A phenomenal resource
I do online marketing and because of my knowledge of the internet, am often asked to do research projects, as well.

Schlein's book is a wonderful resource and is proving to be a great time-saver for me in my work. I highly recommend it to anyone who uses the internet as a research tool, or simply wants to find information quickly and easily.

The Perfect Online Research Guide for Beginners
This book deserves more than 5 stars for making the Internet fully accessible to anyone for a minimum of cost in time and money.

If you have enough skill to turn on your computer and get onto the Internet, this book will take you where you want to go in the fastest, least frustrating way. Within hours, you will be more efficient and effective than people who have done online research for years, but have not yet read this book.

Although Web addresses and sites will change, the best basic methods of how to do research online will shift much less often. You should be able to apply what you learn from this book for some time to come.

Some of the many helpful things you will learn include:

(1) which search engines work best for which kinds of questions

(2) how to get the fewest possible sites from a search with the greatest likelihood that they will be helpful to you

(3) which sources of information to go to directly without a search first

(4) how to assess the credibility of a source

(5) how to get things for free that most people pay for

(6) when to spend money to save time

(7) how to manage your e-mail to spend less time on it.

You will also benefit from three sample search models in chapter 12, one for finding a person, another for doing a business profile, and a third for problem solving. Most of your searches will involve one of these three search types.

An area you may not think about now is what people can learn about you while you do your research. The sections on privacy issues and how you can protect yourself are outstanding.

About a third of the book is devoted to indexes to make it easier for you to find government public records and the right Web site for your research needs.

Even though I have been doing online research for many years, I plan to keep this book next to my computer from now on. If you read many of my reviews, you will notice that that is something I rarely say about a book.

After you have finished learning how to do better and faster online research with this wonderful resource, I suggest that you step back and think about new questions that you should be asking now that you have improved access to good and timely information. For example, should you be doing more to check out investments? Or should you be learning more about becoming a better parent? Or spouse? Asking and answering those questions will probably be the biggest payoff you can get from this very helpful guide.

Be rich in knowledge and turn it into wisdom!

The all-purpose single resource and reference book
Collaboratively edited by Peter Weber and J. J. Newby, and now in a fully revised third edition, Find It Online: The Complete Guide To Online Research by journalist and online trainer Alan M. Schlein is the all-purpose single resource and reference book to looking up the latest and most useful information on anything, anywhere, using the resources of the Internet. Individual chapters address the basics of the Internet, framing one's search strategy, the best tools and search engines available, government resources, evaluating the credibility of information found on the net, and a great deal more. Find It Online is a very highly recommended addition to any personal, professional, school or community library Internet Information Resources reference collection.

An approachable guide to delicious food
Brennan's of Houston in Your Kitchen is as approachable as Chef Carl Walker himself. This cookbook guides the reader through the best Creole recipes from the restaurant in a straightforward, informative manner. Recipes are not overly simplified for the home cook, but instead are presented in an enticing and easy to follow step by step process, with lovely pictures of the final products. Each dish we have prepared tastes exactly like the food available at the restaurant. We recently visited Brennan's of Houston and were again pleased with how well the recipes translated for the home cook. What a delightful addition to any "chef's" library.

New Orleans Restaurant Cooking
This beautiful 192-page book is a triumph for Chef Carl Walker. This eclectic and inventive collection of recipes has been carefully accented with full-color photographs and personal anecdotes. It is a wonderful gift for fans of Brennan's, and even for home cooks who have never made their way to Houston.

The book is organized by course: Beginnings (Lagniappes, Drinks, and Appetizers), Garden and Beyond (Salads and Soups), Breakfast, Meats and Poulty, Seafood, Accompaniments (Sides, Sauces and Seasonings), and Fantastic Desserts.

Each recipe features an expected yield, list of ingredients, paragraph-style instructions on how to prepare the ingredients, and a Chef's Tip. The Chef's Tips include technique suggestions, ingredient substitutions, and reminders on how to prepare the raw ingredients.

The desserts section is especially decadent. For example, the Chocolate Praline Cheesecake is a masterpiece by Pastry Chef Melissa Piper Reilly. This luscious dessert uses a chocolate crumb crust filled with caramels, pecans, and chocolate-laced cheesecake filling.

