William's Battle is Won but the War is Far From Over!
This is the story of William of Normandy's, now King of England's, struggle to be recognized as England's sovereign lord. He doesn't succeed very easily and sometimes overreacts in his choices of punishment that affect the common people more than the rebels. He is not a very easy person to understand and like, however, he constantly tries, to either win his English nobles over with force or with uncharacteristic compasssion and understanding.

Meanwhile, Brand of Fallowdene and his daughter Wulfhild struggle in their own ways to come to terms with a Norman England. Wulfhild decides to compromise to keep her family's English manor Fallowdene, while Brand, having made oathes to continue the fight against the Normans, joins the rebels in the attempt to put an Englishman back onto the throne of England.

This is an excellent conclusion to the first two novels in this trilogy, "Gildenford," and "The Norman Pretender." These books make you feel as though you are living the lives of the characters, historical and fictional. It brings the middle ages back to life and you can't help but feel the passions, love, anger, and all the emotions of the conquerors and the conquered. They are all out-of-print but can be found and should be as this is a trilogy of the Norman Conquest that should not be missed!

Simple and Effective Method
.
The Emotional Freedom Technique described for self-help in this book is surprisingly effective for a wide range of problems. It is based in the fairly new understanding that negative emotional patterns are symptoms of disturbances in the energy merdians of the body. With EFT we can intervene and correct these disturbances and imbalances directly - at the energy level - through specific acupressure points. Since energy is then free to flow naturally, healing of emotional issues often leads to physical healing and an increased over-all sense of well-being.

Such claims of rapid emotional healing may sound too good to be true, as we come from an orientation of traditional counseling, congnitive, analytical, and 'reliving the pain' psychotherapies. However, these approaches are rarely as effective as we would wish. One only needs to try these new energy methods for oneself to discover their power to create quick and lasting results.

I am certain that energy healing systems are the wave of the future.

A Grown-Up Fantasy
Empress in the Wrinkle of Time was a definite page-turner from start to finish. Building on the mythology of alien abduction, the author takes us far into the future where an interplanetary feudal society has only the vaguest memories of their roots in our own world. This is a tale of heroism, duty and sacrifice in which Tai and Chehada must navigate a mine field of political intrigue and the manipulations of a not-so-benign artificial intelligence, and the stakes are nothing less than the survival of the species. The characters are well developed and human, the story line is clean and clear, and the plot runs and twists like a wild horse. Definitely a must read.

Equal Treatment for People With Mental Retardation: Having and Raising Children
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (2001)
Authors: Martha A. Field and Valerie A. Sanchez
Amazon base price: $19.50
Used price: $16.50
Average review score:

Controversial and convincing
This book puts forth a compelling thesis: The mentally retarded should have full rights to manage their own sexual and reproductive lives. The idea sounds good, but most people would quail at its full implications. Should a severely retarded 15-year-old be allowed to bear a child? What about situations where parents fear a daughter might suffer from rape in an institution? Should they have the right to have their daughter sterilized? A Harvard law professor, Field does not dodge the hard questions. She addresses them and forces a re-thinking of conventional ideas about who should make decisions for others and why. Field writes with such authority and conviction that at the end you are likely to be persuaded that human rights apply to the retarded in ways you never imagined. Analytical and systematic, the book is rooted in a deep knowledge of the law and a concern for the shaping of social policy. It is a must-read for those who face decisions about the retarded, either within their families or in the public arena. Those concerned with human rights will also find their minds, and perhaps their causes, expanded when they read this book.

The Essential Guide for New Writers: From Idea to Finished Manuscript

Used price: $8.21

Average review score:

This book is a "must-have" for any writer, new or not.
Within these well-organized pages, Valerie Storey distills the massive amount of confusing, and often conflicting, advice facing writers today into the basic information necessary for crafting a short story, novel, or non-fiction manuscript. Her clear and gentle style guides even the most reluctant writer around obstacles in the path to publication that might otherwise end a productive career.

With her eye for what editors want, Ms. Storey presents an unflinching look at all aspects of the business--from getting ideas down on paper to coping with rejection AND acceptance. The Seven-Point-Plotting system she explains helps bring her readers' current projects into focus. In addition, writing assignments at the chapter ends enable a reader to get right to work and use what he has learned.

Though I have been writing for a long time, I found much of value in this book. It is one of those resources to keep handy for continued use again and again.
