A must have for any shark enthusiasts
This is a fantastic book, and is surely a must-have for any shark enthusiasts, beginnners and experts alike. The bright graphics illuminate the book from cover to cover, with some awesome pictures of sharks from around the world. The comprehensive species index at the back not only helps the reader find their way around any technical jargon, but serves as a wonderful reference point. This book is packed full of detailed biological information, as well as fascinating stories to enthrall and amuse, contributed to by some of the World's leading shark experts.

Killing a myth
This book is filled with beautiful UW-photography, thrilling encounters with the marine life, colorfully authored by Valerie Taylor. It also gives people that are afraid of sharks, a different perspective! I've had this book in my possession since -89, and I read it as often as I can!

This book is so good that i could read it every day
I think that Valerie is a great wrighter and i would realy like to speak whit her in person. The pictures are wonderful. A great book.

Beautiful beyond words, a treasure
This is one of the most beautifully illustrated color/nature/animal stories ever created for children; it is definitely the loveliest I have ever found. Rich, detailed, charming illustrations accompany rhythmic, rhyming text in patterns that build upon each other, featuring all sorts of animals throughout the day and night, and even the sun, moon, and sky. I loved the interesting and somewhat atypical choices of animals showcased (puffins, for example) as well as the more familiar ones. The story progresses throughout one entire day, from moonlight to moonlight, making it an excellent choice as a bedtime read as well. My pre-schooler and I have adored this book since he was 18 months old; it is sure to captivate aesthetics seekers of all ages-a timeless treasure, and a must have in every thoughtful literary collection for young people.

My son's favorite book.
My son has loved this book since he was an infant! He is now 2 1/2 years old and we still check it out of our library regularly. Before he was one he was able to identify the beautiful characters and objects in this book. As a side note, after reading it about the first twenty times or so, I realized it fits perfectly into the rhythm of Donovan's song "Yellow is the Color of My True Love's Hair." Now more often than not, I sing this book to him! If you are familiar with the song, try singing the book to your child. It's so great!

This is a GREAT book!
I think this is a wonderful book. It has very good illustrations and great poems. I think it is a perfect bedtime story for younger kids (3 and younger). I love it!

The Adventures of Hedley the Hedgehog
Published in Hardcover by Valerie Walker (17 September, 1998)
Author: Valerie Walker
Amazon base price: $15.95

A Winning Story For Little Ones
There are five little hedgehogs living under the hawthorn hedge at the bottom of the vegetable garden behind a farm house in Wales -- Thorn, Spike, Thistle, Prickles and Hedley. Hedley is the best at finding slugs and insects and he's the most adventurous. Life is good for the little hedgehogs, but a highway is about to be built that will bulldoze the farm house, plough through the vegetable garden and dig up the hawthorn hedge. James, the little boy who lives on the farm, and his grandfather must leave and go to live on a farm in Somerset with Uncle Giles and Aunt Jane, and the hedgehogs must move to other homes as well.

When James who has "eyes like the sky and a friendly voice" invites Hedley to go with them the little hedgehog jumps at the chance of adventure. On the appointed day Grandfather whose hair is "white and fluffy like a dandelion before the wind blows it away" packs up their horse and cart. Hedley is packed too, in a moss-lined shoebox that James has prepared for him. Thus begin the captivating and entertaining adventures of Hedley the hedgehog.

I found this a delightful book that will charm young children and their parents alike. Hedley is a irresistible little adventurer and the characters he falls in with on his journey, and of course his sidekick Martin the mouse, are equally entertaining. Valerie Walker's gentle evocative prose complemented by Susan Waldie's magical full page, full colour illustrations of woodland and farm life make this a book that children will want to read or have read to them again and again.

The Adventures of Hedley the Hedgehog
Our 8 year-old son rants and raves about Valerie Walker's book. It captures the heart of young children about a gutsy little hedgehog who takes a peak at life from a different perspective from his peers. Get this book. It's a delightful read that's enjoyed several times more and the illustrations are top notch, too.

