A Guided Tour to Carl Jung
This is a biography of Carl Jung (1875-1961), but so much more than that. It traces his life and professional development, drawing on letters and extensive quotes from the Collected Works. It is profusely illustrated, not only with photographs of Jung and the relevant people and places in his life, but also with his drawings. After Jung's break with Freud in the early 1910's, Jung went through a about a decade of professional isolation and rich personal growth. During that time, he kept a journal called the "Red Book", which he decorated with drawing and paintings based on his dreams and active imagination. Many striking images from the Red Book are reproduced in this volume: a drawing of Philemon, Jung's inner spiritual guide; the viscerally disquieting "Meeting with the Shadow"; and a singularly captivating image, "The Light at the Heart of Darkness". Photos of Jung in his travels and at his house in Bollingen round out this engaging visual tour of Jung's contribution. This is a wonderful introduction to Jung's life and work, especially for someone of an artistic inclination.

mind-blowing, dogma-shattering
A very fine collection...with plenty of glimpses at Jung's trans-analytic speculations and personal reactions. Soulful and, in places, very funny too.

I second Griebel....
...you must have this; there are treasures here you won't find anywhere else. One of the finest collections of Jung and Jungiana I've seen.

A must! if you are interested in Jung.
A must! if you are interested in C.G. Jung and his psychology.

Why is "C.G. Jung Speaking" a must?

FIRST OF ALL, simply because the Collected Works doesn't include the information found here. These are not works of Jung, but the works of others--interviews, characterizations etc. In other words, you will find some information here which you could only dig out with great difficulty, scattered in numerous works.

SECOND, in the interviews Jung is sometimes caught off-guard by a surprise question, and so, forced to develop on the aspects of his theories that he may perhaps have though self-explanatory.

THIRD, you see Jung through the eyes of others -- Esther Harding, Charles Baudoin, Michael Fordham, Charles Lindbergh, and others.

Some subjects, touched upon in this book:

- Jung's own type, according to his typology (Introvert. And Thinking, Intuition, Sensing/Perception, and Feeling, in that order)

- Freud's type (extravert--hence his pleasure principle)

- Adler's type (introvert--hence his power complex)

- The psychology of dictators (Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and, yes, Roosewelt)

- The nature of intuition

- introvert vs. extravert intuitives

- Creative achievement

- Jung's breaking with Freud.

- Jung and Nazism/anti-Semitism (Jung defends himself in December 1949)

And the somewhat transcendent questions:

- God

- death and life after death

- astrology and alchemy

Edited by William McGuire, executive editor of the Collected Works (CW), in collaboration with R.F.C. Hull, translater of CW, it is no surprise to find that this excellent book contains numerous references to CW, as well as a comprehensive index.

Captains of the Wilderness: The American Revolution on the Western Frontiers
Published in Hardcover by Tiger Rose Pub Co (1986)
Author: Carl R Baldwin
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $50.00
Average review score:

Very readable, makes history come alive
Mr. Baldwin's book was very readable. It was a telling and insightful look at a most important time in American history. I only wish my high school American history classes talked more about the everyday lives of real people; I would have remembered a lot more about the Revolution other than Washington crossed the Delaware! As a direct descendant of Captain Piggot(t), it was all the more fascinating to me.

Captains of the Wilderness by Carl Baldwin
This book made the revolution, the frontier and my ancestors come alive for me. Carl Baldwin is a storyteller in the grand sense of the word. If I would have had history teachers like this, all of my classmates would have went into politics, teaching or writing. Mr. Baldwin, may he rest in peace, was a meticulous researcher. His description of the period was excellent, as was his knowledge of the characters. As I read, I followed his characters to the American revolutionary warfront and back. On the frontier, I followed the author up and down the Missippi. The characters are as big as life. Not only has he told us about the heroes we already know about, he has painted a portrait of my courageous, steady and true ancestors, Captain James Piggott and his wife, Frances James Piggott. Frances is a real life heroine and I am proud to be descended from her. I loved the book and I am so grateful that Carl Baldwin wrote it.

I love this book!
Aside from the fact a reader will gain new appreciation for the Larssons and their art, a reason to purchase this book is that it is gorgeous. Good paper, excellent color reproductions, a nice heft. If you admire Larsson and Scandinavian culture, this book is a "must have."

This book makes me happy.
I ordered this book sight-unseen as a gift, and thought "well, I like Carl Larsson's paintings, I'll get one for myself while I'm at it." I'm so glad I did! I realize that, before reading this delicious book, I had never really "seen" a Carl Larsson painting before. I didn't know that all those happy Swedish ninteenth-century domestic watercolor scenes actually documented Larsson's home and family, and I had no idea that his wife Karin was the creator of the fabrics, co-creator of the furniture and equal partner in what is not only a beautiful and original home environment, but one that has influenced interior design to this day, a hundred year later.

