I never would have found a secret getaway without this book!
My husband and I spent a wonderful two days in July 2000 staying in "The Cabin." at the Guest House Cottages on Whidbey Island. We found this romantic spot in this book. There are so many wonderful places in this book, so I will tell you about the place we stayed to give you an idea of the quality of the listings presented in this great resource.

We stayed in the cutest log cabin you have ever seen, pictures at my site. A complimentary continental breakfast was set up for us on arrival. We loved having our own kitchen and a grocery store nearby so we could pick up needed supplies for a picnic at the beach. There was a beautiful pool where you could lay out in the sun. In the winter you would be sipping hot chocolate by one of the beautiful fireplaces in your cabin. The cabins were off the road in the woods and have queen or king-size featherbeds. The floors, walls and ceilings were all wood. They have river-rock fireplaces or wood-burning stoves, skylights and antique furnishings. The one we stayed in had beautiful stained-glass windows. They really went out of their way to make our stay as romantic as possible. Once you have your key, the cabin is all yours. It is your own private getaway. If you are running late they even offer to leave the key out for you when you arrive.

There was a private deck complete with barbecue and two chairs so you could sit and look out over the pond inhabited by African geese. The surroundings were lush and green and we saw lots of the cutest bunnies.

We also visited a lavender field and brought home a little lavender plant. If you do visit these same cottages, don't forget to visit Deception Pass. In fact, plan to stay at least two days, there are plenty of activities, including hiking and sailing.

I can truly say that without this book, we would most likely have never known about this secret hideaway. So, between you and me....don't tell too many people! This is a great place. Only tell your best friends or buy them this book. I also recommend this book as a wedding present.

The pages are filled with pictures of each getaway and the general prices are also listed for your convenience. I believe there is a new book with updated information, but this is the one I have.

Beautifully Photographed; A Wonderful Resource!
"Weekends for Two in the Pacific Northwest" is a perfect resource for couples looking to have some away-time in a special place. From Ashland to Seattle, the beautiful photographs and detailed explainations are very helpful in planning your gettaway. Prices and aspects of dozens of hotels, lodges, B&Bs, etc. are explored and the authors even give personal oppinons, and suggestions on which rooms are more romantic. I would recommend this book to anyone with a heart for romance. It's a favorite in my household!

Incredible!!!!
This book has done a wonderful job of collecting some of the best places in the Pacific Northwest for couples. It gives comprehensive descriptions, tells you the best rooms to stay in, gives rates (they may be a little out of date now, but still-ballpark), and in general does a good job of showcasing the selected hotels. It made me want to visit every one of them. If you live in the area, or are visiting, and are romantically inclined, or know someone who is, get this book.

For philosophical and educational studies collections
Wholeness: On Education, Buckminster Fuller, and Tao is a treatise divided into three main chapters; as its subtitle suggests, the chapters focus upon Education, Buckminster Fuller, and the Tao. Unifying the theme of this scholarly, superbly crafted presentation is the concept of wholeness and how it applies to life in a world where so many are often blind to the whole picture that encompasses the countless different threads that make up the tapestry of global events. Six appendixes offer further selected readings and more thought on the interdependence of world problems. Highly recommended for philosophical and educational studies collections and reading lists, Wholeness is a scholarly, vital look at the unifying factors connecting diverse global problems today.

wholeness review
i have read alex gerber's book on wholeness. in my view gerber

clearly represents with facts and figures the essence of the

thinker richard buckminster fuller, who was known as bucky, by

those who aspired to his aspiration for a world that worked for

everyone. after one reads the chapter on fuller, one comes away

with an understanding that fuller was not just a technocrat, but

one who had a firm understanding of nature's subtle display.

Alex extends fuller's articulations of nature with

the notion of tao in education, which is quite similar to

william irwin thomson's take on tao in his chapter the road

not taking from his book entittled "coming into

being : artifacts and texts in the evolution of consciousnes"

Yet the differences that come forth from the synergy of

universe represented by dr. alex gerber are significant in

their turns to plays. He stresses thoroughtout his book that the

individual realization of wholeness is feasable in ones life

time. the book is designed for the person, who just wants a

gist, albeit a fragrant one, of the notion of wholeness; also it

designed for thinkers, who want to pursue this inquiry with the

necessary rigor required for good scholarship

in retrospect, this book will endure. fuller

wished his work be usefull for future generations; this idea

of wise use strikes me as similar to the views of the many

native amercian indians, and other indigenous people on this

planet.

Wonderful!! A must-read book!
Life on Planet Earth is in serious trouble. We're adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere through fossil fuel burning, creating holes in the protective ozone layer, decimating forested lands, contaminating land and water, and ever-increasing our population.