A well written, "low-tech" story of friendship.
My nieces and nephews were delighted with this story and the lovely illustrations. They took turns using the voices of the many woodland animals and their human friends.

I was glad to read them this low-tech story which unfolds at less than light-speed and deals with friendship and cooperation. Another plus for me is the old fashioned good manners displayed by all the characters - something that is sadly missing from much of today's children's literature and television shows.

Excellent Book
Anger in the work place is an excellent resource for men and women in the work place. Anger is an issue that effects all of us in mostly negative ways. Althought anger can certainly be a positive catalyst for change, generally speaking anger creates unnecessary stress which can manifest itself in unhealthy ways. Overeating, drinking to excess etc, are examples of how unresolved anger can manesfest itself in unhealthy ways. This book helps people manage their anger in positive ways. The author recommends simple steps which are very helpful on a daily basis. The book is written simply and is to the point. I recommend this book for anyone who struggles with internal and unconscious anger. A thumbs up to Ms. Leslie!

This book can be a very useful tool.
I think this can be a very useful tool to someone who is experiencing a difficult situation in his/her work place. The author gives many ideas and suggestions of ways to deal with your anger and the symptoms which go along with that anger. I also feel that the case studies are interesting since many people may be identify themselves within these descriptions. This book also gives many resources which can be very useful to one who may need additional help.

Right on target. Great help for women AND men.
Great help for women and also for men interested in an environment that enhances everybody's daily work life. Has practical tips that are useful not only in dealing with anger in the workplace but in other areas of our lifes. Thumbs up!

A wonderful book about coping w/ change and finding love
This was the first Love Inspired book I read, it was so good that I went out and bought 2 more Love Inspired books.

The author appeals to the lighter side of love (not steamy, but filled with humor and hope), and I recommend it to anyone who likes romance but has reservations about the very sensual romances out today (which I also happen to read).

When a reclusive writer opens her doors to a single dad raising two overwhelming boys, something big is bound to happen. In this case, everyone learns to work together toward making the most of a disastrous situation. Issues such as trust, faith, hope, and love are addressed in a subtle way. It also teaches that we can find blessings even when life turns your world upside down.

I devoured this book every spare moment I had. This is wonderful to come home to after you had a particularly stressful day.

Wonderful Read
I don't generally read inspirational books, but this one was a jewel. The father struggling to cope with his wife-abandonned kids, the rich and prissy woman forced to take them into her picture perfect home when her newly built damn bursts and floods their vacation cabin--they were all just great. The way Hansen handles the interpersonal relationships is masterful. She even includes a scruffy dog. Don't miss it!

a must read!
I haven't been impressed by love inspired books until now. This books characters are warm, funny, and well developed without feeling cliched. I also liked the fact that this book has a contemporary feel. Brianne Walker is writer who makes her home in the Ozarks (Arkansas hills), and leads a quiet and peaceful life. It all changes one night when single dad Mitch Fowler and his two young sons seek refuge from a rainy storm. Soon Brianne finds herself falling in love not only with Mitch but with the entire family. This book is so hilarious, and I absolutely loved reading it. A must read!

Here is a classic!
I've eaten (in the company of my wife & our 2 dachshunds) at Cafe Pongo, a joyous place with delicious food & a terrific communal feeling among staff & patrons. But even if I'd never heard of Pongo, this cookbook would have blown me away. Everything about it, the organization & layout (so very critical in cookbooks, which are, after all manuals of survival) & particularly the recipes themselves: original & imaginative & delicious. Here's a sample my wife & I have tried so far (plus a few chosen at random): Poached Eggs with Zucchinhi Fritters and Roasted Red Pepper Coulis; Chilled Sugar Snap Pea Soup with Fresh Mint; Romaine Salad with Lentil Croutons and Lemon-Tahini Vinaigrette; Beet and Shaved Fennel Salad with Clementine Vinaigrette; Potato Pancakes with Peppered Ginger Applesauce; Sesame-Crusted Shrimp; Roast Beef with Preserved Lemons, Figs and Fennel; Baked Cauliflower and Turnips (Yes! Delicious!!). There's lot's more, too. This cookbook now takes precendence over the 75 or 80 of its companions on our shelves. Thank you, Ms. Nehez!

