Easy experiments who captivated my 6 years old attention
The book is properly organized with an presentation interesting for a 6 years old and his parents. Experiments are easy to complete and works the first time. It provided many practicle answers to many of my son's questions. Simply reading the book had managed to keep him quiet for 45 minutes while waiting for a doctor appointment. That says it all.

A case study of human survial
Chavez provides a clear unbiased look at the harsh and often dangerous life of undocumented immigrants mainly in Southern California. Chavez engages the reader through accurate portrayals of people who remain on the fringes of American society for fear of deportation. Their stories are moving; their tenacity amazing. North American readers will be reminded of just how protected and sheltered they are by the virture of living in America. A must read for anyone trying to understand the complexities of illegal immigration or in the postion to make policy on the topic.

Shareholder Value Management in Banks
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (March, 2000)
Author: Leo Schuster
Amazon base price: $75.00

How Europeans manage value of their banks
If you're a little bit tired with American-style value management fever you should like this book. It provides an insight into state-of-the-art shareholder value management approaches (M&As, business portfolio management, value chain re-design, RAPM - based capital allocation) but also stresses the stakeholder approach, much more popular in Europe than in the States (especially in continental Europe). You'll find some tips on quality management in banks (specially interesting profitability analysis of quality efforts), measuring customer value added, the Balanced Scorecard model for banks. Numerous examples and case studies make the book even more interesting. Co-operative banks (rarely included in such publications) will also find something for themselves - the Membership Value concept. Taking it all together - I strongly recommend this book.

Such a Peace: The Roots and Ashes of Yalta
Published in Hardcover by New American Library Trade (November, 1982)
Author: C.L. Sulzberger
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $6.65
Collectible price: $8.47
Average review score:

Very Interesting indeed
Well, as I was looking for a concise and accurate account of the Yalta Conference, I stumbled upon this. And I consider it a very lucky find as it is both well-written and informative. The prspective of some thirty years the author (a journalist) has to the described facts gives the work a necessary gravity and (relative) objectivity. There are no assumptions, only hard facts from Sulzberger's own experience (he was in Crimea at the time) and interviews with the Conferences' main and not-so-main participants. What rises it in my opinion even more is the lack of the unfortunately popular national prejudice. A best book on Yalta I've seen (and believe me, I browsed through a couple).

Compared to other astrological guides this is the best!!!
There are some days within the daily guide which have been so exact within past issues, but I found the monthly guide to be more accurate. I am hoping this comment I am sending will be herd and answered so that I may receive information as to where I can buy or even get a personalized monthly reading from Sydney Omarr for the year 1999, as they have not been displayed in the book stores at all this fall.

Thank you, Dawn Tolmacs

Theodore and the Talking Mushroom.
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (November, 1971)
Author: Leo Lionni
Amazon base price: $6.99
Used price: $9.45
Average review score:

Talking `Shrooms?!
If you are looking for another Swimmy or Frederick, or even Alexander, this is NOT it. The usual cute torn-paper mouse illustrations are here, but this is a weird story, and not a very happy one, either. At first I had to wonder what kind of mushroom Leonni was on when he wrote this. The story is about a mouse who finds a mushroom that "talks," or so he thinks, at least at first. Anyway, the cat`s out of the bag, and everyone thinks Theodore must be great because he discovered a mushroom that speaks, moreover, he is the only one who can understand it. Thus begins his dilemma.

I suppose this tale is a good starting point for discussions about verifying ones facts, speaking before thinking, getting carried away, the dilemma of when to speak out the truth despite the terrible outcome and accepting the consequences of one`s actions. Maybe this is not so weird, after all: just not so light-hearted as the aforementioned stories. Theodore learns an important lesson, albeit a rueful one, and the book is not devoid of humour.

Three Stalks of Corn
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (March, 1993)
Author: Leo Politi
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $6.86
Collectible price: $79.41
Average review score:

Three Stalks Of Corn is great for children.
Politi does a great job of conveying a culture that is beautiful and real. The story shows how wonderful family is and how resourceful we can be. It is also educational showing some Spanish words and giving their English meaning. It also demonstrates Mexican cooking and includes a couple of recipes in the back of the book. This book isn't very long and is certainly worth sitting down and reading with your child.

The Titanic Revisited
Published in Paperback by Heidi Cohen (July, 1984)
Author: Leo Cohen
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $3.50
Average review score:

Outstanding combination of technical writing &story telling.
Mr. Cohen, an engineer by profession, reviews the available material at the time of writing this book (early-1980's), and comes to some interesting conclusions about the events of the fatal night, the process of the sinking, and where the ship may be found. Now that the ship WAS found, it appears that he was extremely close. An appendix, written following the Titanic's discovery, furthers the discussion to include the new information.

While the movie has portrayed the sinking in a particular way, Mr. Cohen offers an alternative explanation for the ship having broken in two: namely, that the speed of sinking over-revved the engines, and the boilers blew. An interesting alternative hypothesis!

Mr. Cohen's great contribution is his clear prose, interesting story-telling style, and his ability to communicate difficult maritime technical events to the informed lay-person. I recomend it, and for the price ($5+S/H), it can't beat.
