A Libertarian Manifesto

Vin Suprynowicz resents bureaucratic hubris and the bullying tactics of the faceless public servants who abuse their power over the citizens who pay their wages. He is a Libertarian who, by definition, believes the least government is the best government.

This book is a collection of tales of such abuses, which Suprynowicz relates in such a way that any reader with a heart will become enraged as they read.

Carl Drega, the title case, as depicted here, was a citizen who ran up against a particularly stupid and mean city hall. Over a period of decades, he tried to prevent them from treading on his freedom and confiscating his property. Finally, he was driven to violent action which resulted in the deaths of several of his tormentors and himself. An understandable reaction, even if one cannot condone it.

On the back cover, the author explains his view succinctly:

"In a free country, individuals have almost limitless rights--to travel as they please, carry private arms, consume any plant or drug, keep what they earn, raise their kids as they see fit..all without showing any license or permit..."

Of course, as the population grows, the number of kooks grows with it, and as surely as the night follows the day, laws are enacted to restrain them...laws which inevitably restrain the freedoms of everyone, including the law-abiding and guiltless. Then, as the politicians and bureaucrats seek to curry favor with the electorate and thus ensure their continued tenure in office, they pass more laws granting health care, social security, and other socialistic schemes. But, when the government robs Peter to pay Paul, it can always count on the support of Paul, and as the numbers of Pauls increase the government becomes more and more powerful, and more and more difficult to reform and to return to its rightful, constitutional role.

So, we have arrived at where we are today--with a government that no longer adheres to its constitutional role, that is to provide a level playing field where all are equal before the law, to a socialistic society where government is looked to as the solution to all cultural ills, and gradually, step by step, freedom is lost to paternalism. Where taxation is unevenly applied, depending on one's income, and where equality of opportunity is replaced by the attempt to achieve equality of result. If you have more than me, it is your legal duty to share your wherewithal with me, despite the work it has taken you to get yours, and the laziness or stupidity that may be the cause of my poverty.

This is the society that Vin Suprynowicz depicts, with all of its injustice, favoritism, cruelty and tragedy.

Is there any chance that we will ever get back to the Bill of Rights and constitutional government? Time will tell, but the prospects look bleak. The author is probably a voice crying in the wilderness for a lost cause.

A Boston T. Party "Must Read"
Vin's daily columns are a real treat; a compilation of them from 1995-2001 is a genuine tour d'force. Sweeping, relevant, and always hard-edged, "Ballad of Carl Drega" chronicles the rise of the American Police State in terms that only government supremacists could deny.

As an author and fighter for Truth, Justice, and the American Way, it is rare that I learn something new regarding our battle--but when I do, it's often from Vin. I read this book with great profit. So will you. Buy it, for time is short...

"The Best Book I Have Ever Read in My Life. Without a Doubt"
It would be very fair to say that "The Ballard of Carl Drega" is one of the most revealing and insightful books to be published in years. Authored by Vin Suprynowicz, one of the world's most celebrated and syndicated libertarian writers of the century, this title leaves no stone unturned.

For those of you who believe that a "war on freedom" is in the works, this title will not only reaffirm your belief but will show you how it's ten times worse than you originally thought. Unlike many books which are simply based on hearsay, this title cites the cold, hard facts in excruciating detail. You can expect to see examples and be pointed to verifiable sources, not just the philosophic ramblings of the author.

This book is unrelenting attack on everything you thought you knew. From building codes to taxes, this book explores the cold, dark world that is our government.

When you have finished reading this title, your outlook on life will be changed. The title is that powerful. If you buy only one book this year, that book should be "The Ballard of Carl Drega". Eight died on that bridge in Lexington back in 1775, how many will it take this time?

Beside Ourselves: Our Hidden Personality in Everyday Life
Published in Paperback by Consulting Psychologists Press (1994)
Author: Naomi L. Quenk
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $17.49
Average review score:

An excellent (and necessary) follow up for MBTI lovers
Until I began reading Beside Ourselves, I had really only thought of the Myers-Briggs types as defined by the dominant functions. In other words: being an ENTP, I thought that my personality was dictated and defined by extraverted intuition (my dominant function). After reading Quenk's insightful work, however, I realized that my actions are equally a result of my inferior function (introverted sensing).

For me, Beside Ourselves is a guide to recognizing the importance of our "hidden personalities" and recognizing why we can act in ways that seem foreign even to ourselves when "in the grip" of our inferior functions, as Quenk puts it. This book shows that there is (obviously) value to accepting and understanding the "dark side" of our personalities, and that true equilibrium can usually be reached when we learn to deal with and even embrace the "eruptions" of our hidden inferior functions.