A wonderful resource
I thought The Cafe Pongo Cookbook was extremely well written and very informative. The author's style and the book's layout made the recipes come alive. I could almost taste the various dishes as I read and couldn't wait to get into the kitchen to try them myself. I found that the directions were very easy to follow and the dishes turned out to be every bit as good as they sounded. I highly recommend this book for anybody who lives to try something just a little bit different from the 'run of the mill'. I even gave an entire dinner part based on the recipes in the book and it was a huge success! Give this book a try, I can guarantee you wont be disappointed!

Reads Like a Letter to a Friend
Delightful cookbook with personal notes from the author which gives the feeling of shared treasures. The recipes are the product of a very inventive chef with an eclectic approach and an obvious passion for food. Also interesting were the comments about the sleepy Hudson Valley Village of Tivoli and the renaissance created in that town by the author and her former partner when they opened the doors to Santa Fe, her first restaurant.

Changes for Kit!: A Winter Story, 1934

A Great Conclusion to Kit's Depression Stories!
In Changes for Kit, Kit outgrows her old red coat she got for a Christmas present and her friends and family make her a new one with old materials that came from their own clothe. Kit, Stirling, and Ruthie decide to donate Kit's old coat to the hobo jungle where there were a lot of children who were cold and hungry. However when they get to the jungle they learn from the few remaining hoboes that most of the families had gone to the soup kitchen for the winter months. So Kit, Stirling, and Ruthie continue their journey to the soup kitchen. The children are all alarmed when they see the poor condition the children at the soup kitchen are in. Kit sees many children who need coats and many who need shoes. She feels very helpless when all she can donate is ONE winter coat.

Meanwhile, back at home her parents get the news that Uncle Hendrick broke his wrist and ankle and is coming to live with them accompanied by his dog Inky. Kit couldn't be more annoyed that mean and crabby Uncle is coming again, and guess whose job it is to look after him? Kit's. She hates how her uncle make her write letters to the newpaper editors and complain about the president and his programs which Kit knows has helped her family get through the hard times. Such as her brother Charlie who worked in the CCC and earned money for the family. However Kit learns from Uncle Hendrick too! She could write a letter about all those kids who need clothing and shelter in the soup kitchen! So she, Ruthie, and Stirling go to the soup kitchen and took pictures of the poor condition the children were in. However Kit knows that since she isn't rich and doesn't have a reputation like Uncle Hendrick she probably won't get her article printed. Well, is her family and Uncle Hendrick in for a surprise when they recieve the paper one morning. Not only are they surprised but Kit's letter affects the whole city of Cinncinati!

The conclusion to Kit's story was another great one in the American Girl's Collection. I can't wait for the next girl's story to come out! They are really beautiful books with their pictures and the Peek into the Past. Lastly I have to say Hooray for Kit!!!

Another great Kit story!
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kit Kittredge, a ten-year-old girl living in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is 1934, and Kit and her family are struggling to make ends meet as the Great Depression deepens. Kit's life seems to suddenly get much worse, when her dour Uncle Hendrick is injured during a fall and moves in with the family. However, it's not her own plight that hurts Kit, it's that of the children she sees in the local soup kitchen. She wants to do something, but what? Perhaps she can steal an idea from her Uncle!

As with the other Kit books, this is a great story. It succeeds brilliantly in teaching history while also teaching a life lesson. The book is wonderfully put together, with great illustrations. The final chapter is a short history of the Great Depression, which makes the book even more informative. This is a great book, one my daughter and I highly recommend.

