a gem
This is the story-- in a fictionalized form-- of the woman who was nannie to Noel Streatfeild's father and his siblings as well as to herself, her siblings and cousins before and at the turn of the last century. It gives a very real and moving picture of the life of service that very young girls of the rural lower class were expected to enter and is highly recommended if you can find it somewhere.

To be read again and again
A WONDERFUL BOOK, recounts of childhood days and growing up middle-class in a tropical paradise. It is all about growing up in pre-independence Georgetown - Guyana, with it's special querky social mores, of blissfully flying kites at Easter, celebrating and enjoying Christmas, enjoying summer holidays in the country, playing cricket, the rainy season, attending Queen's College, sneaking out to that first fete, and of so many things that are important (and unimportant) to a any Guyanese boy. At that age, that time, that place - Life was sweet!!
This book is the perfect gift for friendship, parenting, for any occasion. Oh, go ahead and treat yourself to a copy.

HERE LIES VIRGINIA
Ivor Hume has delved into the rather murky historical past of the Virginia Colonies. Instead of taking the traditional route of authors on this subject, Hume exposes life as it must have been through extensive historical and archaeological research. The book contains intriguing new data, little known fact, and a full discourse on the importance of preservation for America's historical past. It is strongly recommended to anyone with even a slight interest in early American archaeology.

A different version of the Night Before Christmas.
What would a night before christmas be if their were no reindeer, only bears? And Santa Claus's name wasn't Santa, but Sainty? If it took place in a cabin? It would be a Hillbilly Night before christmas!! A great book!

Pleasurable
This book is an excellent overview of the history of tile art. I a particularly interested in Islamic tile art, and the chapter in here is informative and contains excellent illustrations. In fact, the whole book is laden with beautiful illustrations.
Also delightful is a 17th century Dutch tile panel depicting the workings of a tile factory.
For anyone interested in this art form, I can recommend this as an excellent introduction.

A wonderful comfort for those who have suffered a loss
This is an excellent book to give or receive! The sub-title In the light of loss - gives insight to the beautiful poems and prayers contained inside. I found this book to be of great comfort and hope. The paintings by Nancy Noel are magnificant.

Invaluable Resource for Plant Identification
This illustrated companion to the classic Gleason & Cronquist is a "must-have" for anyone who needs clear, concise line drawings to help understand fine distinctions between species. Although expensive, it's a terrific reference that will become a classic. You will use it often and you won't regret spending the money. Caution: it's a big volume and very heavy; don't plan on carrying it along in the field.