In my opinion, grasping the concepts found in this book will require that the reader has an understanding of personality type as defined by Jung, Keirsey, Myers-Briggs, etc. In order to understand the hidden personality, or inferior function, readers should have a strong understanding of the dominant function, which is essentially the personality we feel best describes us under "normal" circumstances. Highly recommended!

Excellent book on the nature of the inferior functions
This book explains the nature of the eight MBTI functions in their inferior roles when they're exerting an uncharacteristic influence on a person. It briefly summarizes the nature of the functions when they're in the dominant role for purposes of contrast, but that's not the focus of the book. This is to my knowledge the definitive book on the nature of the inferior functions, and together with Lenore Thomson's "Personality Type" which deals with functions in their dominant role, it covers the most important aspects of MBTI. If you're new to MBTI, I recommend reading Lenore Thomson's book before this one. They're both roughly the same quality (excellent), but knowing the nature of the inferior functions isn't as urgent as knowing the nature of the dominant functions. These two books are a must read for anyone interested in MBTI. Naomi L. Quenk (the author) is INFP. I am INTP.

Breathtaking information, deepened my understanding of MBTI.
WOW! New information! I am an avidly interested lay person who, since discovering Myers-Briggs through other popular books on the subject. has used MB informally and superficially for years in day-to-day personal and work settings. But MB had never even crossed my mind as relevant or helpful on really bad days when I or those near me were stressed to the point of being "beside themselves". But this book explains that people feeling, speaking and acting out of character during different kinds (depending on their Type, of course!) of stress can be understood and predicted just as successfully as their preferences, feelings and reactions on a normal, less stressful day can be understood and predicted. The beauty of the inferior function analysis really has to be read to be appreciated. If you are interested in Myers-Briggs, you owe it to yourself to read this book. For me, it was the eye opener of the year! (So far.) Granted, I love Myers-Briggs, but my jaw has not closed since I picked up the book. I am an ISFJ, by the way, living with an ESFP. Thank you, Naomi L. Quenk, for writing this book and thereby lifting the tent canvas up to offer us lay folk a deeper appreciation of the broad applicability and plain old day to day helpfulness of Myers-Briggs personality type theory.

Great Job Hunting
Mr. Boll originally wrote this book in 1963, and revised it in 1980. It is my favorite guide for job searching. It is better than networking, better than any colored parachute book, or any professional job placement specialist. They all cost you fortunes, and this book is less than [$$$]!! Share it with friends, but make sure you get it back!!

It worked for me and lots of my friends
A friend recommended this book when I was laid off twenty years ago. It helped me get the job I have today. In fact, there were 80 applicants and I got the job because my "inventory" was exactly what they wanted (as explained in the book). I had two copies of the book I kept circulating among my friends and it helped every one of them to some degree. A friend from college was disenchanted with her job at Arthur Anderson. She read the book, followed the advice and became the CFO of a $100M company!

Even though not marketed as such, I personally believe this book is really good for everyone, even those just entering the job market.

Excellent book for career seeker
Actually I have used this book back in 1977 after I finished my MBA and I was new to this country. It helped me to write a resume which landed me two jobs. I have used Cover letter format resume too. This is fantastic book for any one and not just for executives. After reading this book can help you in selling your accomplishments during interviews.

A great story. A great read. Funny, sad, but most of all, very real. Bravo to Mr. Back for his honesty. I could not put the book down. The author has a quite a gift for storytelling. If you liked Ironweed (Pulitzer Prize-winning novel), you will love Perambulations. This book reveals much about and offers an interesting perspective on our society as a whole and growing up in white middle-class America in particular. Especially interesting are the insights into addiction, religion, relationships, and the struggle to find one's path in life. Highly recommended.

Admiration and Respect for a Strong,Passionate,Soul.
It has been many years since I picked up a book and read it from cover to cover with such anticipation. But that is exactly what happened when I received "Perambulations". It is well written, extremely honest, courageous,as well as compassionate.Definitely a eye opener. Whether you, or someone you know suffers from an addiction,or the feeling of just not fitting into what society has labled the "NORM". I believe this book to be a great inspiration. It made me realize many things, one being we all do have obstacles to hurdle over through-out our lives. But with dedication and hard work we too have a chance. Mr. Back has taught me many things in a very short time, and I Thank him for being such a wonderful teacher and wise man. I will be waiting once more in anticipation for another well written book by C.S.Back.Hopefully a sequel to let us readers know he has found Love,Happiness, and Peace within. I Applaud Carl and I too say Bravo! I am proud to be able to call this man my friend.

Thumbs Up!
Perambulations

I told my friend Carl his book was wonderful, and he suggested I review it for the WEB; here follows.

"Mr. Back", as another review calls him, has written an account he labels fictitious. The love, the genuineness, however, is clearly real. Although he does write about sick drinking and sick relationships and ever cocaine use, no subpoenas shall follow. Carl's legally training is not wasted in that regard; the book seems carefully written to actually harm no one, certainly not in the legal world of man made justice..

