Forest Trees of the Northeast

Authors: James P Lassoie, Valerie a Luzadis, Deborah W Grover, and Karen English-Loeb
Amazon base price: $19.90
Average review score:

Useful, and fun to read
This 277-page book describes 27 trees that are commonly found in the northeast. Each description is accompanied by an outline of the typical shape of the mature tree, illustrations of various tree parts, and a map showing the range of the species within the United States. Some vignettes contain folklore and history about the species, uses of the wood, and a description of diseases, insects and injuries that typically attack the tree. The size of the book makes it a perfect companion for a walk in the woods, or relaxing in a chair at home.

This study is great fun !
This unit study was a wonderful treat for us. I had the opportunity to hear Valerie Bendt speak at a conference this summer, and found her philosophy and enthusiasm to be engaging. I'm using the Frances Unit Study with my 6 year old daughter, who can't wait to begin homeschooling each day, and has fallen in love with Frances. I, too, have fallen in love with Frances all over again ! The material is easy to teach, academically challenging and great fun. This would be perfect for any new homeschooler.

Marriage, adultery and promises - Chaucer was ahead of his t
Who is the narrator? By the end of the tale i was confused if Chaucer, The Franklin or one of his characters was speaking to me! Chaucer, the author of Canterbury Tales introdues the Franlin who now has to tell his tale to the rest of a pilgrimage on their way to Canterbury. The franklin who is just below the nobility in rank spells out an exquisite teale in which Arveragus marries Dorigen and promises never to be her master or force her to do anything unwillfully. Arveragus soon departs the scene as he goes to fight abroad and along comes Aurelius who declares his true love for Dorigen. Dorigen is upset and is in two minds what to do so she casts Aureilus away by setting him an impossible task of removing all the rocks in the sea to win her love. Aurelius nearly dies but with help from his brother and a magician an illusion is created whereby all the rocks disappear. Dorigen is now in trouble as Arveragus returns and she cannot possibly confess to love both men at the same time. She tells Arveragus of the situation who forces her to live with Aurelius. Dorigen thinks about committing suicide but then decides to approach Aurelius who forgives her and tells her to live with her husband. Aurelius now has no money to pay the magician for his illusion but all ends well as the magician lets him off. Who is the most kindes of them all? It is difficult to suggest who but this tale is so enthralling that you have to read it to believe it!

I feel this is one of the best children's christmas stories. It is about a young girl, Tilly, whose plans for a perfect Christmas have been ruined, she thinks ... Book beats exhibition
I recommend this book highly. I enjoyed the Dayton Art Institute show on which it is based, but missed having archeological background on the show placards. The photography in the book is excellent, and for the tiniest artifacts, it's actually easier to see them in the book than in the show. Every article in the show is also in the book. Production quality is very high. The text narratives are by serious scholars, mostly Chinese or hyphen-Chinese, and the English translations are fluent and idiomatic.

Having been to several Silk-Road shows and having read several books on the subject, I've reached the point where I'm impressed by how much we don't know about the silk road--authorities disagree, and everyone uses different names for the same place. Perhaps it's time for a definitive study?

Unique! Rail-trail detail with the history of its railroad!
This book is quite unique - not only does it offer descriptions of trails from Conn. to Maine down to the 10th of a mile, but it also provides insight into the railroads that once traveled on them. A must-have for any rail-trail rider or hiker who wondered about the railroads that once ruled the trail. Asphalt lovers note: only 11 of the 26 trails in the book are fully or partially paved.

a wonderful book for anyone who love horses and horse racing
This book is an inspiration for all young girls who have ever wanted to have a career that would be horse related. All of the biographies of the ladies listed here show the determination needed to make a living in a sport that is very exciting, but also demanding and frustrating.