The text is written by different experts. I am not really sure that I come away from it with much sense of the Larssons' personalities in a detailed way, but the work speaks for itself and I consider this book to be more than just a valuable addition to my art library, but also as a great read and, even more -- a great "look".

Individual chapters address a range of issues
Carl B. Stokes And The Rise Of Black Political Power by Leonard N. Moore (Assistant Professor of History and Director of the African and African American Studies Program, Louisiana State University) is a meticulous portrayal of Mayor Carl Stokes of Cleveland and the impact his tenure has had on local and national African-American politics. Individual chapters address a range of issues such as "the making of a mayor"; black capitalism; internal political power struggles; and much, much more. A well-researched and scholarly examination of executive government in microcosm in general, and its reflections in the broader scope of African-American politics in particular, Carl B. Stokes And The Rise Of Black Political Power is a welcome and highly recommended addition to academic Black Studies and Political Science reference collections and reading lists.

well worth the money
Having seen the retrospective at the McNay art institute in San Antonio, The book does an incredible job of recreating the actual works. The paintings are very inspiring and transport you to a more peacful time and place

Intriguing
Extremely well-written retrospective of the artist's work. Embrey's work (especially his work with window images) is nicley captured through the full-color plates. The writer of this book took extreme care in developing a clear picture of the artist and his artistic vision.

The Absolute Authority in Taxonomy of Fishes
This book is a must for any Ichthyologist! An invaluable reference!

Catalog of Fishes
If anyone seriously thinks taxonomy is dead, let them review this masterly trio of tomes, each the size of a large city's phonebook. The authors have scanned the world literature to provide lists of all known scientific names for fishes--through about 1996--including synonomies, status, location of types, and other pertinent information. A labour of love that all ichthyologists will benefit from. Comes with a CD-ROM version that, alas, get 2 stars because its program code is too old to handle so much data without serious glitching. Indispensible to anyone doing systematics, biodiversity, or even legislation for fishes. Pricey, but well worth its cost in real, long-term value. Only question: How will it be ammended/updated?

Characterization Techniques and Tabulations for Organic Nonlinear Optical Materials
Published in Hardcover by Marcel Dekker (01 May, 1998)
Authors: Mark G. Kuzyk and Carl William Dirk
Amazon base price: $275.00
Average review score:

Best Nonlinear Optics of Materials Book
The book's description of how to do nonlinear optical experiments is outstanding. I have never seen a book that explains how measurements are done and how one can relate measurements to susceptibilities. These kinds of details are never described in journal articles and can usually be found only in hard-to-find Ph.D. dissertations. Many of the chapters are written by the experts that invented the measurement techniques being discussed, so this book gives you an inside track. The first three chapters very nicely present the theory that is used in the rest of the book. Given that each chapter is written by a different group of people, the book fits together nicely. This is the one book I would choose to take to a desert island because it has all the basics. A must buy for anyone interested in the cutting edge of materials nonlinear optics.

This book has everything about nonlinear optics of Materials
This book is one of the best resources I've seen. Nonlinear optical properties are tabulated and experimental techniques are described. Chapter 3 is an extremely useful treatment of the relationship between molecular and bulk properties and includes lots of stuff that's never been published anywhere else. I use it as a reference all the time. The book is pricey but worth every penny.

The Christmas Note

Wonderful story for all ages.
I think that anything Cathie Pelletier writes would be beautiful, and she's proven it again by taking on someone else's childhood story of a Christmas visit from Santa, to a poor child in Kentucky. You and your kids will really love this poignant tale.

THE Christmas book to give to children
Skeeter Davis, the greatest of Grand Old Opry female vocalists, has written an unforgettable children's Christmas book based on her own childhood. This is THE book to give to children for Christmas - about the true meaning of Christmas versus material gifts. The children you love could scarcely have a better role model than the wonderful Miss Davis, truly one of the most beautiful souls around and a great human being.

Grim espionage adventure in the citadel of Iuz
At last! Welcome to the City of Skulls, the demoniac realm of Iuz himself. Here, the daring heroes (levels 9-12) must do the impossible - fight or sneak their way into the city, and into the dungeons below, to rescue a favored spy in the name of the King of Furyondy! Of course, it's even harder (and more fun) than they suspect... a classic Greyhawk adventure, huge and hard to find.

This is one of the most dangerous adventures ever.
This adventure is one of the bright spots of TSR's "From the Ashes" line of Greyhawk Adventures products. The party is hired to sneak into Dorakaa, the home city of Iuz the Evil, the half-demon Lord of Pain. The place is overrun with demonic creatures and Iuz's horrible clergy. The action is far from linear, and the adventure has the feel of a James Bond film. The most innovative aspect of this adventure is an excellent notoriety system to deal with characters or parties who make too much commotion during their stay. This adventure is good for any type of player, but the characters had better be well-equipped and ready for hordes of demons and undead.
