Great book
I love the short stories. The poetry is also really well written. It's not like anything I've read from any new writers. He's more experimental, but he's not inaccessible.

Astounding!
This book is so well written, I'm at a loss for words. He writes as if he were forty years older than he is. like he's been places and seen things in a million other lives. I forgot poetry was supposed to transport you places.

Marquez?
I've had this book on my shelf ever since the Village Voice put Rux on the cover as one of their writers on the verge of shaking up the literary landscape. I just never got around to reading it and then lent it out and never got it back. Recently I ordered the second edition, distributed by Autonomedia.org and this time I READ it and I thought I was reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez...if I had known this book was this impressive, I would've read it the first time. Few young poets today have Rux's ability to create images as vibrant as he does. It's the stories in this book that impress me the most!

Paroles et Lumieres-Where Light Speaks: Haiti

Haiti - an enchanting depiction
This book provides powerful, beautiful photography, sensitive narrative, and original poetry. It respects the country, its culture and its language. It has a depth not expected in "table top" books. It is the number one book on my gift list this year! (not found in most book stores). Wonderful -

Beautiful book
I lived in Haiti for 18 years and I must say that this book does a wonderful job of portraying Haiti. If you've ever traveled to Haiti or lived there, this book will bring back fond memories. If you've never been to Haiti, you might find yourself longing to visit. This book will help you see why so many people who visit Haiti end up falling in love with it despite the fact that it's one of the poorest, most destitute countries in the world.

Breathtaking Photography, Moving Poetic Verse
I am the adoptive mom of a little Haitian girl. The other night we went to a church to hear a missionary speak about Haiti, and this gorgeous book was on the missionary's display table as a way of showing Americans the beauty of the people in that desperate land. Though we have plenty of photographs ourselves from my husband's trip there in 1997 (to finalize the adoption and bring our daughter home) we were deeply moved by the professional photography in this book. It shows the poverty, yes, but it also shows beauty and community, the natural splendor of the land and the warmth of a people so ravished by the cruelty of their government, but still able to smile. This is a book of hope, and a book of brilliant color, and a book which shows the strength of the Haitian people. Each gorgeous photo has an accompanying poetic verse in Creole and in English. A truly lovely book....

Principles of Economics
Published in Paperback by Libertarian Press (1994)
Author: Carl Menger
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

The Aristotelian Economist
Probably due to his study of Aristotle, Menger was meticulous in forming his economic principles from observations of reality. Thus he looked at man and his nature, and drew appropriate conclusions (much like philosopher Ayn Rand). Contrast this to the Platonist floating abstrations of modern mainstream economics.

Note that Menger's principles are fundamental and therefore basic. He creates an excellent foundation and starting point for further study of economics. Unfortunately few economists have adopted his fundamental method and approach to economics (even the Austrians veered away). Yet this is the most promising path an economist could take.

One example of the way Menger can spur a re-checking of premises: Menger disputed Adam Smith's assertion that division of labor was the fundamental cause of human economic progress- Menger announced that the most fundamental cause of human economic progress was a growing knowledge of the causal connections required to make goods, combined with the ability to act on that knowledge. A fantastic observation.

These truly are the "principles" of economics!
In this masterful work, Menger manages to precede works in several other disciplines. For examples, Menger's implied heirarchy of needs substantially precedes Maslow's famous theory on that topic. Menger's pre-requisites for a thing to become a good are the foundation for the bulk of modern marketing (at least, modern marketing that is of any value to consumers), and his explanation of exchange is vastly superior to the robotic theories offered by Jevons, Marshall, and the other predecessors of modern mainstream economic thought. I require all of my students to read this book, and they come away with an appreciation for Menger's complex and subtle thought (although they hate the Germanic twisting of the language!). If only I could get my colleagues to read this book....

Real economics clearly explained!
In his Principles, Menger states clearly that the conditions for something to be a good are (reinterpreted by myself):1-There must be a neccesity(or, more propely, a desire of any kind to be satisfied). 2- The thing must serve to satisfy that neccesity(or, again, the individual must at least believe that it does so) and 3.- The individual must be aware of the relationship between his need and the thing which is able to satisfy it. When such conditions get together in a scarce thing, we speak of an economic good, to which the individual assigns subjective value depending on the degree of satisfaction of a particular need that a unit of the good provides. There is no such a thing as an objective value, and this basic idea hasn't been perceived by many still in the 20th century. May Menger's book serve as a remedy to those misleading( and source of so many mistakes)interpretations.

