fortified citadel. Grand old fashioned adventure. Check it out for good writing and an excellent and rarely told story. Good stuff.

A GEM!
This book is an absolute treasure. I read it when I was just barely beginning my return to Christianity through my strong interest in the Celtic/Irish form. This man and his words greatly moved me, and in the right direction. I look forward to re-reading this in the years to come.

Mr. Fluxus: A Collective Portrait of George Maciunas 1931-1978
Published in Hardcover by Thames & Hudson (1998)
Authors: Emmett Williams, Ann Noel, and Ay-O
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

A definitive depiction of the life and times of G. Maciunas
Emmett William's Mr Fluxus is a collective portrait of the founder of the Fluxus group. Maciunas was a typographer, visual designer, teacher and organizer. He was a constant source of ideas, and worked tirelessly to produce them. At various times now famous artists such as Beuyes, Ono and Paik joined a loose band of others. They participated in FluxFests, produced FluxGames and objects and sold them in FluxShops. His FluxHouses were among the seeds of today's SOHO. Among the ironies of his life , is that many of his ideas have led to financial success for others, while he lived a spartan life and suffered financial disasters. The book is a collective of anonymous quotes as Fluxus was a collective. The quotes are attributed at the end, but the form si sometimes confusing. Williams and Ay-O have produced a valuable document for scholars and art lovers. They had the advantage of being insiders with access to many who might not choose to cooperate, and to know many others who might be too obscure. They also spoke to artists while they were still alive about Fluxus. Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Peter Moore and Dieter Roth are no longer available to us. The book presents George Maciunas in all of his complexity. Fluxus has had a role in the genesis of Performance art and Conceptual art. This book will help us remember him in his context.
