Social Theory: A Historical Introduction

Simply brilliant
This really deserves all the respect it can possibly get. Callinicos is THE perfect example of a hard-headed Marxist that is capable of making clear and convincing... Excellent...

Learning from the past
Alex Callinicos is one of the sharpest intellectuals around today. "Social Theory" is more than a good crib sheet for students of the European enlightenment. It shows how the great ideas of the past continue to exercise their power and relevance in the world we live in.

Against a fashionable postmodernism which arrogantly dismisses history as a phenomenon fragmented beyond our comprehension, Callinicos argues that particular strains within the enlightenment provide the theoretical means by which our societies can be both understood and transformed.

This book includes valuable discussions of every major social theorist of modernity-- Karl Marx, Max Weber, Frederick Nietzsche, and many others. The discussions of every theory are grounded in the polical history that influenced their development.

Finally, Callinicos-- himself a socialist-- defends a radical understanding of social change rooted in the classical marxist tradition.

Go from Tatooine and back and win it all!
If you want to be the racer who overcomes the odds and wins the pod race for honor and glory, get this guide!

Written for Nintendo but great for PC users
As a fifty year old father of an eight year old son, fascinated with Star Wars and a novice to computer games, I was delighted to find this guide. It not only steps one through strategies for game play but points out lots of terrific shortcuts and player tips. With well annotated maps of each course and clever backgrounds on the drivers and their engines, this books adds to the excitement of the pad race scenes from the Star Wars Episode One film. Only a few pages are specific to Nintendo, while most apply also to PC game players. Much more specific than the game's user manual with wonderful pictures and great advice. This was our first non-educational games (we had to purchases game controller, 3D accelerator and more memory) and our first game guide. I can't imagine we would have enjoyed the game as much without the guide. Bravo!

Up, Up, and Away!
This collection of Super Friends stories by E. Nelson Bridwell, Ramona Fradon, and Ric Estrada is a blast from start to finish! Solid super-hero stories without the angst of the modern anti-hero movement. Awesome stuff! Even better than the TV series that inspired it! This is a nice companion to DC Comics' The Batman Adventures and Justice League Adventures--some issues of which have been collected in the trade paperback format.

Superfriends Forever!!!
This book includes entire issues of the comic book series with additional info written by the original writers of the comics.
A fascinating journey back in time to many of our youths. This book is a must have for all DC Comics superhero fans.

Super Nezh: Chess Assassin
Published in Paperback by Thinkers Press (2000)

mind boggling combinations
I'm an average (1500) chess player, but I work hard at it. I've over 100 chess books, and this one is by far the best games book I've ever read. Nezh launches into dazzling but thoroughly visualized (by him) combinations that will inspire you to search for more in your own games, even if you can't see as far ahead as Nezh does. At every crucial stage there's a diagram which alerts you to analyze before you peek. This book is sure to strike terror in your opponents.

Awesome chess; sadly not a first-class production
First English-language book on the legendary R. Nezhmetdinov, famous for his attacking prowess (Polugaevsky-N., Sochi 1958 is on the short list of "greatest games", and N. defeated Tal in 3 shootouts). If the name doesn't immediately ring several bells, you *have* to study these beautiful and mind-boggling games! There's also considerable biographical material, and a few photos. Unfortunately, this book is not well edited, even by chess book standards. Two glaring examples from the very start of the book: 1) Game #2 includes the annotation "17. Bxe6?! The tempting Bishop sacrifice leads to the win, but should have lost the advantage," but no variation is given in which the advantage is lost; 2) The "An Appreciation" chapter contains the odd passage "It is the game Flohr-N., USSR ch 21, Kiev 1954... Flohr was in his prime and preparing to play a match with Alekhine..." [Flohr peaked in the 1930s, and Alekhine died in 1946!] Apparently this is based on a misinterpretation of IM Rashid Ziyatdinov's original text (he contributed this introductory chapter). While Ziyatdinov's English is not fluent, this should call for more editing rather than less... Author Alex Pishkin's untimely death in 1999 may partially excuse the unpolished MS, but the subject deserves better treatment!

The Tall Ship in Art

The Tall Ship in Art
This is the greatest book I ever found about ancient ship painting. It took me such a long time to find this kind of wonderful book. It is a must buy for a marine painting lover or artist

A superb portrait of the classic age of sail
The clarity and color of the reproductions of marine paintings in this book are nothing less than superb. While the individual styles and, to some extent, the specific subject matter of the five artists vary, I find it impossible to single out any one of them as being "better" than the others. Each is a highly talented artist who brings the past to life in a most convincing manner. While men-of-war are probably the most frequent subject of the paintings in this book, merchant vessels and ships of exploration and even of pleasure are not neglected. It is pure joy to just leaf through this volume and gaze at the wealth of images. Anyone who is fascinated by the sea and sailing ships cannot fail to be enchanted by this book.

Webs Solidly Woven

Poetry as it was meant to be
The poems in this collection are so completely opposite in content, but each is so meaningful. I was particularly impressed with "Unspoken Message to Mother." The deep feelings came through so strongly with so much love and compassion that the words seemed to take over the page in a rhythm and harmony that hyptonize the reader. The writer has an uncanny ability to delicately handle personal episodes through very expressive poetry. Stanza two of the poem, describing the beauty and usefulness of her hands is so deeply moving that it almost brought me to tears. The lines are so clearly defined and punctuation so carefully placed that it makes for easy poetic reading and understanding. All in all, it is a poem full of passion and love, and that sets it apart. The poems related to social problems... homelessness, loneliness, and aging have a special touch. The poet has a personal awareness that provides uncanny insight into the lives of those about whom he writes. This book was a very rewarding read. I hope we see more of this poet.

Touches All the Bases
Mr. Bussey has compliled a lifetime of thoughts.His choice of words, his heartfelt descriptions and the way he relates to many generations are truly delightful. There are several phrases to be heard and remembered long after. "An umbrella of life" covers current and future descendents...what is man "but a memory." The only thing better than reading these poems is hearing Mr. Bussey read.

Concise and informative
In 255 pages, the three authors cover all of the new features of Visual FoxPro 7. This is not just a laundry-list of features, but includes explanations of *why* the feature is useful and many include examples to help you "get it." Unlike the glittering tailfins of the cover art, the new features are important. Major features covered include chapters on:
* IntelliSense
* Editor Enhancements
* New and Better Tools
* More IDE Changes
* Data Enhancements
* OOP Enhancements
* Strings (text-merge and parsing)
* Resource Management
* Arrays
* Bits and Pieces
* Building Component-based Software

* Working with Web Services

This is a great book to help 6.x and earlier VFP developers get up to speed quickly, and a good resource for those new to the language to understand the most recent additions.

Pouty, yet provocative
This useful guide introduces the latest FoxPro features and is a charming addition to any developer's library.

Big, Cool Frog Pictures
This fun little book is filled with big, detailed image of frogs from every stage, from egg to frog, It does an excellent job at showing the different levels of growth of tadpoles. There are some nice shots of tadpoles with legs starting to sprout.

There are no more than 16 words per page, making it reader-friendly for ages 5-7.

I fully recommend "Where Do Frogs Come From."

Anthony Trendl

very neat science easy reader
My son is 7 and he read this book at the library to me while we were doing a unit on frogs. The book had get real frog pictures. Also the book only had a few words per page so it's great for begining readers. Lot of great info in the book as well!