Excellent book for concerned parents!
With any journey or task in life, a guide is beneficial in making the experience more enjoyable. Dr. Metzger's book is an excellent guide to raising children/teens in the new millennium. The book is extremely easy to read, arranged according to the most common behavioral problems children experience while growing up. The book suggests actions a concerned parent should take with their child, and also cautions which actions to avoid as well. Dr. Metzger's advice is simple, straightforward and easy for anyone to follow.

I feel "The Secret to Happy Children & Grandchildren" is an indispensable guide for any concerned parent or guardian. If you've ever wondered how to help your child through a difficult time, this is the book for you!

Here I go again!
At age 57, I became a parent again to my two young grandchildren. I decided that I better do some reading to brush up on my parenting skills that I haven't had to use for a while. I honestly was relieved to find Dr. Metzger's book. His writing style was so easy to read. I found his "What to Do" and "What Not to Do" sections on each topic interesting and informative. But it's the Discussion section that I really like. To me understandng a problem or situation is really the key to being a good parent. By the end of the day with my grandkids I really don't have a lot of spare time to read. That's why I like this particular book. Whether I'm reading about anger or stealing or eating problems, Dr. Metzger gets right to the point.

I highly recommend this book to all parents and grandparents or anyone who comes in contact with children or adolescents.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
Finally...a guide on parenting that makes sense! As a teacher working with troubled youngsters and as a woman looking forward to one day raising my own children, I have found this guide to be indispensable. Dr. Metzger's wisdom shines through in this easy-to-read guide, which I find myself referring to on a daily basis. Although many of the subtopics are aimed at working with younger children, Dr. Metzger provides assistance and inspiration for children of all ages. Thank you for making such an amazing guide available to teachers and parents! -Lesley Shinay (middle school teacher)

Exceptionally lucid and moving
I, too, read this book in one sitting. Abramson's exploration of memory is remarkable in its ability to convey entire universes of emotion and pain through a single detail. She retrieves those details despite the risks memory must pose and the temptation to forget, and presents them to the reader with empathy -- for us, for her family, and for the child she once was. Her approach to storytelling -- through snapshots and isolated scenes -- perfectly mirrors the personality characteristic that lies at the heart of her book: what happens when narrative, the way humans tell stories about themselves and make connections with others, breaks down. I was not quite the same person after reading this book. I highly recommend it.

Loved it!
Deb Abramson has written what we all need to read: the truth. By turns poignant and funny, this memoir brings us into the world of a girl with incredible insight and show us how she managed to grow up. It was so refreshing to read something real for a change, instead of the slick stuff we're too often fed. I highly recommend this book.

Poignant and Lyrical
Deb Abramson's memoir is beautifully crafted. She shares intimate family details with strong, descriptive writing. There are many well-chosen scenes and moments that will stay in your memory for a long time. When my husband and I finished chapter one, we had an argument about who was going to read the book first. Difficult to put down and inspiring to read.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story, beautifully produced tape.
We have just listened to the audio book of "Stickeen" produced by Mara Purl and thoroughly enjoyed the story! I have already told my daughter and she is anxiously waiting for my next "care package," because I told her I would be sure to enclose the tape of "Stickeen" so she can enjoy it also. The story was wonderful and it was so beautifully produced with music and sound effects. I will look for some of Muir's other stories to enjoy, especially if Haven Books Audio does some more.

Engaging, captivating and heart wrenching!
I found the audio tape to be a great source of entertainment. My imagination was captivated. It's a great source of family entertainment, personal journey and pure fun.

Great entertainment when you're driving.
Our family loves to travel by car. In a huge state like Alaska, there's plenty to see, but not much to listen to on the radio, as stations are few and far between. One of the best things we listened to on our trip was "Stickeen," the remarkable dog story by John Muir. We loved Lee Salisbury's voice, and the beautiful music on the tape. This was an hour that flew by, and a few dollars well-spent. We're sending copies to all our relatives.

Tagalog-English, English-Tagalog (Pilipino) Dictionary : A Language of the Philippines

MONEY WELL-SPENT FOR THIS BOOK
This dictionary is excellent. It is clear, concise, informative. The short introduction of Tagalog grammar made it user-friendly. It has been a vital tool for me, as a reference, when I am translating Tagalog utterances to English. This dictionary reflects the compiler's remarkable prudence with his work.

