A fascinating, engaging, candid, informative autobiography.
Effie Marquess Carmack (1885-1973) grew up in the tobacco-growing region of southern Kentucky known as the Black Patch. She married at an early age and, because of economic necessity and religious commitments, moved with her husband to Utah, back to Kentucky, then to Arizona, and finally to California. Along the way she became committed to preserving the rural, southern folkways she had experienced as a child. She became a folk poet and self-taught artist. In the 1940s she began writing her autobiography. Effie's story is a charming memoir of her spirited childhood on a poor tobacco farm. She describes a wide variety of folk practices from healing and crafts to children's games. A convert to the Mormon Church, her account of southern Mormon missions contributes to the little-known record of the Mormon church's attempts to establish a presence in the South. Out Of The Black Patch is a fascinating, engaging, candid, informative autobiography.

A Fabulous Book With A Great Dialogue!
Bill Hosokawa remind us that history must not repeat itself nor be forgotten; that is, placing Japanese Americans in concentration camps during the out break of World War II. "Out of the Frying Pan" explains and exemplifies the true meaning of being an American of Japanese descent, while overcoming racial discrimination in the land of the free. This book must be read by those who believe in the true colors of red, white and blue.

Funnier even than the English version!
I absolutely love Raymond Briggs, and Father Christmas (or the Spanish equivalent--Papá Noel) is no exception. This book is a MUST for any Spanish speaking (even comprehending), Christmas-celebrating child. Adults will also find the portrayal of a gruff, REAL man hilarious.

A gem
It is rare that scholars of religion respond to the ideas of Campbell with fairness and depth of thought. This book is worth reading, its contributors great thinkers all, each of whom is able to place "the power of myth" into a greater perspective.

A great vegetarian cookbook from the Bloodroot Collective
This is the third feminist vegetarian cookbook published by the Bloodroot Collective. There is a myth that vegetarian cooking is bland and therefore boring. The recipes from any books of this series quickly dispell that notion. This book is divided into sections by season, each section including soups, salads, and entrees. The recipes may all be meatless and often without dairy, but the results are very satisfying. The scope is international. A Russian soup called Chlodnik is one of the simplest and best recipes I've found for an quick summer soup. Their spinach pesto is another easy, satisfying dish. And a vegetarian version of Szekely goulash is a healthier take on a Hungarian classic which includes a wonderful, though rich cabbage strudel. Not all of the recipes are as easy as the ones I have mentioned, but you are likely to find some, if not many, that you will want to make over and over.

Pioneering Aviation
This is the wonderful true story of one of the great aviation pioneers of the twentieth century. Noel Wien was a young midwestern farm boy in the early nineteen hundreds who's love of flying began the moment he saw his first biplane. In the early 1920's, he became one of the first bush pilots in Alaska and his accomplishments and skill as a pilot soon became legendary. He flew everything from trapper's pelts to the mail and was the "first" to land a plane in many of the most remote areas in the Alaskan wilderness. More than once, he was forced to put his plane down in severe weather and "walk" back to civilization. All of this was accomplished using very primitive maps and no real landing facilities. Wien became an expert at landing his plane on sandbars in river beds. He eventually got to the point where he had a map of the many mountains and rivers in his head and his instincts as a pilot saved him many times. He was a pilot "for hire" who could be depended on to deliver much needed news and supplies to just about anywhere in the wild. What made his exploits as a pilot even more extraordinary was the fact that in those early days of aviation he was doing all of his flying in open cockpit aircraft in severe and sub-freezing temperatures. Navigation was done strictly by vision and he would only fly when his instincts told him he could make it to his destination. He was the first to discover the wreckage of the plane that killed Will Rogers and Wiley Post and he flew a legendary new route across the Canadian rockies to deliver the photographs of that ill fated flight to the newspapers in Seattle. Wien's accomplishments grew through the years and he eventually started Wien Alaskan Airways. His love and dedication to his craft helped to open up the Alaskan wilderness and make it so accessible today. If you love adventure and the pioneering spirit, this is the book to read.