This beautiful cookbook will be a delight for chefs and bakers alike. Enjoy!

THE BEST COOKBOOK EVER!
I received Brennan's of Houston In Your Kitchen as a gift from a friend, and I love it! The recipes are easy to follow, with great tips from the chef. I especially like the fact that he makes suggestions for side dishes to go with main entrees. Having eaten at Brennan's many times, I'm excited to be able to "cook like Chef Carl" in my own kitchen, and my dishes really do taste just like "the real thing." I sit down to choose a new recipe, and an hour later, I'm still enjoying the side stories, quotes, history, etc. I didn't know a cookbook could be so fun!

An invaluable, information rich, historical survey.
Carl Waldman's Atlas Of The North American Indian appears in a revised edition blending maps and illustration with a survey of the history, culture, languages and lives of American Indians groups. Most illustration is in black and white, with invaluable articles packing the presentation.

Great for classroom use - a real bargain
It's actually hard, finding good books on American Indian topics that work in the classroom (I teach at a medium-sized public university). There are plenty of out-of-date books. Lots of terrible "pc" books. But few that actually convey information in an attractive and interesting fashion. This is definitely one of the latter type. The maps are clear, the illustrations accurate, and the amount of information presented is surprising. There's a tremendous amount of material packed between the covers of the "Atlas"---and it's a good deal more than a collection of maps. This is one of those books that some students---especially those planning on becoming teachers---may actually decide to keep. My own copy is well-worn from use, and often consult it to clear up questions both large and small. The best comprehensive source I've seen for this kind of money.

More than an atlas.
Not just maps, but a concise enclopedia of the North American Indian, with brief but comprehensive coverage of history, culture, languages, lifeways, the impact of the European explorers and the subsequent deterioration of native American life.
As conflict characterized the Indian experience in historical times, wars are treated in considerable detail, with basic sympathy to the natives' position but with a welcome avoidance of stereotyping and sentimentality.
With Facts On File's usual excellent maps, bibliography, and index, and useful appendices with a chronology, historical and contemporary locations, reservations, museums, and more.
Essential for anyone interested in the Indian experience, and highly recommended for the reference shelf of the general reader.

A Great Insight Into the LAPD
I just finished this book and found it to be a quick read with plenty of information about police work not usually available to the public. Dunn not only accurately describes a police officer's rookie year but includes those "victorys" and "defeats" every cop experiences. If you're considering a career in law enforcement or just plain want to know more about those men and women who are sent out to put it on the line, this is the book to read.

BOOT: a magnificent eye-opener
Officer Dunn's tale of brutal reality on the streets of Los Angeles not only enlightened me, it also bolstered my decision to join the LAPD. This book is required reading for aspiring police officers, especially for those seeking a career with the LAPD or other big-city departments. Dunn's book is exceptionally well written. His narration contains a perfect balance between humor and seriousness as he explains the almost unexplainable actuality of routine street crime. Had I not read BOOT, my perception of police work would have remained incomplete and inaccurate. This book will undoubtably enlighten any reader! I recommend William Dunn's BOOT with the highest regard and I sincerely thank the author for assisting me with my decision to join the LAPD.

BOOT forces the reader to hang on and code 3!!!
Dunn must be applauded for his first book about our nations best police department, The LAPD. Strap on the vest, log on with control, and hang on because BOOT takes the reader to the streets Lights and Siren! The reader is taken from Dunn's rookie year through monthly progressions and we see him grow into a better officer. Dunn freely admits his Tactical errors in a humorous way. Doh!! The reader is taken on a Great Year filled with humor, pursuits, tragedy all the elements for a great tale. I only hope BOOT was not the authors only endeavor. Truly a joy to read!! I have read it and underlined it Three times already. Highly recommended to not only those in law enforcement but everyone who wants an insight into those guys going code 3. What are they doing, HOW are they doing it? What are they Feeling? Read BOOT and you are taken there. So throw down that food,"We take our back ups seriously down here..."

Customer for life
Summary:

We live in a customer economy. Customers control the way of doing business. It is necessary for the company to put customer¡¦s need at the core. This book provides many practical tactics to turn what customer needs into actions.