A GREAT ENDING TO THE KIT BOOKS !
Since there is no description about this book, I'll explain everything I can. In Changes for Kit, Kit finally gets a "new" coat to replace the one she'd outgrown in Kit's Surprise. She, along with her friends Ruthie Smithens and Stirling Howard, decide to give her coat to a hobo at the hobo jungle they had discovered in Kit Saves the Day. But when they get there, they discover that the jungle is deserted, and the few hoboes in the cave tell them that during the winter, many of the hoboes go to the Soup kitchens to eat. So Kit and her friends go to the soup kitchen they visited in Kit Learns A Lesson, and give Kit's coat to a poor girl who is in nothing but rags. Kit and Ruthie also notice the fact that many of the kids at the soup kitchen are wearing poor coats and shoes, and Kit plans to find a way to help them, but can't figure out how.
Back at home, Mr. Smithens delivers the news that Kit's cranky Uncle Hendrick broke his arm and ankle when he fell down the stairs, and now insists on moving in with the Kittredges. Since Kit's parents are busy and Uncle Hendrick can't write, when he has a complaint about the local newspaper, he demands that Kit dictate it for him. Kit doesn't agree with what Uncle Hendrick says at all, and comes up with her own letter to congratulate the newspaper editor.
Then Ruthie decides to donate some of her clothes to the Soup Kitchen, and that's when Kit gets her idea to photograph the kids in the kitchen. She does so, and on her way to the newspaper office, she drops her letter and the roll of film off with Uncle Hendrick's dictated letter. Kit fears that because she's not as wealthy or important as her Uncle that her letter will never get published. But everyone in Cincinnati, as well as in Kit's home is in for a surprise. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read the rest of the Kit books, as it does a good job of finishing off her series.

Creating Powerful Radio : A Communicator's Handbook
Published in Paperback by M Street Corporation (01 May, 1996)
Author: Valerie Geller
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $14.00
Average review score:

A "Must Read" for Radio Professionals!
To counter the obviously politically biased (and incidently, INCORRECT* information contained in the) review by Booknews, this is a wonderfully easy-to-read, quickly digestible handbook for people in the "biz" written by a professional who knows her "stuff". It skips the lessons in the "school of hard knocks" with the information a radio person (talent or management) needs to survive and prosper. For those training in, considering or actively involved pursuing a career in radio, the book is a wealth of information at a bargain price.

*Valerie Geller was not Rush Limbaugh's "consultant" -- she was the Program Director of WABC in New York, the "flagship" station for Rush Limbaugh's syndicated radio show. And even though their political views were often divergent, they have professional respect for one another. (Booknews: If you are going to write reviews, CHECK YOUR FACTS FIRST -- a cardinal rule of reporting. But then, if you'd actually READ the book, you'd KNOW that already!)

an interesting book for worldwide radio professionals
An interesting book for radio professionals like me, that I'm living in Italy. Good advises and simple to read.

Effective techniques for talk radio programmers and talent.
Geller consults some of the World's great talk radio stations from Mexico to Finland. This book summarizes the most effective and proven techniques for talk radio practitioners. The organization of the book is excellent for real-world users as it takes talk radio from theory to implementation.

The most useful sections deal with focusing talent on bringing out the best in their own personalities and "being themselves." The explanations on storytelling and finding the theme within the story are vital for successful radio.

This reviewer uses the book as the basic text for a group of 11 talk stations and has found it to be a key part of our success formula.

Not just for hockey fans
I found it hard to put this book down. There is plenty of exciting hockey action, but the story is most captivating off the ice, where the title character's chemical, physical and emotional problems threaten to push him to the breaking point. The book illuminates the mindset of a hockey "goon," and the pressures that are unique to his profession. The author does a great job of describing the enforcer's complex relationships with his coach, his teammates, his girlfriends, and his father.

Hockey fans will enjoy the violent action on the ice, but the strong human drama should appeal to everyone.

Not a hockey fan, but could become one!
I am not a fan of hockey, but after reading Enforcer I certainly am going to try! It's a great storyline out of the hockey rink and an exciting adventure inside the rink. I LOVED this book!

Wow!!
I originally bought this book because in sounded interesting and it has a forward by Link Gaetz (of whom I am a big fan). I wasn't really sure what to expect when I began reading, and then I discovered that I could not put it down! This is incredibly well written and takes you right inside his head. You end up being right there through the entire tale. Even if you don't like hockey, or don't know anything about hockey, If you love human emotional drama, you should love this book! I highly recommend it!
