Broad Brush Watercolor
This book will only be of interest to individuals who are knowledgeable of Judaism. It is a brief rehashing of old ideas, etc. I would summarize it as a broad brush watercolor with a lot of water and not too much pigment.

Jewish Philosophy for Our Time
This book of essays by Leo Strauss is an invaluable collection of works on Jewish thought. Each of the essays are gems in themselves. The introduction to the book by Kenneth Hart Green is particularly enlightening and is a penetrating overview of Strauss' approach to Judaism. In fact, the book provides an excellent source book for anyone searching for a Jewish philosophy for our time.

Nice little book
I guess I need to read it again, but on first examination (and trial) it looks like your basic intro book, which is exactly what I'm interested in. I also bought Mom a copy, since she's not wild about Pilates. If you have an interest in yoga at all, or your friends are telling you that you need it (like mine do) then this is a good place to start. Don't worry about the long foreign words; they're pretty well explained, although you might have to go look them up occasionally.

A Simple Review
I found this book to be one of the best introductions to yoga I have ever encountered. I would recommend this title to anyone with even a passing interest in the subject. I have been involved in yoga my whole life and I felt I was even able to gain some new insight. The descriptions and pictures were so lovely in their layout. And the CD included was just the perfect icing to the cake! Very nice to use with the book or on it's own.

an entertainment of a high sort
The mysterious Marquis that haunts the margins of this historical war drama is a wonderful creation whose real identity remains a mystery to the very end. The book has a fantastic element to it but it is not so far out there to be considered genre fiction. Leo Perutz was admired by Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges among others and writes very literate but also very entertaining books and belongs in that category of writers. You can enjoy the identity mystery(national and personal) and the historical dimension of this as well. It is a fascinating series of events that take place in an equally fascinating time and place(all of Perutz's books do)and it will enlighten you and entertain you with a not too often written about side of the Napoleanic Wars. Mainly the complex ethnic and nationalist and familial loyalties that sometimes created very complex situations. The troops that occupy and garrison themselves in to the strange town where these events occur are in for a series of surprises and so is the reader who will be delighted to have found such a unique kind of book.

a very worthy read of a time gone by with a universal appeal
This is a book I bought for my father at a book clearance sale. It sat around for years, he didn't read it, neither did I, until I made myself sit down, pick it up and give it a go. I am very pleased I did! The dated dust cover put me off an excellent read. It is a historical novel set in the Napoleonic war period. A German regiment fighting under Napoleon is stationed in a Spanish town which guerilla fighters are trying to recapture. The mysterious Marquis de Bolibar attempts to help the guerillas do so as he has just learnt another Bolibar has died fighting for the enemy of Spain and his class, Napoleon. Using cunning tricks exploiting human frailties, the Marquis sets off an explosive train of events that assume legendary qualities, providing the Germans with a number of problems, the reader a few laughs and the authour with our undivided attention. Whether a history or military history buff (which I am not) or just looking for something different to read - this may provide a good deal of enjoyment. Although I was initially put off by a couple of arcane words, this should not be a deterrent, the story is very intriguing and attention-grabbing and these words soon become familiar.

A Spiritual Man for Our Times
I have visited just about every state in the Union, and I am constantly amazed at how many people have heard of Fr. Solanus Casey. A native of Wisconsin, one of 16 children of a devout Irish Catholic family, Fr. Solanus entered the Capuchin Order and spent the rest of his life listening to people's problems and praying for the healing of their bodies and their spirits. His cause for canonization is currently pending in Rome.
Several fine biographies of Fr. Solanus have already been written. "Meet Solanus Casey" is unique in that it is written by one who lived with him in community and was his personal friend, Brother Leo Wollenweber. Brother Leo draws on the rich documentation available about Fr. Solanus, but he also adds so many anecdotes and personal reflections that are not found elsewhere. The result is a warm, intimate portrait of a man who inspired faith in God in so many people. Readers will also appreciate the appendix entitled "Wisdom from Fr. Solanus"--a collection of brief sayings selected from his letters and diaries.
"Meet Solanus Casey" is a gracious introduction to the life of this happy and loving Servant of God.

Really meet Fr. Solanus
This is one of three or four biographies of the Capuchin holy man, but it is far the best for the common reader. It is written by a friar who had a long association with him, and is therefore very personal. You truly feel that you have gotten to know Fr. Solanus as a person, not just as a miracle worker or a phenomenon. The amount of theological discourse is small and never confusing. I am recommending it to all, even to the more sophisticated reader.