Structurally, this book can be divided into three aspects: customer, employees and physical environment. And in each aspect, author will introduce some interesting tactics. For customer aspect, Carl suggests that company should ask customer their preference instead of just assuming what customer like. For employees aspect, Carl realizes that ¡§if you want your employees to be polite to your customer, you have to be polite to your employees¡¨. For physical environment aspect, Carl thinks that ¡§every impression is important¡¨, therefore all physical environment even a restroom should be treated well.

Comment:

Advantages:

Although minor, still need to care

For a student, this book really gives us many practical way of doing business as well as the proper manner when dealing with customers.
One of the insight that this book bring to me is ¡§although minor, still need to care¡¨. Customer will not very appreciate if company does all thing right, since customer think it is company¡¦s responsibility to do so. Also, customer will dissatisfy if company does not do well in a minor aspect such as toilet because customer will afraid how a company treat customer good if they cannot treat toilet well. Overall speaking, this book can give reader understand this concept.

Linkage between customer, employees and physical environment

After reading the whole book, I understand more about the relationship of customer, employees and physical environment. Employees and physical environment are two vital elements which are influence customers directly. Therefore, if company want to retain and satisfy customers, it is critical for them to put effort the aspects of employees and physical environment.

Disadvantage:

Some ideas may not be applied in other industries

Since the author run the business of car dealers, the content inevitable focus on car dealer. This may reduce the attractiveness of this book since some of the tactics cannot apply to other industry.

The "Bible" of my Business
My wife gave me her copy of "Customers For Life" that she had received a corporate retreat. When I first considered opening a gentlemen's club I pulled it off the shelf hoping to find a few useful "tidbits." This book completely changed my concept of customers and business success. In 3 short months of operation I have put a substantial dent into a highly competeitive market using Mr. Sewell's approach to servicing his customers. As a condition of employment with my company, everyone from waitresses and doorman to my general managers must read this book and attend weekly meetings to discuss how to apply it's principals at my place of business. The only business book I can honestly say is worth its wait in gold.

Still packs a punch!
I recently purchased this book, after having grown up with it in the 50s and 60s. The photographs are as stunning, vibrant and moving as I recall, and I realized that I had clearer memories of this collection of pictures than those in our family photo album - which probably says a lot about my family and cameras?!

Anyway - there's something VERY 50s about these photos - the Germans look "German" - the Irish look "Irish", and so forth. This collection of photos presents a very UN-MELTED "melting pot" at the same time it reveals a universal humanity and compassion. There's palpable joy, sorrow, pain, love, beauty, ulginess and every other human emotion depicted here. It's a beautiful book you won't be sorry you got!

A brilliant presentation of the human spirit on film
This book details the Family of Man photography exhibit composed of photos that Edward Steichen collected from photographers throughout the world. From the intro by Carl Sandburg (his brother in law), to the photographs of birth, life, death and the emotions and events in between, the book shows true humanity through the eyes of the camera. Featuring works by many famous, but yet unknown photographers, this book is a true treasure. When you glance at its pages you will discover new perspectives, or maybe something inside yourself. This is not a picture book, but a photo biography of the human race. If you are tired of coffee table books that sit unopened, pick up this book a few times and share it with your friends. You will read it again and again, discovering new secrets with every turn of a page.

A great look at the human spirit
Ingrid Sischy, the editor of Interview Magazine, once taught her creative director the art of shutting up and just looking at a photo. It's a simple technique - yet it works. If you take 15 minutes to just look at a photo, eventually the photo will begin to speak to you. This lesson is even more profound when you allow the photos of "The Family of Man" to speak to you. Each photo encapsulates a tiny portion of the human experience and serves as a vivid mirror of our own spirit. As we journey from birth to death we see all the flaws and fascinating qualities that make the human being a beautiful work in progress. And while the book is only 5% words I've yet to complete it. Why? Because I've found myself watching closely each photo for the amount of time it takes to finish the chapter of a book. And each "chapter" that I've seen tells me several things: That we are all bonded by love, struggle, survival, passion, pain, fears, dreams, belief and hope.

Overall, recommanded.
This book has two parts that I am not sure go togather. In the first part (p. 1-216) the authir presents his views on politics, religion, humanity and other such topics. It was the interest in these topics that prompted me to read the book. In the second part (p. 217-377) Prof. Einstein discusses his analytical work. I must admit that not beeing a Physicist, at times I was not able to follow. For that reason I cannot comment on that part of the book. Overall, I would recommand reading this book if only for its first part.

