not just for game programmers
A 'best practices for C++' type of book using small snippets of code to illustrate the points. There is a lot here that can be applied to any type of C++ development. Makes a good addition to your Effective C++ and Design Patterns(GOF) books. You do own those, right?

The landmark work on the California condor
Noel and Helen Snyder have done an incredible job, of capturing the history of the condor, its biology and much of the essence of the politics of high-profile endangered species recovery. While this meticulously researched book that will fulfill a scientist's needs for accuracy and detail, they have managed to relate that information with a personal touch that provides the lay reader with the sense of the adventure that the authors are recounting. They have tiptoed through a political mine field to bring out the stories and facts so necessarily missed or mis-understood by the media and distant observors. While many books are available on the condor, not since Carl Koford's work in the 50's has someone so close to this species told its story.

Chavasse: Double Vc

Author: Ann Clayton

Biography of Britain's most highly decorated soldier of WW1
Anne Clayton has had unprecedented access to the Chavasse family papers to put together this excellent book about Captain Chavasse's life. He won a Military Cross in 1915, his first Victoria Cross during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and was posthumously awarded his second VC for actions at the opening of the 3rd Battle of Ypres in 1917. The book describes his life, hopes and loves and fears and gives a very good picture of what an educated professional thought and felt in the early years of this century.

Pilgrimage among the nations of Europe
Lord Byron travels in Europe from Portugal to Spain, then to Italy and Greece, then to the Ardennes and the Alps, to Switzerland and Venice and Rome. He beholds the war-torn Europe after Napoleon and is a witness to the emerging nationalism of all nations. He blends his song of independence for all countries or peoples into a long and rich song of nature that mixes historical references, mythological recollections and all other connections he deems natural and useful to give universality and even some kind of a new power coming from the faith in the ability of men to free themselves and to reach up to the realisation of their potentials. The form is also very engaging : a ballad with some songs here and there. The rhythmic and rhyming patterns are fluid and delicate and Lord Byron reaches a rare power and, should I say, finesse in the use of the form. We nearly get an epic, or at least an epic in the making, and this strong tone is ever present in the poem.

I'm sure I'll come back to it many times
I've been reading astrological books for several years now and this is one ot the two best out of fifty. What impresses me is the fact that in the book written by nine people, each having a different approach to astrological counseling, there is no single sentence or thought which contradicts anything else in the book. In a field of astrology we could find contradictions produced by one author in one and the same book. Another thing - any counselor could combine any or all of these techniques with his own succesfully. Deep thoughts are expressed simply - although English isn't my mother tongue, I could read it without using a dictionary. My congratulations and thanks to Mr.Tyl for putting together the essence of counseling work of some of the best astrologers in the world.

to be as good as the best in the world
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....that seems to be the culture in many organisations. Left to themselves, people will ignore warnings of danger and scorn opportunities to change early and with minimum of pain. This book relates how the cultural phenomenon was changed in General Electric (GE), one of America's largest and highly successful blue-chip corporation. This transformation or change revolution was brought about by the never-ending energy of its CEO, Jack Welch. The book successfully highlights some of Welch's thoughts and key considerations as he went about revolutionising GE. The book contains some valuable lessons for all managers who are attempting to drive change in their respective organisations.

Want to know mail order sources for the above, or any other edible plant you've ever heard of, and literally thousands new to you? This astonishing work of scholarship does not include recipes, but adventurous cooks will be able to deduce them from the compressed notes of actual uses by peoples ranging from Inuit to French, modern and ancient. Excellent for U-grads AND Graduate students
Noel Smith does an excellent job in catagorizing the various dsciplines of psychology into various centricities. The text begins with a fairly comprehensive historical overview of how psychology has become so disjointed in modern times. Each system is then discussed, with summaries at the end of each chapter, as well as a critiqued and strengths section. The summary chapter at the end of the text really help the reader pull together each of the 10 systems highlighted throughout the text. For the brave of heart, Prof. Smith includes an appendix that lists postulates, protopostulates, and metapostulates of each of the systems. This appendix provides much fodder for discussion to those aligned and loyal to a particular theory. I recommend this text to any serious student of the profession.