Carl's voice keeps things present in a wonderful sense. For example, describing an adolescent male's world, Carl writes as an adolescent male sees. Later, he writes just as a young twenty something drunk feels remorse the morning after; I know! As the journey continues, so does the vision. His is a great present tense capture of each moment he chooses to describe.

I turned a friend on to this book. Ann is not much of a reader, and she does not really introspect much. She loved the book! God, it's so personal, she told me. Well, yes, healing is intensely personal oft times! Therefore, the three people who are in recovery with whom I spoke about the book, we each found it strengthening and affirming. Will the book also have magic for the sick and suffering? Such is my hope, clearly, in posting it to my dear college roommate who at age 50 finds himself with DUIs and liver trouble. Yes, I'm sending the book to a sick friend. Although I was unable to touch my sick friend whom I love, I hope the book will. Isn't that future looking? Apparently, a lot of people want another book by Back; add me to the list

By the way, it is very readable!

Get Out Of That "Drift!"
Carl Zaiss makes the bold statement in his new book that "there are things we can do to build a stronger relationship no matter what the other person does." In this fantastic book, the author contrasts "The Drift," his term for traditional ways of thinking and relating to other people, with "True Partnership," in which efforts are focused on enhancing the relationship itself. If things aren't going your way at work or at home because of "those other people in your life, who won't do what they should do" then take heart - this is a very encouraging book that shows you how to stop trying to change other people (and yourself) and instead focus on changing the relationships themselves. Techniques include connecting with others by realizing the interdependence of us all on each other; communicating with intent to constantly improve the quality of communications; expanding from an "either/or" mentality to a "both/and" orientation; and observing not from one's initial "gut feeling" point of view but trying out different points of view to see if a new one helps resolve an old conflict. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for those looking for a new communications, team building, or conflict management tool.

Practical and approachable
Carl's book provides practical approaches to typical relationship issues. I find his work applicable to both professional and personal relationships and his suggestions foundational and doable. He covers a broad range of ways we "drift" in relationships and how to bring ourselves into "true" partnerships. These kinds of strategies were familiar to me as someone who has read a lot on improving and sustaining relationships, but this book brings it all together. It is a clearly written, engaging invitation to take responsibility for yourself to create true partnerships.

Change, Partenrships and Transformation
Those of us in the change and transition business are vocal, loud and some would say, obnoxious advocates for recognizing the human side and impact of change. Too often our words fall on deaf ears...with "True Partnerships" we finally have a text that deals with NEW principles for relating to others during, before and after change. We finally have a text that deals with the potential destructiveness of autonomy, power, scarcity mentality and victimhood. Instead this book awakens a call to action for relationships that produce extraordinary results by shifting our philosophy to one of connection, communication, expansion and creator/observer. It is powerful, beyond words and is guaranteed to cause you to examine your own approach of "drift" versus "true partnership." It can shake you up and transform your relationships at work, at home and everywhere inbetween. Read it and begin relating differently today.

Homeschool Mom
Everything about this book is terrific. The story line captures the attention of the children as well as teach them a most important life lesson. Children can be very self-centered and this book teaches that we can find happiness when we give to others in many different ways. Life shouldn't always be about what we can get, but about what we can give.

Great book about values
What a super book to teach the values of helping, serving and respecting elders. Today, when kids seem too preoccupied with being entertained, this teaches that joy comes from helping others. I loved it!

Can You Help Me Find My Smile
Can You Help Me Find My Smile was another one of my Carl Sommer favorites. The story is about Teddy the young bear who is grumpy and no matter how hard he tries he can't seem to find his smile. The help and advise from friends, even a new bicycle on his birthday doesn't seem to make him happy for long. After searching he finally seeks the advise of his grandfather. As Teddy discovers he finds his smile again by helping others. I would definitely recommend this book for elementary school children. This is a good lesson in wisdom, kindness and giving.

The BEST Carl book of all!
This is, by far, the best Carl book (in fact, one of the best of any picture books). My just-turned-two girls have had this book for months, and it is their favorite. Not only is the artwork fantastic, but the book is actually quite clever (I love the scene with the artists painting Carl and the baby in abstract, impressionist and modern art styles). It is filled with spectacular images that grab a toddler's attention, and the detail is enough to keep adults interested, too. Even after reading the book many times, I still find things I hadn't noticed before. The book includes a carousel, flower garden, balloons, ice cream, train, petting zoo (with seals???), slide and much more ... plenty to show and teach your children! [As a side note, apart from this book and "Good Dog, Carl", the other Carl books fall short of our expectations]

