The Courage of a Young Boy
A New Heart for Alex is an action-packed story of how a young boy meets the challenge of open-heart surgery. Although in the beginning I was confused with some of the context used, I was drawn into the story and understood how much courage and hope was needed to make the surgery a success, and how sometimes it is not a success. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to other Junior High School students.

Story of A Courageous Child
A New Heart for Alex is a compelling story about a young boy whose father is a doctor and mother is a nurse. Alex was born with a congenital heart defect and much of his young life was spent acquiring coping skills. Now the time has come for Alex to have his heart surgically repaired.

The reader is invited to travel with Alex as he faces the challenge of surgery. Experience the anticipation, humor, fears and insights into the mystery of life as this mature eleven-year-old child triumphs over physical limitations. The book is written in a style that is engaging, fast reading and appropriate for adults and adolescents.

Heart-warming, candid & thought-provoking
A New Heart for Alex is a heart-warming story of an adolescent faced with the wonder of growing up and with his own mortality simultaneously; a candid, albeit brief glimpse into the dark comedy that is the world of surgery; and a thought-provoking, cross-cultural lesson about the value of life even in the face of letting it go. It leaves the reader hoping for a sequel.

You will love it
This is the most used book in our IT department. Even experienced SQL programmers have found some tricks that were useful.

This is not a SQL tutorial or reference. It is a list of frequently ask questions about Oracle SQL and one or more solutions to the same.

All of the topics are logically grouped and clearly written. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who writes SQL code more than occaisionally.

Good Book !
Gives good insight into SQL queries. Worth reading.

Never been the same
This Alex Mack book is based on the first episode on "The secret world of Alex Mack".When Alex is sprayed with a chemical called GC-11,she got the power to morph into a puddle silver ooze, zap from her fingers, face turn yellow when nervous, and float objects!

Alex-was-just-an-average-kid-until-her-1st-day-of-junior-hi
Alex was just a normal kid until her first day of junior high. One second Alex is walking home and then there's a crash. A truck from the paridise vally chemical plant over turns and drenches Alex in some weird chemical. And ever since then Alex has never been the same. The chemical gave Alex three powers: #1. Alex can move things just by thinking real hard about something. #2. Alex can morph into a liqued and stay like that but if she's in a more cold or in water she can stay a liqued longer. #3. Alex can zap things with her finger. Alex's best friend Ray thinks her powers are cool, And her sister Annie thinks Alex is a science project. Alex can't let anyone else no not even her parents because she knows the chemical plant wants to find her so they can use GC-161 to have it so one can stuff his/her face and not gain a pound. But you know what, Alex isn't so average anymore.

A normal girl gains super powers in one day!
Alex was a pretty average kid going to her first day of junior high school. Her day is really rough, and on the way home, she gets drenched in an illegal chemical called GC-161. Now she can zap things through her fingers, float objects to her, and morph into a silver puddle. All too cool? Actually it is. It is hard to control herself sometimes, and having PVC Plant looking for her as a guinea pig isn't helping either. Can Alex keep a normal teen life and control her new abilities? Will the plant catch her? Read this book. I thought it was really good-- even better than the episode it's based on! If you like Alex Mack, this would be a good book to read.

A MUST READING FOR ALL TEENAGERS--ADULTS TO !
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN THIS FAST MOVING NOVEL WRITTEN BY A TEENAGER WITH REMARKABLE MATURE UNDERSTANDING OF TRUE FAMILY VALUES.

A Pleasurable and Profitable Read!
At fourteen years old, Alex Patillo is an imaginative young author with amazing spiritual depth. John Benson's story, beginning as a high school student and continuing to his Pastorate in a large metropolitan church, is an exciting testimony to one man's committment and struggle to "grow" his church by offering God's love rather than popular, secular "come-ons", while dealing with a critical medical problem and his daughter's determination to go her way. An exciting and beneficial read for teens and a spiritual affirmation for adults.

THE BOOK "STEEP CLIFFS" WAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!
THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR CHRISTIANS WHO ARE TRYING TO BECOME STRONGER CHRISTIANS!!! BEFORE I READ IT, I WASEN'T THAT BIG OF A CHRISTIAN, BUT AFTER I READ IT, IT SHOWED ME HOW TO BELIEVE MORE AND HAVE MORE FAITH IN CHRIST!!! I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO HAS THE DESIRE TO BECOME A STRONGER CHRISTIAN!!!