Wholeness explores options for a brighter future--indeed salvation from an ultimate destruction. Author, visionary, and educator Alex Gerber Jr. demonstrates the theories of the famous inventor/philosopher Buckminster Fuller and the principles of spirituality found in Tao, and offers a means to understand where we are globally, as well as locally and individually, and what we can do about it.

Dr. Gerber writes, "'The whole' refers to everything--the entirety of creation, all that is, undivided, without diminution." By learning to view the world's many facets (e.g., ecology, energy, economics, ethics, and education) not as parts but as an integrated whole, we can begin to live in accord with each other and with nature rather than in fragmentation, discord, and self-destruction.

Focusing particularly on design (in the fullest sense of the word), education, and spirituality, Gerber shows us how Buckminster Fuller's philosophy of "comprehensivity" helps us to connect with and act in accord with the whole. He then presents the timeless philosophy of Tao as a complement to Fuller's that encourages continual connection with "the oneness of being" and teaches us, as Gerber puts it, "to exist and act in that state of wholeness."

Wholeness: On Education, Buckminster Fuller, and Tao is an awakening to a better way. Here is a book intended for the broadest spectrum of people--those seeking to navigate in this complex and often bewildering world. Wholeness is far and away the best book this reviewer has ever read on this vital subject. Alex Gerber Jr., in his exceptional, timely offering, has given us a means to see the forest before there are no trees.

Really Good!!!
This book was really and I mean really easy to relate to. Amy,a really snot-nosed brat [we all know one],tries to become friends with Alex just so she can get with Alex's brother. What a witch!! But don't worry Alex's girls [friends] got her back. I really loved this book and you should check out the entire series. WAIT-A-GO KATE ANDREWS!!!!!!!!!!!

An outstanding series.
I'm a thirteen-year-old girl and I'm very picky about my books. I don't just pick up any book and love it. But I saw the first book in this series at a secondhand bookstore nearby, and it looked good, so I bought it. I didn't know that this would become my favourite series. It was remarkably detailed, the characters are very well developed, and I was laughing and crying with them the whole way through the book. It's too bad I could only find half of the rest of the books. They are just awesome.

The greatest book in the world!
This book is so amazing. I couldnt stop reading it. I`m 14 years old and in 8th grade. I have never read such a book that moved me as much as that one. Wise-up Alex made me sooo worked up, I told my teacher to call me Sky. She is my favorite charactor. This book is extreamly relistic. I recomend it to everyone...wether your 6, 16, or 60! Its soooo great! -Allie

"The 11th Hour" Strategy Guide
This guide is essentially all anyone could ask for in a hint book. For players of "The 11th Hour" who need just the slightest nudge, to people who are so turned around they can't tell the kitchen from the library, this is the book for you. The first half contains the whole story, told from the perspective of Carl. Carl gives the reader a more in-depth look at the Stauf house, and provides some useful background information on the events of the previous game, "The 7th Guest." This narrative section will guide the reader in the right direction without giving away the actual solution to the puzzle currently being solved. It also clarifies what is currently happening in the game, in case the reader is having some difficulty following the twisted story line. It gives the various alternate endings an explanation, too, and warns which is the correct one so the reader doesn't spoil the surprise. After the narrative, the book contains the full solutions to the puzzles, the original script to the game, and an interview with the game's inventors. All in all, a wonderfully detailed book that is as thoroughly interesting to read as it is helpful.

a great help!
If anyone likes mind boggling games (well stradegy games at least), then you'll love the sequal to 7th guest! this book helps you get through all the puzzles and mazes which await you ahead! I love this game and the 7th Guest will always be my favorite game so this game is then my second fav! try it and you'll see for yourself!

A Wonderful Sampler of Shakespeare and his Times
This is a great little book. Reading it won't give you a master's degree in Shakespearean studies, but it will give you a quick and interesting overview of many different subjects. The chapters are brief and topical: a discussion of Shakespeare's origins in Stratford, life and politics in Elizabethan England and London's theatres offer a fascinating glimpse into Shakespeare's world and works. The second section of the book, "Documents", looks at some of the primary sources for our understanding of Shakespeare, both documents from Shakespeare's life (a contract, his will, the First Folio), but also writings by those who saw the original plays, discussions of theatrical productions through the ages, and criticism by centuries of academics from John Dryden's 17th century analysis to modern feminist approaches.