The favorite book of both our toddlers!!!
We have a few "Carl" books at our house and "Carl's Afternoon in the Park" is the runaway favorite. Both our children get very excited and run to me when I pick up this book. We often find them paging through it on their own as well. They love the balloons, train, park, children's zoo animals and swing -- not to mention the great Carl! This book has been a wonderful addition to our collection.

response to "wayn3 of Warsaw NY"
"Wayn3 of Warsaw NY" needs to LIGHTEN UP and GET A LIFE re: Good Dog Carl review! If you had any slight amount of intellect and insight, you would figure out that children's books are about fantasy, imagination and FUN! It's not about social services, CPS and child abandonment! I'll bet you're a real bore about your children reading/watching Lord of The Rings and/or Harry Potter if this is the case. Good Dog Carl books are some of the best displayed relationships shared between children and their dogs and how they are loyal to one another. I happen to own a Rottweiler and he is one the most gentle dogs in the family w/ all the children and they love him. Get a grip!!

The best Turkish cook-book we've ever used
We're Turks living in the States. We have been using his recipes for over a year now. We don't feel homesick!!!!! We recommend this book whole heartedly.

Mediterranean Diet Haven!
I have this cookbook, and cook from it at least once a week. The recipes are well thought out and always tasty. Recently, I adopted a mediterranean diet, and found that I could eat foods I really liked, and still be healthy. However, lunch was always a problem. I'm lucky enough to work around the corner from the restaurant, Sultan's Kitchen, where Ozcan cooks. This is where the recipes come from. They are healthy, they are tasty and they are very well tested. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to adopt a healthy diet or looking for turkish recipes.

Eat like the Sultans!
Most Turkish cookbooks written in English are very hard to understand since translating anything from Turkish to English can be quite a task. Most of the recipes in this book are very easy to understand and follow through. There are some recipes here that may be difficult to make (Su Boregi, Manti to name a couple) but thats because they are hard to make regardless of what language you try explain the recipe! The ingredients shouldn't be too hard to find and the taste you achieve by following these recipes is 100% authentic. You dont have to be in Istanbul to eat like the sultans anymore! Excellent for those homesick!

Ultra-Violet's Pickled Egg Cookbook: Plucky Prescripts from the Show Me State

Ultra Violet was related to the Lilliputians!
Wherever do these wacky, useful cookbooks come from? Ultra-Violet is an amazing character and both the recipes and stories provide entertainment just reading them. My favorite story is The Funeral. We need more people like Ultra-Violet who delivers the truth in fast curve ball style. Forgive the cliches but they were created for her. She sounds like one mean mama and one you won't want to cross. Her antics prove her ancestors were the Lilliputians who believed trivial crimes deserved severe punishments.

Ultra-Violet solved an ongoing debate between my husband and me: how to boil and peel an egg correctly. The answer is on page 2. Now we have this entertaining cookbook for pickled eggs - never had any pickled eggs, may not ever pickle any, but getting to know Ultra-Violet is reason enough to have this book.

Peter Piper Never Picked a Peck of These Pickled Eggs!
Ultra-Violet's Pickled Egg Cookbook. Just another cookbook? Ha! At first glance this book reveals itself to be both shocking and practical. Shocking in that one does not expect to see a purple chicken in apron and high heels -- the nature of which is revealed once you get into the book -- and practical because it has stain resistant glossy covers and is spiral bound, thus allowing it to lay flat, making it ideal for the kitchen. Open the covers and you will find a cookbook like no other. The topic, pickled eggs, is perhaps a little unusual. I had no idea there were so many ways to pickle eggs. The recipes are excellent and they are guaranteed to change your taste for pickled eggs, but it is the presentation which is absolutely delightful. It makes this book worth having if you never pickle a single egg. The anecdotes, historical references and trivia, and the wonderful style in which their story is told that makes this book a winner. You won't be able to keep a smile off your face, perhaps not a tear from your eye and certainly not a giggle from invading your heart, as you read this one.

More than forty pickled egg recipes
Ultra-Violet's Pickled Egg Cookbook is a delightful, tongue-in-cheek collection of more than forty pickled egg recipes accompanied with humorous anecdotes from long-time Missouri resident and author Violet Clayton. Here is a compendium of recipes for pickled egg enthusiasts enhanced with interesting facts about eggs, suggestions for fund raising and gift giving, as well as tidbits of information about the State of Missouri. From Shoot The Moon; Blue Moon Tavern Eggs; and Eta Sprugen's Eggs; to Red Wine Vinegar Eggs; Aunt Belle's Pickled Eggs; and Dee Reeser's Gotcha Eggs, this handy, 86-page, spiral bound compendium will be an instant favorite for all pickled egg connoisseurs!

I think Grandpa's Tales was a really good book. It explained everything clear to me and it was really cool.