Thought and Language
Published in Paperback by MIT Press (1986)
Authors: Lev S. Vygotsky, L. S. Vygotskii, and Alex Kozulin
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

Fantastic
The only thing I can say about this book and the author is that this man was a genius! Worth every second spent reading it!

A landmark...
Vygotsky, who was a contemporary of Piaget, unfortunately never received nearly as much attention while still alive. Probably due to the fact that he was working in Russia and had a relatively short career his work seems to have taken a very long time to even get published for 'western' consumption. His theories also go against the grain of the dogma currently in vogue in psychology.

This book gives a brief overview of Vygotsky's life and career. Then it launches into Vygotsky's original manuscript which begins with a critique of some of the central themes of that time; oddly enough those themes are still being pursued by psychologists today. Vygotsky's critique is very interesting and demonstrates a very broad range of understanding of psychological, physical and philosophical knowledge throughout the section.

The second part of the book then advances Vygotsky's theories of thought and language development. And that is the crux of Vygotsky's theory: thought and language each develop in a manner that one might characterize as partially self-catalyzing in addition to behaving as one. Vygotsky also advanced some important ideas about child potential with his "zone of proximal development".

Vygotsky pointed out that development hinges on the social structure surrounding the child and is not similar to the idea of some computer operating system simply requiring some type of "load" instruction. That is, Vygotsky's work seems to dispel some of the hot air surrounding Chomsky's ideas about "deep grammar" structures existing and just waiting for the instructions to start working; instead thought and language develop, sometimes separately and sometimes requiring each other to act as catalysts.

Given recent advances in primate language studies, complex adaptive systems and Wittgenstein's contributions to the philosophy of systems I believe Vygotsky's work becomes all the more important and relevant. We are only just starting to grasp the importance of thinking about development in a systems mode as opposed to the old way of reductionism (and the weird dogmatic offshoot of this: strict materialism).

This is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about how we develop. Other interesting ideas and overviews can be found in Bogdan's "Minding Minds" and Faber's "Objectivity and Human Perception". Then there is the burgeoning field of complexity where a good general overview can be found in "Signs of Life". And for those who really want to get deeper, read some of the recent work done in EEG and meditation to help kids with ADD and other problems.

The behavior of cognition
A contemporary of Piaget (developmental psychology)and Watson (behaviorism), Vygotsky launches a cogent critique and synthesis of these two scientific schools. His asserting that learning leads development is as fresh and valuable today as it was when he first wrote the text. Secondly, his calling for a functional analysis of language has been pursued only by the behavioral schools; a short-fall of cognitive and developmental psychology which focuses on the structure of language and hypothetical constructs of brain functioning. Vygotsky relied on observable behavior under contrived and natural conditions in developing his model of socially mediated learning. Although he does a bit of theorizing, his view of learning speech and thought--a skill taught and mediated by social forces--is an excellent bridge between the two schools of thought mentioned above. This book should be required reading for developmental psychologists, educators and behaviorists alike.

Brilliant and simple, a winning formula
This book astounded me. It takes a very simple approach to training horses, and is surprisingly close to some of the "natural horse care" mantra that is going around today. Said "natural" approach is usually ridiculed by the "serious" trainers, who pump their horses full of drugs, scope them every other day, and advocate the purchase of yearlings who possess early speed but break down in six months.

Burch's methods are straightforward and matter-of-fact. This book would be useful to anyone training a sport horse, whether it be for racing, endurance, or eventing.

Superb
Impossible that present day horses would beat any horse trained by Preston Burch. Just read the exercise prescriptions in this book and be blown away. I certainly was. Here is carefully controlled training by a trainer understanding that his horses are participating in an athletic event. This is a book about conditioning equine athletes and also contains every other aspect of training and caring for thoroughbred race horses in a well written book by an individual who apparently understood the great care required. I held off reading this fearing it was dated, but what a pleasant surprise to find the extreme if succinct comprehensiveness here, every aspect is covered by a fellow who tried to do everything correctly. This is Ivers before Ivers, and one does wonder whatever happened to trainers like Max Hirsch and Preston Burch.

Preston Burch, where are you?
If every owner had a trainer like Preston Burch, there would be a lot more owners.

This is a cornerstone book for a racing library. There is a large amount of fundamental training information in this simply written little book.

The sections on conditioning schedules are invaluable. The degree of conditioning Burch afforded his horses is probably unmatched today.