I gave it three stars because...
I gave this book three stars because it is the textbook for my sight-singing/dictation class here at college and seeing it on Amazon gave me the creeps simply because that class haunts and consumes me! :) So I guess it's a good book because it's really helped out my sight singing techniques, but still... it frightens me to see this book on Amazon :) I don't think I could look at it unbaised ever again. :)

Review of "A New Approach to Sight Singing"
The authors of this book are simply incredible! It is the greatest tool for sight-reading I have ever seen. There are many things to work on in this book besides reading melodies. This book contains melodies for sight singing, duets, a sing and play section that incorporates piano playing into the sight singing. There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of frequently used musical signs that can help the beginner or the forgetful musician in training. There are exercises of every variety in this book. Exercises are written in all the major and minor keys, including the harmonic and melodic scales, in the treble, alto, and bass clefs, and there are even exercises that revert to the Greek modes. This book is perfect for all sight singers, from the beginner to the most accomplished musician.

voices
This was a difficult book for me to read. It is in the first person style. I can hear their voices. I did an interview three years ago. It is on tape. Yet i can not listen to it.. Such a difficult time in our youth, in our lives. I recommend this book. This one voice speaks for so many.

riveting especially for a child of a holocaust victim
it made quite an impact on me. emotionally draining. how Alina kept her sanity is remarkable. Stark did not try to editorialize. instead as painful as it was, he let her tell it in her own way, regardless of syntax. i have never read anything like it...in only three hours i experienced an unforgettable voice.

Great book!
This is one of the best common-sense books available. No mumbo-jumbo, no mystical nonsense. Instead it offers sensible and practical basic bodybuilding exercises. From a purely bodybuilding perspective however, its easy to find fault, but considering that most martial artists are more concerned with catching flies between chopstix than benchpressing, the text is suitably pitched.

On Tough Woirk-out
This is the best workout book I have ever read or used. Performing the exercises in this book brought me tremendous results in a very short time. The book outlines programs for the beginner and the pro. I highly recommend the use of this book for the serious body builder.

Raid and Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1992)
Author: Leo Tolstoy

Tolstoy at his best
Tolstoy is a masterful writer, and this marvelous collection of his short stories is excellent proof of this. Of the 9 stories contained in the collection, 3 in particular are worth noting: The Raid was an interesting tale of life on the "frontier" of Ukraine - and is not unlike a Louis L'Amour viginette. Tolstoy pulls no punches here, and the line between "good guy" and "bad guy" is blurred. Two Hussars is another favorite of mine, mostly because of the way in which he writes the characters - so real you can imagine meeting them in person in some dimly-lit pub. How Much Land Does a Man Need? is the third short story that resonnated with me, as it wrestles with the typically Russian theme of a man and his attachment to the land, but also with the broader human theme of need versus greed. (Especially resonant in our own time, what with ozone depletion, increased consumption of fossil fuels, and over population.) While the other stories are good, these 3 in particular make the book worth the purchase price. Don't think of it as "Tolstoy" - read it for its own sake - its a thumping good book.

Tolstoy on a smaller, more managable scale.
I was attracted to this volume by Calvino's recommendation of 'Two Hussars', a gorgeous, bipartite story of Turgenev-like transparency, about the respective, mirroring adventures of a father and son, and their relationships with the army, their servants, the local society they briefly enter, and the women they meet.

In one sense it is a tale about history, about the raucous gambling, drinking and dancing of the early 19th century, and the more sedate, stolid bourgeoisification in its middle. The climax, where narrative and character gives way to suspended time and a tableaux of nature, is heartstopping.

The other stories in this collection are similarly schizophrenic, ranging from early works in the 1850s influenced by Tolstoy's time in the army; and the later didactic, moralistic works, including some of his most famous, 'The Death of Ivan Illyich' and 'How much land does a man need?' (which Joyce thought the greatest story ever written).

the translations by Louise and Aylmer Maude, nearly a century old, are still very readable, probably because they were friends of Tolstoy's, and had greatr knowledge of his methods and intentions. The annotation and 1982 introduction needs updating, though.

Early Mormon colonization of San Bernardino
I come from one of the early LDS pioneer families (Bemis) that colonized San Bernardino (BTW I am Active LDS). I have spent days in the LDS Historical Archives researching this colony. I have read the research done by others of this colony. This book by Lyman (who is descended from one of the Church leaders sent to colonize San Bernardino), is by far the best on the subject. This book goes into detail about Brigham Young's struggle to colonize this area, the actual colonization (and their struggles), and the fight to return to Brigham Young's fold. I have a Great Grand Mother who left the LDS Church while in San Bernardino, and later joined the RLDS Church because of the stranglehold that Brigham Young had over the early saints. For anyone who is interested in the early Mormon colonization of San Bernardino, I highly recommend this book. Professor Lyman brings this part of history alive.

Very good historical account of early San Bernardino
Having an ancestor involved in the early settling of San Bernardino, I was drawn to the book by a facination with his life. What started as a search for him, turned in to an appreciation for the pioneers of this area. Mr. Lyman's book takes the reader through a real life drama of a western settlement. His research was outstanding and his insight thought provoking. If you enjoy western U.S. history, you will enjoy this book.

A High-Level Textbook
This is an important doctoral-level textbook in the statistics of point estimation, which leaves the topic of hypothesis testing for a companion book. Using the text is frustrating because of sketchy proofs and examples and the reader is often pointed to other texts for details.

classic text on estimation
Erich Lehmann wrote this classic text on point estimation as the companion to his earlier masterpiece on hypothesis testing. The book lived up to the standard set by the other text. This edition, now published by Springer-Verlag was revised with the help of George Casella who is also an excellent writer. Another great reference book that statisticians should have on their bookshelf.