Excellent Scientific Perspective
Ideas and Opinions expresses a wide range of Einstein's thoughts throughout his life. The subject matter includes comments on freedom, politics, pacifism, education, religion, Germany, friends, and scientific issues. Whereas Einstein had a specific goal in writing each of these addresses, speeches and articles, the editor of this collection by combining Einstein's writings in this manner paints a picture of the man and his time. The most profound impact upon the reader is not the individual message of each writing, but rather how the whole body of work illuminates the dedication and fierce determination of one scientist to make himself a "harmonious personality" (64). One of the features of this collection is that it attempts to present each article in a straightforward manner. Each article is titled by what it attempts to say, for example one article is called "My First Impressions of the U.S.A." (3). This accurately reflects what Einstein says in this article, but so much more than what this title describes is also reflected in the essay. Einstein's political attitudes are best expressed not in his many essays on politics, government and pacifism, but instead in his First Impressions of America. One of his many observations is that "nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced" (6). Understanding this aspect is of immeasurable value when encountering Einstein's essay where he prescribes a program of action against atomic weapons. The greatest fault of this compilation is that it tends to be repetitive. However, this often helps to drive home the point and complete the overall picture of this man and his time. This text should be read by all persons everywhere. No other collection could possibly contain a better view of America, international relations, scientific issues and advances, religion, and humanity. For use in Honors Science, only certain readings would enhance the goal of the course, but including them would be invaluable not only for scientific perspective, but for an enriched experience of life itself.

Bank of information, good to have.
I am pleased I bought this book, The reason I chose to write this review is that it is a good book for a broad spectrum of persons. If you have any interest in the workings of life, it is worth it to have this book in your home. I would give a specific review but others have done that. The only thing that I was surprised with is that Dr. Einstein only expresses his opinions so accurately close and congruent to scientific known facts. I thought from what I had heard he was more wandering, he does not take chances. Even though he covers religion, he still will not express an opinion of true origins, but leaves so much to what has been proven. I did like that as it causes venturous thought and that is for certain this book will cause a reader to ponder considerably. I have recently read a very good book that covers this same type of matter but a slight more adventurous. Amazon recommends we mention books that are similar, Karl Mark Maddox is an up and coming theorist and scientist has a suprising paperback titled SB 1 or God.

The Perfection of a Genre
The term Ruthian, in honor of Babe Ruth, is a metaphor frequently used in sports to describe an accomplishment that doesn't merely break a record but so far exceeds anything that occurred previously that it deserves this ultimate superlative. On the subject of learning how to drive a race car, Carl Lopez' book, "Going Faster" is Ruthian. A road-racing fan for many years, I had always wanted to take up amateur, SCCA racing but had difficulty developing a budget for it. Now that I can afford it, I wanted to find a way to make up for lost time in learning driving techniques. Although a lot of progressive, in-car experience is a necessity, Going Faster prepares you for learning by its incredible detail and brilliant illustrations, presented in down to earth fashion, used to describe virtually every aspect of the interaction of vehicle dynamics, race course variation, and proper driver reaction. If you have a library of other books on the subject, donate them to a thrift store and buy this book. Even if you never race, reading a book that covers a subject brilliantly is a pleasure.

Everything under 1 roof
I read "Going Faster" from cover to cover before participating in a 3 day Skip Barber Racing School program at Laguna Seca Raceway (Monterey, CA). This book is not only one of the most informative accounts on the techniques of both fast driving and competition racing, but is an enjoyable read as well. The content has it all, from basic car control, to much more complex technical information regarding car setup, and physics of a race car. I found this book to be both informative AND inspiring, which speaks volumes in itself. Regardless of whether you are an armchair racer, gamer, autocrosser, club racer, or pro, this book offers something for everyone. I have also read many of the other standards on auto racing (Bob Bondurant's guide to high performance racing, and Carrol Smith's "Drive to Win"), and "Going Faster" offers the best of both worlds. If I had to choose one "Bible of Racing," this would most certainly be it! Worth Every Penny!

