Made to Be Loved
As a single person, I began reading "Made to Be Loved" with great hesitation. Throughout my reading, I appreciated the Bell's vulnerability and felt that I wasn't alone in my struggle to develop closer and deeper relationships. Even though the main focus is the marriage relationship, I would highly recommend the book to anyone who is committed to building true intimacy into relationships that matter to them. The time investment will be well worth it!

Making Sense of Secondary Science: Research into Children's Ideas

A must for all high school science teachers!
This book should accompany any science text book because it is a reality check for teachers. The research is clear and comprehensive - no holds barred! After reading it from cover to cover I immediately modified my teaching practice. I reassessed my assumptions about what students know and can do then and changed course. I have a greater appreciation for my students' views and misconceptions and now my job is to steer them straight - or better still, to coach them to construct their own science knowledge and skills.

Fascinating portrait of Hong Kong's urban space
The authors say this is a book for residents of Hong Kong rather than for tourists, but really it is ideal for the kind of traveller who is interested in how various cities work and "feel". I bought this in HK while travelling there in 2001, and can attest that it faithfully and insightfully captures what Hong Kong is "like" (at least at a certain level).

The format basically that of a photo essay, with high-quality photography of distinctive features of HK's urban landscape and often insightful commentary. The authors have a predilection for the language of postmodern continental philosophy, not usually my favourite reading, but sometimes used here to good effect.

Highly recommended
Valerie Thompson has done an outstanding job of tackling this portion of the global bond market. The book is thorough enough to provide a refresher to a market pro yet accesible to moderately skilled retail investors. Mastering the Euromarkets is particularly recommended for the legions of retirement plan equity investors who will eventually need to worry about generating income from their portfolios.

academic detective story - great read
Compassionate and humanistic, this book examines the academic evidence for the authorÕs hypothesis that a womanÕs body, personality and behavior determines the sex of the infant. This clearly written and easily accessible book reads like a good detective story. It takes the reader, whether university lecturer, parent-to-be or college student through the labyrinthine twists and turns of the latest studies in developmental psychology, evolutionary biology, animal behavior and reproductive physiology to the authorÕs simple yet profound conclusion: the gender of the infant is not a matter of chance, it rests with the mother. The book is a refreshing reminder of the need for dialogue between the different academic disciplines, and it is not accidental that such a book comes out of New Zealand, and that it is written by a woman academic, Dr Valerie Grant, lecturer in Behavioural Science at the School of Medicine, University of Auckland. The author combines academic rigor with a breadth of research and learning in a broad range of fields. While her conclusions will be controversial and unacceptable to many, both her hypothesis and her on-going research may shed a revolutionary light on one of the most fascinating questions every pregnant mother ponders: is it a boy or a girl?

Too bad there's nothing like it...
WOW! I have never before read a book like this before. From page one, I was sucked in and couldn't put it down for anything. The way that Valerie Stephens draws a perfect picture for the reader, you can actually feel what Amanda (the main character) is going through. There are twists and turns...plenty to keep you interested. It's too bad that Ms. Stephens hasn't written anything else. At least not under this name. Buy the book for your own personal collection, you will not regret it!