Read this book, and then end it to your trainer (if he can read).

A true story of struggle and passion
I approached this book as a dachshund lover, and found much, much more. By the time I left the last page, I knew intimately the life of a person with epilepsy and the near-miracle of a small dog who is the key to a new and more confident life for his owner. A true story of struggle against adversity and passion for the advancement of a good cause -- assistance dogs. You'll want to fly to Los Angeles to see this wonderful dog for yourself.

An eye-opening story
An amazing, heartfelt and honest description of the level of affection and mutual trust possible between man and dog...

Through Alex, Davis opens our eyes to the untapped potentials of assistance dogs and the sense of freedom and happiness they provide, and educates us about the urgent need for tolerance of these day-to-day canine partners.

This is a man's-best-friend story, in the true sense.

A book about a special relationship
Assistance dogs enable their human partners to have confidence, independence, and the ability to continue their lives in any way they choose. These canine bravehearts provide eyes, ears, alarms and strength, all while giving their partners the love, loyalty, and devotion of 24-hour companionship. Joel Davis shows us size doesn't matter and that his relationship with Alex, his seizure-alert dog, is special.

Small Voice: You Will Buy This Book... buy the book..
As investigative writer and author of the The Professional Paranoid, I found PD/USA jambed tight with useful details and facts, despite a diminutive appearance. I am often asked by others for various helps or information, and often, referring them to PD/USA becomes a perfect starting point for their coming to understand what forces are really at play in the real world. It is NOT a pretty picture...

When former heads of the American and Canadian Psychiatric Associations and many other infulential professional groups came directly from CIA mind control projects...

When, despite CIA telling Congress that mind control did not work and the research was abandoned, that (as is found in the Appendix of The Professional Paranoid) approximately half of all CIA proprietaries operating in the U.S. have something to do with mind control projects...

That anyone who does have a problem CANNOT turn to a professional for help because the professional will automatically label them mentally ill, and perhaps hand deliver them directly to their tormentors 'for further treatment'.

The cover is ugly. The topic uglier. The truth ugliest of all. But not to know the truth is to be an obedient lemming chasing the tail of the doomed critter in front of you.

Frightening
I do not agree with everything is this book. For example, while I do agree that False Memory Syndrome has been abused in order to cover up real crimes, false memories have also been used to convict innocent people. I have a degree in psychology and the main reason I decided not to go into the profession is because of my disgust with much of it, including its many manufactured "diseases". However, there is still much that is valid with the profession and I have witnessed people being given indisputably false memories under experimental conditions. But this, of course, does not mean every memory is false (in fact, this supports his overall thesis). One has to be careful in criticizing anything with too broad a brush stroke.

That being said, this is a very thoroughly researched book on the history of mind control experiments, especially in the U.S., with references to, e.g., articles written by Nobel Prize recipients. This book blows the lid off of violations of human rights committed by the U.S. government and others, adding to the damage done by the CIA's already damning public admissions about their MK-Ultra program (and only about 5% of the MK-Ultra files avoided destruction in an attempted coverup before it was discovered by the public!). Even if you reject half of the data and conclusions in this book, what is left is not only extremely informative but terrifying.

It is clear from Alex Constantine's writing that he is not a sensationalist, but is genuinely outraged at the injustices committed by the government and wishes to expose them. While this quest may, in my opinion, at times blind him when he is assessing his data, much of it is indisputable and I consider him to be a courageous advocate for the freedom and dignity of human beings and not a charlatan or a phony like many other authors.

Fantastic Book
I thoroughlly enjoyed this book, and learned a great deal about the dark side of American politics and the warfare state in the process. This is one of the best books I have ever read, bar none. The chapters on CIA covert ops are especially informative.

"A remarkable landmark"
A detailed road map of the author's quest for life's meaning and self-discovery. A spiritual fulfillment and embrace of uneasy passages.

A cleansing of the mind and soul!
This book is a spiritual resurrection from beginning to end with different etapes of life investigated and researched. Thematic divisions such as "Madness Of The Mind", "Hurt And Sorrow" and "Dreams" keep us in check letting us know that it is okay for all of us to have our quixotic dreams, madness and to feel hurt.
This collection of poems by Alex Cuoco is a modern day refreshing investigation into life and its pain, sorrows and happiness.
It is inspirational and cleansing. A great read and comforter!

Refreshing View
Simply great! A very refreshing approach to modern poetry. A must read.
