A Brilliant Surprise
I have read almost every anthology that Alyson Books has released, and I have to say that this is the best one so far. I especially enjoyed "Not Destined to Be A Classic" and am really looking forward to Michelle Sawyer's novel after reading this. Her story was a real hoot and is kind of like Sex In The City. Very slick. There's another story about a gym teacher that has this great sexual tension. All in all, this book is a real winner. I highly recommend it.

Clever! Amazing! Funny! Hot!
I was completely blown away by the quality of this collection of stories. Carol Guess leads the pack in the first tale, with both wit and skill. Another story, "To The Core", has a funny, erotic ending that will leave you breathless; Michelle Sawyer completely pulls you in with her compelling style in "Not Ever Destined to Be A Classic" (an exerpt from her debut novel, or so the bio in the back of the book says); and Elizabeth Sims (she's the creator of the Lillian Byrd mysteries) breaks your heart in "For Faye".
If you're looking for well-crafted tales of les love, ladies, this book is sure to satisfy! I couldn't put it down!

Life story of an acorn
We follow an acorn from the time it was first shaken from the mother tree to its death. (Well, that sounds harsh but it is true.) Very charming little book. Each page has a little rhyming ditty where the acorn asks who helped him get along to the next stage of his life and then there is a reply. The sentences are on one page and the opposite page is a beautiful illustration of a forest scene depicting the tree's life stage. It is hard to describe, but one example is that the question is about who made him strong and the reply is the Earth and then the illustration is of a wide, strong oak tree with a horse standing next to it. Each illustration includes at least one type of wild animal close to the tree. The change of seasons is seen. The book ends with the tree having been old and rotting and then cut down to a stump, with the seeds scattered at its' roots and the seed promising to tell the acorn's story.

I love this book! I especially am interested in nature books. The life span of the tree is a topic rarely depicted in a picture book. I also love the change of seasons being shown and the various wildlife animals in the illustrations. Illustrations of the animals are life-like (not cartoon-ish).

Wonderful piece on Black American Inventors!
The author describes the life and work of two female and three male African American Inventors and Scientists, including the contributions of agriculturalist George Washington Carver and Nigerian-born computer scientist Philip Emeagwali.

The search engines contain a thousand supplementary references to Carver or Emeagwali.

The stories are filled with the themes of perseverance and overcoming obstacles.

The inventions described include massively parallel supercomputers, petroleum reservoir simulation and oil recovery, uses of peanut, lasers for eye surgery, and a new way to make rocket fuel.

Excerpts read: "Emeagwali programmed the Connection Machine to make 3.1 billion calculations per second.... This speed was a new world record in 1989.... The record breaking speed of Emeagwali's invention helped people understand the value of parallel computing."

The photographs of the inventors and the illustrations of their inventions make this a useful book for K-12 school assignments on inventors.

This book is a must for math, science and black history related school assignments.

A Lucky Woman
Valerie Strong is a woman who has seemingly led an enviable life. Her love of plants and nature in general is so evident and well-stated. She has an eye not only for plants, but design, architecture, stonework, and so on. Her love of gardening has allowed her to meet and make friends with interesting poeple who get so much satisfaction in sharing their ideas (and sweat and muscle power) to complete a job that will perhaps allow others to nurture their appreciation for gardening. As I prepare to revamp my Ohio yard this Spring, I will make good use of the practical ideas as well as the gardening philosophy that Valerie espouses in this lovely book.

This most incredibly funny gave me hours of plesure reading its completely nonsenseical sugestions and pointers in the field of alligator wrestling. Not only does this book have absolutely nothing to do with anything, but it is monumentially enjoyable.

nice book of postcards...
The postcard book features 5 cards per American Girl and features the bright, full-color illustraions featured in the books. I liked this set better than any of the ones currently out, which feature less cards per American girl.

Charming Adventure Story
This is a wonderfully illustrated story for young children about 3 to 7. In it the main charactor, Dill'm, is tricked by the evil Tabosh into joining into a "race without rules" in order to warn his best friend. Along the way Dill'm (who can't do anything special, like jump or run or swim)has many mishaps. As he faces each new challenge, he calls on God, who answers by giving him pieces of the invincible armor of God. Clothed in the full armor oor God, he is able to defeat Tabosh. At the end of the story he gets a new name: Armor Dill'm.