If you can't go to school, at least buy the book!
This is a great, detailed description of how to "Go Faster!" It represents the race driving theory taught in Skip Barber's 3-day school and will be helpful to anyone involved in racing at any level. Nothing beats the School's seat time you get under the instructors' watchful eye, but if you want to understand the how and why of race driving, this book does it best. There are some great illustrations and commentary from the pros throughout. If you can only have one racing book, this sould be the one! PS - it is a great refresher and study guide for those of you who have gone to school.

Florence Harding: First Lady the Jazz Age and the Death of America's Most Scandalous President

Surprisingly good! A thoroughly fascinating, literate read.
Never would I have thought that a book about the wife of Warren Harding, a president largely dismissed as the worst in U.S. history, would be so entertaining, absorbing, and historically valuable. Not only does it provide in-depth analyses of the scandals, the controversy surrounding Warren's death, and the political climate of the times, but the book presents a strong woman clearly ahead of her time. In addition, the author provides a wealth of detail, especially relating to Harding's progressive views, that I had never seen anywhere else. I thank the author for bringing this period in our history to light and giving all history buffs new ideas to ponder. After all, we've seen countless books on Lincoln, Jefferson, and FDR, and while Harding is light years away from them, it is still refreshing to learn about the neglected figures of the past.

Superb Biography of an Underrated First Lady
Staggeringly detailed, Anthony's first-rate biography of First Lady Florence Harding shines a brilliant, sympathetic spotlight on a modern, progressive, intelligent woman whose persona and achievements have been overlooked and underappreciated for far too long. President Harding himself has been an obscure figure for too much of this century, and Anthony's book helps to make the achievements and monumental failures of his administration more accessible and understandable to the average reader. The paralells to more recent Presidents and their spouses only serve to underline just how "modern" and ground-breaking were the roles played by Harding and his wife. A host of colorful historic characters are clearly brought to life by Anthony, including some notable females such as Alice Roosevelt Longworth and Evalyn Walsh McClean, the warm-hearted dissapated owner of the fabled Hope Diamond. In all, Anthony weaves a colorful portrait of a small town girl who rose, despite incredible odds and near insurmountable trajedies, to a position of incredible power and influence. Clearly a life worth re-examining, and a beautifully written biography of interest to any reader who enjoys American History.

A scholarly book that reads like a thriller!
In this biography of Florence Harding, Carl Anthony portrays an unfogettable cast of colorful and shady individuals who continued to influence American politics long after the Hardings' brief tenure. What a treat to read a page-turner that is also impeccably researched, richly annotated, and painstakingly attributed! The characters, especially the Hardings and their intimates, are deeply drawn with both compassion and accuracy, leaving the reader to form his own judgments. The machinations of politics are described in chilling detail. Anthony takes advantage of newly available material to answer mysteries which have long shadowed the Harding legacy, in a way no previous author could have done. The book is not without its shortcomings. In some places, the verbiage is thickly entangled, with absurd grammatical errors ("Late into the warm spring night poker games, illuminated by strings of tiny white bulbs, the popular songs of Tin Pan Alley and racing pieces in the new jazz sound wafted as far out as Evalyn's new greenhouses as she cranked the Victrola.") Anthony's descriptions of Mrs. Harding's medical problems make little sense in terms of today's knowledge. Also, I feel he employs an exaggerated sense of melodrama in relating the circumstances of Harding's death. However, compared to the other Harding literature I've read, this is far away the best-researched and most objective. Overall--one of the best books I've read on politics, the Jazz Age, and the hypocrises of public life.

Best Ever
This book touched me deeply, both in my heart and in my funny bone. I can't read this book anywhere I can't laugh out loud because even after countless readings I still find it to be the funniest thing I have ever read. Then just a page or two later, I find an ache in my chest and a tear in my eye. Peg has a place in my heart for the rest of my life, and I am thrilled to tears to see that the author has written more books, especially another about the characters from Virgins. I would recommend this book to anyone ( even my husband loved it) but I rarely lend it for fear of losing my copy.

I LOVE THIS BOOK
This book has the amazing ability to make you laugh and cry all within a matter of a few pages. I felt like the author had dropped right into my high school and had written about my life. I highly recommend this....you won't regret it. When you are done reading this, read the sequal called "Girls Forever Brave and True" to find out what happens to the characters 10 years later.

This is my favorite book, and there's a reason!
It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me think. A must read for anyone Catholic, and for anyone who remembers growing up!
