Delightful and EASY Chinese Cooking!
This cookbook, by experienced author Eng Tie Ang, who's also written books on Thai, Tofu, Brazilian, and Vietnamese Cooking, is a joy to use for busy people! Recipes are limited to one page or shorter, and her directions are clear and easy to follow. She is also trained in nutrition, which often dictates her choice of ingredients--a departure from many ethnic cookbooks, which often display no regard for health consequences. The recipes are delicious. Ms. Ang's own multi- national background obviously influenced her choices among the many available in Chinese cuisine. They are carefully tested by her own family, friends, including this reviewer, and classes. I have given this book to many friends, and always received happy reviews! It will appeal to both novice and experienced cooks, and you cannot help but leave the table happy!

Design and Destiny: The Making of the Tucker Automobile

A Look at the Making of the Tucker Automobile
A little more than 50 years ago, Philip Egan, a young design engineer, had the opportunity to be part of Preston Tucker's dream. As a junior member of the New York based Lippincott team which helped design the prototype car, Egan took very careful notes of his first exposure to a full scale automotive design probject.

Where other books have focused on the drama of the human triumph and tragedy, Egan's focus is the car. However, the appeal of Design and Destiny reaches far beyond those interested only in the Tucker. The basic principles of automotive design are well illustrated. For those interested in creativity, the book provides valuable insight. Though other books and countles articles have been published on the Tucker saga, I believe Design and Destiny is something very special

A Hugely Successful Synthesis
Alex S. MacLean is an architectural geologist with an impressionist's eye for composition and light. He is a pilot and a gifted photographer as well. The consistently fascinating imagery he has has created by fusing all these talents into a rigorous and aesthetically gorgeous body of work is on splendid display within the pages of Designs On The Land which ably demonstrates how uniquely important an aerial vertex is to a complete understanding of human interaction with the planet Earth. I recently drove thousands of miles through the high desert southwest and had a marvelous opportunity to appreciate that landscape from a mostly horizontal vertex. What a revelation to see the same tableaux from above! So much that is only hinted at at ground level reveals itself completely from above. The central thesis of Designs On The Land is that human transformation of the environment is among the most revealing indicators of man's developmental and evolutionary status. By extension, aerial views of the results of man's activities on the land provide a powerful tool for interpreting and understanding this interaction. As with any authentic synthesis, Designs On The Land functions on many levels simultaneously. Most significantly, the images presented in this critically important portfolio are simply beautiful and moving; both compositionally and as sophisticated studies in shadow, light and color. But aside from the captivating imagery, this volume contains a wealth of data that provide for informed consideration of land use protocols, environmental degradation and pollution, and the shifting utilization of land over time, to name but a few of topics taken up here. To quote from the introduction by James Corner, "What one sees from the air, then, are not merely attractive patterns and forms but great metabolic scaffoldings of material transformation, transmission, production and consumption. The country is an enormous working quarry, an operational network of exchange and mobility. To appreciate the essential character of the American landscape, it is first necessary to understand how its appearance is less an evolving expression than it is an activating agent of American ways of life and other material practices...The implicit subjectivity in the content of Alex MacLean's photographs reveals not only the strange working beauty of this busy, ongoing inhabiting of America, but also its potential for modern design and planning to create even more spectacular environments-this time for on the ground reception and effect as well as from the air."

Deviant Behavior

Thio's Ideas Stand Test of Time
I had this book assigned to me to fulfill the requirements of a college level course about 20 years ago. I thought it would be about people we would tend to instantly label "socially deviant". I was wrong--the book changed my way of thinking about the way we label others, how "deviant" the acts of people in socially responsible positions can be, and the effect our tolerance of this behavior can have upon our world as a whole.

This is high praise, and well deserved. The only downside (as some may see it) is that, after digesting the book, one is forced to look at the circumstances in one's own life where a choice may be made to act against what, at some level, is known to be "best behavior". Yes, we can each be quite capable of deviant behaviors. When we stop limiting our perceptions regarding just what "deviant behavior" is, the better we understand that attending to our own ethical standards with diligence and awareness can address some of the "deviance problems" our society suffers most from--those that emerge not from any "underclass", but from the ranks of the so-called middle and upperclasses. They can be the breeding ground for some of the most pervasive and insidious problems afflicting society as a whole, and the hardest to control. The suffering brought on by "white collar" or corporate criminality/negligence is as great as acts deemed to be more obviously abnormal, and every bit as real. But many know nothing of this, because, as Thio states, who is watching the watchdogs? And those who know, often for many reasons fail to act. Thio roots out a true human dilemma, and challenges us to examine it.

This book was so memorable that I have quoted its premise frequently in business and other contexts, and here I am --searching to see if it is still available. I am glad it is.

Wonderful - An Instant Classic!
A fantastic overview of the principles of layout and how to understand space and "the page", with special concern for the issue of functional white space and learning how to activate it, sculpt it, and not waste it. In a milieu of visual clutter, this gift to the design world (if its message is taken to heart) will help restore order and readability in the communications that surround us.

This book is written for one, who wants to know more about Tantric Buddhism. It is a study about the Mahavairocana Abisambhodi Tantra, or abbreviated as Mahavairocana Sutra. You can read here the origin of fire ritual (Homa), the meaning of Sankrit syllables, which perform the Dharani, and also the translation of first and second chapter of the Mahavairocana Sutra (but not the complete translation of the Sutra) This book also compare the chapters between the Tibetan and Chinese translation of the Sutra.