Excellent Dictionary
If you're going to purchase a Tagalog-English dictionary for travel, school..or just because you want to learn more about the language, BUY THIS ONE! This is truly the best Tagalog-English dictionary out there, and the price is just right. It not only serves as a dictionary, but it includes traditional folk songs, useful sayings/phrases..etc.

A rich and compact Tagalog-English-Tagalog dictionary
I have the classic Tagalog-English dictionaries: José V. PANGANIBAN's (1972), Vito C. SANTOS's (1978), Leo J. ENGLISH's (1986). Of course this dictionary cannot compare with them, but it is the best value for money. It even contains words that are not entered in the classics. It is umpteen notches above the other "small" dictionaries - most of them being worthless. I am so satisfied with Rubino's Tagalog-English-Tagalog dictionary that I'll buy a second copy to be used when travelling in the Philippines.

One of his best
_Analytical Psychology_ is one of the most succinct, miserly, and potent of all of Carl Jung's works. Most if not all of Jung's most important concepts are crammed into this slim volume. For experienced readers of nonfiction philosophy and psychology, this might be the best place to start reading Jung, especially if all you want is a crash-course in Jung's most important ideas. This is by no means an introductory-level book. For beginners, I would recommend Jung's masterpiece, _Modern Man in Search of a Soul_ (although that one's only slightly easier). _Analytical Psychology_ is for people who are already familier with Jung and want to reach the apex of his psychology, or for experienced readers who want to lean as much as possible about Jungian psychology in as little time as possible. Be forewarned that this book is extremely dense, yet this is a result of the inherent complexity of the subject matter, and not so much a result of bad writing or bad translation. Overall, I would say the knowledge contained in this book is well worth the effort. This book is packed with useful information that can actually improve the quality of your life, increase understanding and control of situations, decrease neurosis, and lead to overall enlightenment. Highly recommended.

Theoretical depth
This is one of Jung's finest although it makes some demands on the cerebral capacity of the reader. Its main benefit is that the Jungian notions here comes out in their full theoretical depth. It's imperative, namely, to get a thorough and deep understanding of Jungian psychology, otherwise you haven't understood it at all. Jungian psychology is plagued by this problem that the notions are shallowly understood. Not even the very central concept of the archetype is rightly understood in many quarters. But here Jung takes us to the deepest layers of his thinking. The archetype is described as a living complex within the psyche of the individual, as a reasonably autonomous personality with a certain conscious luminosity of its own. This goes for the god-complex, too, although, Jung underlines, this doesn't disprove the existence of a transcendental God. This book handles many important questions and constitutes in fact a survey of Jungian psychology: personal and collective unconscious, anima and animus, transcendental function, etc. As this book is Jungian psychology in a nutshell it could be recommended as introductory, provided that the reader is theoretically adept. In fact, I really recommend taking on this book early when studying Jung in order to avoid shallow miscomprehensions of his psychology. However, as the book thoroughly treats questions concerning the encounter with the unconscious, such as phenomena arising from the assimilation of the unconscious, it is very much directed towards professionals. This book will satisfy the appetite of any person with a theoretical disposition. /Mats W

Advanced Basic Jung
This work is a comprehensive overview of Jung's major theories. The first essay reviews Jung's major discoveries concerning the unconscious contents of the human psyche: the personal and collective unconscious, Archetypes, and general approaches to including them in conscious awareness. The second essay deals with the specific issues involved in making the unconscious part of human consciousness through a process he called individuation.

In this work Jung suggests that there is a way for modern humans of Western descent to rekindle an experience with the unknown, transcendent reality. He challenges readers to reexamine their assumptions and preconceptions. He urges readers to examine their own experiences and to analyze them without prejudice or preconception, and Jung reports what he has discovered by so doing.

This volume is recommended to anyone who is ready to move to the next level in their reading of Jung; anyone who is involved with a process of psychological transformation and would like some guidance from a non-religious, "scientific" source, and anyone who desires an overview of Jung in his own words. Those unfamiliar with Jung's work might find this volume a bit intimidating.

know thy Self
in my humble opinion, Ramana Maharshi was one of the greatest saints of the modern era. in this precious little book he speaks to us from the viewpoint of eternal Brahman, the ground of all being. this wonderful little book is a collection of questions his many visitors would ask. his answers are as close to true knowledge of the Divine as anything i've ever heard or seen. this book is an excellent introduction to the sublime words and methods of this modern saint. this could be a very important guide for the sincere spiritual aspirant who wants to finally know his or her true identity. these truths can take us where knowledge is known by direct perception and words alone utterly fail us.....