The Age of Shakespeare is the perfect weekend read for those who want a bit of context about the plays and their origins. It is informative without being heavy. The dozens of color plates and illustrations are gorgeous, and the writing is intelligent and clear. A wonderful sampler

A visual treat
The book, The Age of Shakespeare, takes my breath away! The many color prints and illustrations add beauty to a informative book. This is a well thought out book about Shakespeare and his times. I really enjoy reading it.

I loved the nostalgia!
The story of Alex brought me right back to my childhood in the 1950s and the wonderful times I had. I really loved the description of the corner candy store. Wow, when Alex stuck his arm in the cooler to fish out a bottle of soda pop, my arm tingled with memories of doing the same thing. Boy that water was cold!

Wonderful book!
Wonderful story! If you like scary stories, then this book is a "must read". If you like a warm relationship between a father and his son, then this book is a "must read". If you want to know what it was like growing up in 1950's America, then this book is a "must read". Heck, "Alex and The Kitten Monster" is a "must read" for any reason!

A superbly written novel for teens
Alex Jackson: Grommet by Pat Flynn is a superbly written novel for teens about Alex Jackson, a talented skateboarder who has to come to terms with a school bully, falling in love, and handling the social aspects of high school. Alex Jackson: Grommet is recommended as being an engagingly, deftly written story about handling common teenage trials.

Alex Jackson: grommet
Alex Jackson: grommet is about a 13-year-old skateboarder who lives in a tough suburb of Logan City, Australia. He is an ordinary boy with a wicked sense of humour-- and apart from his reputation as a skate-grom, does his best to fit in anonymously at his first year of high school.

Things change when he falls for the mysterious Becky Tonella and invokes the wrath of school tough-guy, Billy Johnstone. Through a mixture of luck and advice from his father, an ex-boxer, he manages to win both the fight and the girl. However, Billy swears revenge and Becky's life is slowly unravelling.

Pat Flynn understands what it is like to be a teenager and has produced a funny, fast-paced first novel. Short chapters and sentences that almost read themselves mean it won't scare away the slower readers. A real winner among 10-14 year-old boys, and girls.

Excellent resource for RIFTS
My friends and I use this as Rifts resource regularly. We use the alien races often and the weapons/equipment section, which offers generic items, literally dozens of them, minus the backfrouns and pics, so there's more bang per page. Probably a hundred guns, plus armor, bots. AND.. that means they can be given your own names, etc... This is an all rouns good books, even if I haven't done a great job presenting it. USEFUL INFO for once.

Aliens .vs. Superheroes
This is the best accessory to Heroes Unlimited. Everyone who plays superhero games has dreamed of taking the battles and wages of war beyond the planet Earth to Outer Space. Now you can wth the perfect addition and must for Heroes Unlimited players to give a switch and new turn to the game. If you are tired of the same old Superhero saves the city you should run or play this Role-Playing Game. I loved this because it gives new flavor to the Superhero world.

A comprehensive and readable guide
Alex Kosseff has written a fine guide to all aspects of outdoor leadership, with outstanding sections on risk management and the consensus method of decision-making. An important purchase for trip leaders whether new or experienced and definitely worth the wait caused by the delay in publication.

Enriching outdoor adventure
Alex Kosseff's Outdoor Leadership is a thoughtful and thorough review of the leadership qualities required for safe, fullfilling outdoor adventure. The book presents a balanced emphasis on the leader's need for hard or technical skills and soft skills such as dealing with group dynamics and caring for the participants. I read this book from the view of a parent who led his family on many wonderful wilderness adventures for which we were not completely prepared and found innumerable ideas that would have made the trips even more rewarding. Kosseff's use of stories from his own experiences and those of others tranforms a potentially dry subject into thoroughly enjoyable reading. The stories clearly illustrate the major points of the book.
Outdoor Leadership has a wealth of knowledge that will benefit an audience from adventuresome parents to professional guides.

The Anatomy of Power: European Constructions of the African Body
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (1998)
Authors: Alexander Butchart and Alex Butchart
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

A Brilliant Book!
A very sophisticated piece of work. With great insght into many medical/historical perceptions and social mechanisms!
Absolutely Stunning!

P.S: Looking forward to another one.

Inside Africa
A disquieting and destabilising experience is what I was left with after reading Butchart's Anatomy of Power. On beginning the book, I at first thought that it was just another social history, albeit incredibly detailed in its probing of what doctors did in the name of science. But, as a I read on, the commanding thesis of the work took ever greater shape, and by the end I was as convinced as Butchart is of the argument that without the socio-medical sciences there can be no bodies at all. This leaves one with a real dilemma in terms of what to do in terms of liberation and the struggle against oppression. While the book doesn't answer this key question, it surely poses it with a greater degree of lucidity and insight than many other books about Africa, colonialism and liberation.

Highly recommended!
