Matthew : A Devotional Commentary : meditations on the Gospel according to St. Matthew

Strikes the right balance
I have had a hard time trying to find a biblical commentary that is (1) Catholic, (2) devotional, and (3) scholarly. Most commentaries are either too dry and academic, or they are just simplistically devotional in nature. This book I think strikes the right balance. I also like the format - a section of the gospel is printed, then a devotional/commentary follows on that section. With other commentaries, I got tired of going from the top of the page to the footnotes (like in the Navarre and Ignatius commentaries). I'm looking forward to buying the other books in the series, and I hope they continue it to other books in the Bible!

A Companion
It has been several years since I read this book and I am about to purchase my second copy ... my first was autographed by the author whom I had the good fortune to meet several years ago in Washington State. The book is a snapshot of the author's life during the years she shared with a very special cat. Hengan is a fascinating woman, and her story about her exploits while accompanied by the esteemed Max Leo is one that will touch the heart and soul of anyone who has ever regarded a cat (or any other animal for that matter) as a faithful friend and true companion.

Once upon a time in a place called The Bronx
Memories of Laughter & Garlic is a unique collection of beautifully written stories. Each story touches the heart in its own way, paints such a vivid picture of once upon a time in a place called,'The Bronx', that you become totally absorbed in each and every one. I don't have a favorite story from this collection, except to say whichever I happen to be reading at the time is my favorite for that day!
Mennonite Peacemaking: From Quietism to Activism
Published in Paperback by Herald Pr (March, 1994)
Amazon base price: $16.99
Average review score:
Excellent
A very thorough book about the history of peacemaking in the Mennonite denominations. This would be a good reference book as well as a good introduction for the curious. I was unaware before reading this, for example, that there are two different strains of thought within the Mennonites, one of which ("nonresistance") advocates total abstention from government or political activism including abstention from peace activism and marches as much as from oaths and military service, while the other line of thought adheres to a more activist pacifism, including peace marches and working for nuclear disarmament. The majority within the various Mennonite groups have moved from the former position to the latter during the 20th century. This is an excellent study on how and why these changes occured. As somebody who not a Mennonite, but is a Christian with a strong interest in peace issues, I found this book to be a fascinating study of one of the traditionally pacifist Christian denominations.

The Moment of Self-Portraiture in German Renaissance Art

Supreme interpretive scholarship
Joseph Leo Koerner must rank as one of the most able and compelling figures writing in the field of Art History today. As with his previous work on Caspar David Friedrich this work is a masterpiece of interpretative criticism and research. Koerner proceeds always from close readings of individual works, but then sets them at the centre of a nexus of complex philosophical and socio historical questions. He invokes not only the writings of Durer's contemporaries, but such figures as Foucault and Adorno in drawing out the profoundest implications from the works cited. If proof were neeeded that art history can be urgent and disturbing rather than pedantic and arcane, then this book should offer it. As one reaches the end of this book one understands that the complex issues of identity which Durer and his circle grappled with are as vital and disturbing at the turn of the millenium as the were when Durer worked on the brink of the half millenium.

A truly wonderful collection of interviews
"Movies Were Always Magical" is a truly wonderful collection of interviews with 19 Hollywood directors, actors, and producers from the 1930s to the 1950s. Black-and-white photographs and extended notes enhance the commentaries of Pat Boone, Jeff Corey, Kathyrn Grayson, and many, many more of the truly great names from filmmaking of yesteryear. Especially for classic movie buffs, "Movies Were Always Magical" is an impressive and commended addition to any Theatrical Studies and Hollywood History reading list and reference collections.

HE FINDS IT IN THE END
A man who has looked for meaning: in the debauched antics of youth drinking and sex, in his career, in his family, and in his writing. Despite all nothing fills the void and nothing meets the longing in his soul. Until he sees Christ in the poor peasant folk living in St Petersburgh. A very rich read and an example to us all.
My Lord of Belmont: A Biography of Leo Haid
Published in Paperback by Archives of Belmont Abbey (September, 1995)
Amazon base price: $18.00
Average review score:
Fascinating
A fascinating, extremely well-written look at the life of a major figure in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in North Carolina, and while that may seem like a limited audience is available, it is a fascinating biography for any reader interested in a nuanced look at a complex figure, which Leo Haid certainly was. Baumstein, who is a specialist in the life of Haid, brings a compassionate understanding to the life of a man who judged himself not completely successful, despite the raft of accomplishments at his death.