Everyday Reflection
There are times in our lives that we need spiritual healing. Hungrily, we seek for self-discovery. We want to know how our
soul and the spiritual world can comfort us when we are so
vulnerable and want to seek an intellectual understanding on
self, mind, spirit, reality, truth and God. While there are
million books written for this very purpose, a simple dialogue
of Maharishi gives us a the basic guidlines about nature and
our existence. It is comforting to read, regardless of ones

previous beliefs about religion. It is a book to return over
and over again.
It is good soul food for students, couples and self-inquirer who seeks peace and harmony.

The Central Gist of Sage Ramana's Teachings
This is the central source book of all Sage Ramana's teachings. It is concise, clear, precise and to the point. The core of the Sages teaching is in Chapter One titled: "Who am I?" Sage Ramana rarely wrote instructions for spiritual seekers. "Who am I?" was compiled by a seeker Mr. Pillai around 1900. It is an invaluable Jewel to establish "THE TRUE IDENTITY".

We typically identify our selves with the body, mind and intellect. When asked by some one we say "I am so and so, 6ft tall, 180 lbs, doctor, accountant, son of so and so, grand daughter of so and so, resident of Texas etc." We are sick, happy, sad and poor etc. We seek happiness in the material world. All these are modifications of our mind and psyche. Play of the psycho-somatic apparatus. The true source of PEACE and HAPPINESS is to know your "Real and True IDENTITY." Sage Ramana says in the very first page of "Who am I?" that you negate all these forms of false identifications and what remains is "Pure Conciousness." This PURE CONCIOUSNESS devoid of modifications is the gateway to the heart of "TRUE IDENTITY." You are Pure Awareness. Awareness is infinite, eternal, free from concepts of space-time and is "THE ULTIMATE SPIRIT." We can signify it by "Existence-Conciousness-Happiness." "I am 'I'" is Self-Realization. Nothing else. Plain and Simple. "BE". There is no light to see in your meditation, no extra sensory perceptions, no reading palms! If you are trying to become or becoming something "you are mid-stream and sharks are circling around." Give up these gimmicks and don't be taken away from the "ETERNAL TRUTH."

The book also contains a number of chapters where questions posed by sincere seekers and the pertinent answers given by the sage are cataloged, edited and presented clearly.

This is a masterpiece that beckons: "ALL in ONE and ONE in ALL." Your religious faith could be Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Agnostic ...what ever "ism" you like. The "SAGE ESTABLISED IN THE ONE REALITY" beckons you with warm smile and open heart. Open your heart and SEEK the final PEACE & HAPPINESS. Here and Right Now.

A maestro!
If you love wildlife art that shows every hair, whisker or feather of a wild creature and every blade of grass, leaf or branch in the "background", Carl Brenders is your man. His work is technically brilliant and acutely observed, resulting in paintings that are more real than reality.

This man can draw! There are a few pencil sketches included in the book. They are a little looser than his impeccable paintings and they appeal to me more than the paintings.

So much art is a matter of taste - I am awe struck by the patience Brenders must possess in order to produce these images, but I personally prefer a more spontaneous approach. I subscribe to James McNeill Whistler's view: "To say of a picture, as is often said in its praise, that it shows great and earnest labour, is to say that it is incomplete and unfit for view." Brenders manages to achieve a fusion of "great and earnest labour" (he must take months to do each painting!) and creative excellence. That's the only reason why I give a four- and not five-star rating! It's just a little TOO slick for my taste.

The layout of this book is clean and fresh, allowing his detailed paintings lots of white space. Accompanying the paintings is a brief commentary from the artist. This text reinforces the artist's absolute love of his subject.

Fantastic Example !
If you are not a collector of wildlife paintings or limited edition fine art work yet, you definitely will be after you see these images. Many people belive these are only photos. Carl Brenders captures so much detail in his paintings, most are fooled who do not know of his works. From the finest feathers of a golden eagle's head to the glass-like eyes of a Canadian Lynx to lichen and moss on rocks and trees.
I have been an art dealer for many years and still am in awe at his paintings and prints. It is truly amazing that someone has the ability to represent wildlife in such a way.

My favorite artist
Carl Brenders is a fantastic artist. I had his calendar hanging in my office and people thought his drawings were photographs. This is an excellent book of his works.
